Something in the air … (crash, bang, wallop!)
    Tells me to beware …
    🤣

First things first, all credit must go to the one and only Purpledaniel who found this first and in ghastly fashion tried to sabotage the IGB topic with it by mentioning it there! 😂 The lengths these juvenile music taste Rainbownettes go to … 🙄

Speaking of: I am of course happy for you all and how you will now leave little Rainbow stains in your collective undies in genuine anticipation/passion!

I look forward to a remaster (Andy Pearce also did the Deluxe versions of Rising, On Stage, LLRnR + DTE more than a decade back) of the always dull-sounding debut especially though I would – as with Rising, for different reasons as that one doesn’t sound dull – have preferred a real remix. Alas, the original masters must have been lost when the wizard toppled off the tower of stone bloodying the sand, that stupid, non-airworthy klutz! Now where do we go indeed. Duh, you go find master tapes in a Babylonian desert!

If this is a first of a series of releases, then I am not quite sure why they did not compile the Dio-era into one set, hell, they didn’t even reflect the Bain/Carey line-up in full because then On Stage should have been included which albeit released only after Jimmy’s firing featured him and Carey playing on that initial tour. And if there will be a second set with On Stage and LLRnR, then where will DTE eventually go, stand -alone or added to DTC while SBTE and BOOS constitute the last batch? A weird separation of eras anyway you look at it.

But let’s not quibble and hope for knackige remasters for now.

PS: And deeply nuanced, elegant drumming of course. 😈

Fair price ? Half of the raities CD might be interesting (other half is rough mixes from delux Rainbow Rising DB CD). Guess getting the 3 German concerts remastered might be fun? Ps – 2nd concert omits the oncore (do you close your eyes) which was an extended work out? Not too sure how many copies of Ritchie B’s Rainbow I have on vinyl/ cd but LP in my all time top ten! Will be purchasing of course…Long Live Rock?
Ps – clever marketing ploy on the box set as they list the Cologne concert in german (Köln) and got me thinking it must be a different show….ha ha Cheers PJ

The mention of a major reissue campaign is really interesting. Although this particular set doesn’t mention whether the Rising CD will have the New York or LA mix. Good thing that they’re including the rough mix with the keyboard intro on Stargazer.

Hopefully we’ll hear soon about the rest of the planned releases.

As we speak, Amazon.de has the box at 132€, while the UK one has it at (roughly) 85€.

Uwe Hornung providing a heads up for Rainbow, I don’t believe it. Unless it is to put the boot in, again…………..Or is it because he genuinely feels ‘elated’ of sorts because finally, Ritchie could be behind some sort of re-imagining of the Dio era Rainbow. Getting a little more serious now, we wonder why LLR&R isn’t part of this set, being the third album with Ronnie and all. Don’t put that out with DTE, please. All these re releases are going to send us broke, again. Surely we should have a little stake in their castles or something by now. A slab of stone or a single link in the draw bridge chain or even a latch on the privy door. We have contributed so much to the DP members coffers over the decades and now this, along with the IGB set to send us all financially to the wall. Oh well, such is life in peasant land. Cheers.

So… nothing new except some or 4 unreleased tracks on the rarities disc? I hope for a vinyl release of the live shows in the near future. I already own the CDs for years.

    RB says:

So pleased that Ritchie has finally got on board with Rainbow reissues, although I’d rather have had Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll as part of this set, and anything from the first lineup live, even rehearsals (there must be something). I wonder at the wisdom of mono edits as it merely feels like padding. Personally I’d love a remaster and remix (Steven Wilson?) of all the studio albums, including any attendant live material, either recorded on tours but never released, and desk recordings. In addition, PLEASE remix Onstage as on Kill The King Ritchie’s solo is down in the mix.

I hope the reissues are done with love and respect rather than a cash grab.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Buttocks, which songs are missing where? You speak in riddles.

