A site called Blue News carries a feature on Splat! with quotes from Ian and Ian. It attributed to the Swiss press agency Keystone-SDA and apparently based around an interview that both gave to DPA. It is dated today, July 29, 2026, but reads like was written some time before the album release (July 3).
A spectacular start, just like over 50 years ago
On “Splat!”, the British band gets off to a flying start. The furious hard rock track “Arrogant Boy” opens the album with a bang. “There’s absolutely no warning,” says Paice with satisfaction. “Bang! It kicks off right away.” An incredible 55 years after the smash hit “Highway Star,” Deep Purple are kicking things off with similar intensity.
According to frontman Ian Gillan (80), the song is about populism. “There’s a lot of aggressive politics right now,” the singer explains. “I don’t like either left-wing or right-wing politics, because I see both as a stalemate. The pendulum constantly swings back and forth between left and right; governments come and go, but fundamentally, little changes.”
In preparation for the album, lead lyricist Gillan wrote stories last summer to serve as the basis for the lyrics. “Of course, it’s impossible to pack everything into a single song. So I could easily have written 20 different songs titled ‘Jessica’s Bra,’ each with different events and different lyrics.”

It is interesting how his lyrics haven’t changed a lot as he gets older. He is still a thinking man 😊
When he was young it was about the current political situation (Mary Long, Child in Time and a lot of others).
And he still has this sharp view on life in general.
Writing this while I listen to the news – a family is interviewed being on a vacation at Crete, and well, I leave out the details, but there are fires and the family just wanna go home… and I wonder when it happened like this: being on a vacation that turns out to be a survival strategy – do we get home alive or not!
Sorry, not meant to be grim in my view, merely realistic.
And also with a sarcastic laugh: I have to use straws of some paper, impossible to use in my Coca-Cola, while the leaders in the world fight wars that ruin so much more than my straw of plastic ever would…
I guess Ian G is political to some extent in his opinions, but I have always found him to be an observer, a spectator, but not only that, of course, he is also involved in life. He is indeed living 😍
Will we get the ‘happy-go-lucky’ songs again? “Call of the wild” – comes to mind, well the great man decides for himself 😊
I really wouldn’t mind a book from his own hand.
I love to listen to older people’s views.
When people mature they tend to forget their own private situation, and wanna teach us something about how to cope.
And oh boy how we need to figure out how to cope!
And that was why I in the beginning found Splat a bit cold. It has warmed up to me and vice versa 😊
Now I see the album as it is – a realistic view on the world and life. And life isn’t always in pinkish colours… it is also black and blue, it hurts, it makes us bleed, but at the end of it – it is worth it all 😘
