Bombastic Meatbats

Glenn Hughes’ former bandmates Chad Smith, Jeff Kollman and Ed Roth, rounded with bassist Kevin Chown, have formed a band called Bombastic Meatbats. They frequently play at The Baked Potato in Los Angeles. Glenn guested at their gig on March 29 and they went for an extended version of Mistreated:

I have heard versions of “Mistreated” in which the musicians try to turn the song into some kind of heavy metal anthem. “Mistreated” is a blues song. That feel comes through in this very good version, complete with volume swells and single coils.

The main body of the song is very nicely done. I liked the jazzy arpeggios in the vocal improv section–recall that Coverdale did a vocal solo at the end of “Mistreated” in Purple–but here, it is a Hughes interpretation of that same idea–an interesting take on a Purple classic.

Glenn Hughes–keeping that Mark III flag flying.

This band formed well over a year ago, released an album referred to as a solo project of Chad’s.