That just shows how selfless even a diagnosed solipsist like me can be! Didn’t I go out of my way to not hurt any the many resident Rainbownettes’ collective feelings here for their favorite band from their blossoming teenage days when Kleenex tissues stilled ruled supreme on their nightstands? 😇

I am generally of the opinion that all Purple Family material needs to be curated and repackaged properly – and Rainbow has sofar had a real bad deal. Considering how iconic Rainbow Rising is to many people (never mind that I think it’s overrated, that plays no role for rereleasing it in a worthy manner), that album should have seen a bells & whistles proper remix with state of the art technology long ago (and for the life of me I cannot believe that the masters to do that are really “lost”, it’s a question of hiring the right tape archeologist to got through the vaults and find them, someone has to put up real money for that).

I think the gold standard for released material within the Purple Family has so far been established by the Whitesnake boxes DC oversaw and by the Machine Head and Made in Japan remixes y Dweezil Zappa, Martin Pullan, Kevin Shirley and Steven Wilson (add the CTTB remix by Kevin Shirley to that). That In Rock (last remastered for CD 30 years ago during the dawn of that technology) has not seen such a treatment is an abysmal state of affairs.

PS: And even with missing masters, current technology would allow a remix of Dio Rainbow material, DC has amply shown that with his debut solo album.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sav5g4VkcYM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld4EM9iyDpE

PPS: For me, a worthy Rainbow Dio-era box should contain

    – remixes (and remasters) of the debut, Rising & LLRnR plus

    – all the source live material remixed that went into On Stage +

    – the Cologne, Düsseldorf and Nürnberg 1976 gigs remixed plus

    – the 1977 Munich one remixed and

    – the 1978 Omni Atlanta one remixed

    – rounded up with whatever demos, rough mixes, rehearsals + individual live tracks etc they can find plus

treatises on the cover art of the three studio albums &

a personal diaristic account by Ritchie of his Vienna prison days and the following Munich gig! (He can add a chapter about his previous US hair transplant/augmentation if he likes, the 1977 tour had him first display his new ‘widow’s peak-free’ look. 😎 )

And why not a Dolby Atmos mix of Cozy Powell’s Tchaikovsky 1812 drum solo so you can finally hear it like he heard it encircled in his Yamaha Fortress of Solitude! The full “Cozy Powell Immersion Experience” so to say. 😂 I’d be happy to shill out for that and I believe so would a sizeable amount of people here – all our faithful Rainbownettes! 😘

This new release does not share that ambition, but by the (appalling) standards of Rainbow’s past reissue programs it is a step forward. Better that than nothing.

    Allen says:

    RB-

The Shadow of the Wizard book mentions unreleased versions of Black Sheep and 16th Century in the archives.
Also a load more Pirate Studios 1976 tour rehearsal tapes exist but are unreleased. Including a jam with John Bonham on drums.

On page 188 and 189 there’s mention of live material from 1975 that was recorded, but were sold to a private collector, but thought to be copies of what Rainbows sound engineer had, and his estate owns them.

Imho, these (if they could have been found) would have made the ‘rarities’ cd a lot more interesting.

I seriously can see a super deluxe Rainbow on Stage set being released with LITB and Stargazer on at some point in the future, with an unreleased show (Munich ‘76 anyone?)

For now though, I’ll just stick to the lps and the Deutscheland Tournee 6cd box set of I got off Vinted for £17!
Whoever gets this set….enjoy and crank it up to 11!

  12. 12
    MacGregor says:

It is always a little disappointing when older recordings don’t get a remix of sorts. Especially with a muddy or too dry a mix and an unbalanced mix where an instrument or two are out of whack with other instruments. Hopefully sticking up for Jimmy Bain’s woeful bass mix on Rising will keep me in the good books with Uwe.
With that and the shock of Uwe mentioning an Atmos mix for Cozy’s drum solo. (I have just been attended to by a few paramedics who were concerned as to my shock levels being radically altered. They have assured me I am still ok, but advised me to be careful listening to too many outrageous comments from certain individuals). Of course it does depend on who remixes the albums though doesn’t it. Steven Wilson gets mentioned a lot these days, he does have a good record (pun intended) for leaving things alone on original albums. Meaning, not trying to be fancy or even worse, changing the set list around, for want of a better description. Just remix them in stereo too, forget the ‘surround sound’ hoax, it isn’t for hard rock music at all. Although a few alternative mixes for Stargazer would enable the orchestra to be heard a little better. Cheers.

