Self-destruction of “In Rock” anniversary edition

When looking at my “In Rock” anniversary edition today, I noticed the same symptoms of self-destruction that appeared on some copies of “Live In Japan” years ago:

IMG_9001

Starting from the center, the disc shows several scratches that look like frost patterns while the majority of the disc seems to get covered with little dots and oily looking clouding.

The defective disc reads “EMI UDEN 8340192” and “4-1-2-NL” on the inner ring, while a copy with the text “EMI UDEN 8340192 @12” and “6-1-4-NL” on the ring doesn’t show the symptoms.

Mine is from EMI Swindon and doesn’t show any sign of this – it’s also the first pressing with the mastering flaws.

However, and apologies if I’ve remembered incorrectly, wasn’t the Live in Japan issue down to a chemical reaction from the ink used on the disks off-gassing and affecting the back of whatever disk was facing towards it? Or was that another release? I do remember having the issue and that it seemed to clean off using tape head cleaning fluid, and it’s certainly not obvious on either of the three discs now.

    – Simon Robinson should never have been involved in the anniversary-edtions. Live in Japan is the work of an amateur. There is no bass and to reverse the l/r channels denotes mild intellectual disability.

    I have that problem with my 1993 EMI Live in Japan Disc 3 – 7243 8 27726 2 0 [8277292].

Henrik H: You took the words right of my mouth,it sounds horrible!! As for selfdestruction, mine is not showing those symthoms………..Pity that these things happaens……

    Karl-Heinz says:

Mine has “EMI UDEN 8340192″ and “4-1-31-NL” and has until now NO problem.

The unedited, longer “Black Night” version is so much better than the original single. Love it.

A tiny dab of washing up liquid on a soft cloth will remove this residue. My copy of Live In Japan was unplayable but after this treatment it plays just fine.

If it wasn’t for Simon, we probably would have never gotten any of the releases!! It was his continual prodding and pushing that got the record companies to do something!! As far as the 3 disc LIJ, I love it!! Lordies keyboards are up front more!!

Certainly sounds like a Henrik Hanssen line from Holby City 🙂

Data on a cd is suppose to last 100 years…

Thwe same happened to me years ago with the two cds SCANDINAVIAN NIGHTS Connoissuer cd ediction 1984.

What a boring way of self destruction for an album like this. At the very least In Rock is supposed to explode in a giant cloud leaving nothing but rubble behind!

(of course Fireball and Burn will go out in a flame, Machine Head will melt, Stormbringer turn into a black thundercloud, wdwtwa burst like a bubble and CTTB turn into wine…)

Regarding ‘faulty’ cd’s, I have a few (non Purple) official releases from the 90’s that don’t play anymore on my Pioneer system, but thankfully, they do on my computer, so I was able to make a copies for myself! They appear to be covered in small bubbles or dots, all over the disc. I noticed this about 10 years ago, King Crimson’s 3 early 80’s albums & Tony Iommi’s Seventh Star album. They appear to have deteriorated in that first 10 years or so, from when I purchased them! Remember the marketing of disc’s back in the 80’s, a ‘lifetime’ ‘guarantee! What lifetime, a humans, the disc’s itself or maybe planet earth’s! They don’t last forever, but we would hope they would last ‘our’ lifetime! Cheers.

    @VR 11;

The Data isn’t the issue. It is the plastic/vinyl/polymer that incases the Data that is the problem. If the clarity of the casing is compromised, see ya Data……. it can’t be read.

The art work on my anniversary In Rock has chipped away but the disc (which is played frequently) still sounds great.

    Jet Auto Jerry says:

My “In Rock” seems to be just fine. I am not sure which batch it is but it has the same “EMI UDEN 8340192” on it but the other code is “4-1-19-NI” (Maybe an L, can’t tell) and inside of that is says “IFPI LO46”. Made in Holland, purchased as an import 7-22-96 for $31.99 USD retail (4 X what is cost now but well worth it).

My Live in Japan (same as Scottbuster2000’s) is perfectly fine even though the discs seem a bit thinner compared to In Rock. Listened to Disc 3 last nite and it sounded great but I guess I should compare all of the discs to the anniversary box set for sound quality for shits and giggles. And I like the guitar on the correct side since I have never been back stage.

I don’t know if local environment would have anything to do with it or not but I am in Southern California near the coast with avg temp 55-65 winter, 70-80 summer, no A/C and discs are not near any heater vents and away from direct sunlight.

    C-Ya in Costa Mesa!

@TheRedPen #6: can you please enlighten me how “a tiny dab of washing up liquid on a soft cloth” will remove the cracks in the plastic?

  22. 22
    Les Hedger says:

I agree Rock! Simon has done more to get the re-issues going than anyone else, especially the old management!!

My absolute first cd I bought is PERFECT STRANGERS,of course I’ve got it on 1984 . It remains good.

My oldest cd is Straight Between the Eyes (1982), still rocking, as all the discs in my collection (and I have many, believe me). I had problems only with second-hand discs.