    David Black says:

@11. My take on the details listed in “The shadow of the wizard” is slightly different.

The book actually lists sessions from Kingsway in 1974 & Minneapolis 7th or 8th Dec 1974 and Florida 12th Dec 1974 in unknown studios.

Kingsway may have just been a session and as Jerry Bloom says a recording is “purely speculative” The Minneapolis session was based on conversations many years after the event with Craig Gruber and only 16th C is specifically identified as being recorded. What the book doesn’t say is that any tapes actually exist or are archived.

The Pirate Sound tapes are archived and known to exist. The Tower Of Babel bootleg has been in circulations for years but since the Edsel set includes 16th C & Catch The Rainbow it must come from 29th May tape which has been circulating for a while as “1976 World Tour rehearsals” and lists the tracks in the order they are listed in the Edsel promotion including KTK listed as Getaway (Kill The King).

So all in all, if you’d bought the “Live In Germany” set in 1990, the “Deutschland Tournee 1976” box set in 2006 and “Rising DuLuxe” in 2011 (and shame on you if you didn’t!) then you’re shelling out big bucks for some mono and single edits plus 4 rehearsal tracks of moderate quality. I shall not.

    EDITED VERSION.

    EXCUSE ME.

Have been told often I m kinda weird but I d settle for the word special.

Unlike in the old days I m able to enjoy music on YT tru just 2 average, I think, pc speakers.
I also split buying all kinds of special editions, incl the ones I wanted to own.

    Money was 1 thing.

Then came the relativity of it all crashing healthwise 5,5 years ago.

I saw a crazy Americain rambling on YT about the box, just coincedence, this evening.

The man has an awful voice and doesnt seem very bright but hey…
I listened it tru and concluded it is weird compilation box, again not delivering what SHOULD be done, incl a remix of the first one.
    No tapes? AI?

I dont know, the booklet mighht ve temped me to buy things in the long gone past but priorities changed.

I hoarded myself silly in the past after getting straightened out, but slowly or fast I began again.

So right now Im 60, ill,not on drugs, just a bit of useless meds I probably never should ve restarted, but did out of despair.

I m not making noise or anything, but ……………
My************neighbours who are in a meeting with my landlord all the time nag about stupid things, that most of the time ve nothing to do with me, stench in THEIR hallways, probably leakage from above, found another thing to complain about.

So now I working despite exhaustion and deep depression my ass off, helped a bit, to empty out my house and more,

I guess you understood by now…

I m about to be evicted after 32 years of paying rent for an inferior house, 3 successive landlord didnt invest anything.

I m trying to meet demands, insane extreme regulations regarding fire safety.

Had to dispose of my 15 year old laserheater at which they looked : What is that?

It had safety, never an issue, is used everywhere, but yes, the stench from inside got me by the balls.

I could ve handled it buying a new device because the oil earlier on this year wasnt a complaint, and cleansing it inside is made difficult.

Had no working doorbell anymore, so neighbour tried that for nothing.

    Its an extremely weird story.

I m damaged but no drugs or booze, discarded wine, never smoked,am relatively quiet and have no debts.

But an overgrown garden, a collapsing fence in combination with petrolstench did it.

    So everybody happy 26.

I cant ask to pray for me because I m an agnost, unable to see unvisible deities.

Do with these post what you want.

I know I m totally out of line here now, but years of being homebound, badluck and this …

    I m going OTT.

    No not over the mountain.

    LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL?

More than a bit rambling and hardly professional, really only worth wading thru for some of the rare (to me at least) pics of the band and its members shown.

Re your personal situation, maybe a move into a new surroundings + neighborhood and deciding what to get rid of will do you some good in the long run?

    Dear Uwe

    It isnt that simple

I dont want go into details.
I already went far overboard with earlier texts considering the purpose of this website.
But while writing this I see I cant help it to go into venting again. But dont intend to repeat it all year.

I repeat my best wishes though myself feeling like Living Wreck, well not exactly like in the song but…..
Cannot associate right now with a better suite title.

There s a lot of recognition in songlyrics.

I m happy fireworks have died out, I HATE IT WITH A PASSION.

Once they used the crate on my bike as a platform so the bike went down into flames.

I m not a partypooper but this shit is insane.

Go crazy but dont destroy other peoples stuff, think a bit what you re causing to the mental health of animals and people, like me, who are enduring stress, no armour, no place to hide.

So since the bikedamage I ve to drag in the heavy thing inside into a too small hall way, spreading the crate and 2 postman bags inside.

Right now, AGAIN, in a moment where a lot is shattered around because yesterday I let people empty out my hallway chest and want to put them somewhere else.

Its money. It got too much, law of diminishing returns, but also saved my ass and now the ill cat on expensive meds and dietfood.
Most probably wont do such a thing but I am like that, feeling I own a responsibility and owe it to her, Lizzy.

There were times, more sedated, though impotent due to meds I slept like a log and my skin still could endure warmth, sun, very active,I kinda shrugged shoulders but I made the error with the meds and since I get overtriggered and hide inside.

Last summer my dissapointing GP,I switched several times, told me she couldnt do anything to fix me .
So all summer/autumn I succumbed into deep depression, more or less giving up,not knowing what was coming.

Just doing the minimum every day, catcare, me trying to take a bit of care of myself, still long hair, is easy but in the end one needs to wash it.

    FIREWORKS
Always being afraid my thin glass will crash,my cats anxious, all 4 still alive

Hearing the moronic way too loud bombings between cars that their owners appearantly leave, hoping it ll not burn down it still sets of for many hours the caralarms.

I think, if they take the chance this way, cant it get de programmed?
If they re at home it doesnt help them hearing it all day.

    Yes, I saw that YT.

I try to avoid that horrible voice but stumbled upon it.
Saw a short ad for the weirdly composed box.
I m happy regularly people see things the same way, establishing the fact I m not mad or mental but just seeing things for what they are.

I m still on my coffee after waking up in a bad way.
Hope to get into actions after that.

    It is what it is?

I dont go to shows anymore , the last Glenn show dissappointed me as well, the hoped for setlist didnt come, a real look at his body of work, new songs that dont appeal to me and again BURN, why?!

Maybe just maybe I ll go to see, also yesterday stumbled upon that, the return of Roy Khan, the man made me love KAMELOT.

Ok, for those who didnt leave the building a long time ago…

    Best wishes.

Cheers, although I dont drink anymore.
Which might be wise but it was mellowing me at times like Benzo s can.

    Rock Voorne says:

    hi KARIN

    Thx for caring.

I always wanted to be a Ian Gillan look alike when I was younger.
When I was 25 somehow I managed to come close,
But people age and combined with worries, trauna, etc one doesnt get to look better.

I recently thought of him losing a lot of his eyesight.

Its apples and oranges, most of our lives. He smoked tons of Tobacco, I never started. I drank some wine but the whole bar. no. I never was interested in soccer , they almost all did. Ian as well.

He drove A Dirty Old Roller , I only biked.

Had to laugh how RB later in life got his license and was helped by Stuart Smith. RB tried to brake by stepping his leg out of the cardoor and put his shoe into the sand.

When I learned to ride a bike IN ROCK was released and I didnt know how to get off, so improvided landing in a pile of sand, left behind by constructionworkers.

Ok, I was born 2o years later so I already expected things to be similair when I was seeing old age come.

Since me being 45 my eyes got worse and I m FAFOING around with 2nd hand spectacles which I already was ready to buy new ones in 2019.

Then I crashed, the world seemed to speed up and reverse.

Last night I thought about Ian and wondering why his eyesight cannot get fixed. Money cannot be the problem.

And all of a sudden I thought of this songs about blind men in DP songs….

Even DC has a song about the Blind man.

    Maybe there are more songs…

WABMC could easily have been a varation on the songs of DARWIN, the end is near, final curtains are closing, the will to do so much, but the engine is broken.

WABMC looks back at a short period maybe, again, referring to the troubled relation with RB?
It could also reflect on a whole life.

RV I was wondering: was In Rock your first album with Purple?

It was my first encounter with that MAGNIFICENT band and INCREDIBLE voice of Ian 😃

I can’t say I wanted to be like Ian when I was young 😄 but I wouldn’t mind to have had that mane…. 🦁

  24. 24
    Rock Voorne says:

    EDIT

    Dear Karin

I oughtta know this, but I m a bit blurred here.

Made in Japan tracks HS, CIT and SMOKE in a village disco might ve been the first encounter.

I had a cousin with similair taste but who unlike me had followed popmusic for years, whereas I couldnt muster interest for it.

She must have been ahead of me collecting DP albums.
That meant vinyl in most cases.

Somehow I got my mother that far, she loathed my change, to buy me an IN ROCK cassette.

Always being in need of space because I wanted to record stuff of radio, radio often sucked though, I managed to tape over it, something which I regretted later on.
Possibly felt having the vinyl as well made the cassette inferior.

But I do own a coffeemug with IN ROCK on it.
    I never use it.
Already regret having broken my catmug.

The IN ROCK vinyl was thick and it had a huge scar running through CIT but I wasnt able to hear damage.

Somewhere I bought 2 ALBUMS from a classmate, who distanced himself from the genre thinking it was not something in fashion, both 24 CARAT for almost nothing, but it was damaged audibly.
Bostons 2nd album, DONT LOOK BACK, I bought from him as well.

From, another classmate, dont know how I got there because he was one of the group that bullied me, sold me the third DP album which I instantly loved a lot.

Exchanged my collection of KISS posters, a pity I now think, for BURN, from a guy in town.
Inbetween a solid MIJ on vinyl came to.

So, the chronology is lost on me.

    Its almost 50 years ago.

But maybe you were close, considering that IN ROCK tape.

Once my mother managed to lay one of my albums, POWERHOUSE ,I think, on our TV set, which made it almost fluid from the heat.

I think this classmate, I was talking about wanting long hair but didnt get there untill I got to 21, said something like :
“With long hair you ll never get a girl.”

The girl who didnt mind long hairs when we met 10 years later, was a California wannabee was at that school as well.
She had memory of it saying she already liked me way back.
Whereas I had to admit not having noticed her.

Girls indeed seemed to go with the flow, what was in vogue, rare ones existed ofcourse.

But I was never to find out way back, my parents resented it, my dad treatening me to cut it while I was sleeping, if I didnt go the barber.

These barbers often made me look worse.

Once one of them ridiculed Thijs van Leer of whom I was talking.
The older barber thought it was kitsch et all that.
Even worsen than his opinion was his haircut and me not knowing Thijs was a member of FOCUS.

And still early 80,s, so about 5 years later, I met Thijs at a church where he was doing a job solo.
I recognised him but still didnt know anything from his rock music, still feels stupid.

Reluctantly my mother went on to buy LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL for me.

Inbetween I bought albums at lower price, the covers, someone had cut out a piece of it, was told it was an Americain thing.
KISS ALIVE 2 looked greatfrom that purchase but sounded damaged.

What I also felt was blasphemy was recordstores glueing a sticker on the back telling me it was from them I bought.

We lost a lot magic when CDs arrived.

There s also a lot of magic around us we hardly see. Things we take for granted, for instance my cats who are getting old and I m often screaming at one of them to leave me be the moment I havent had my coffee yet.

    @24

It’s always so nice to listen to people telling how Purple have influenced their lives 😊

So you weren’t allowed to have long hair 😅

I have almost always had long hair, but I’m a female of some sort so I guess our parent’s generation was a bit easier re long hair and girls!
However my mum wanted me to have short hair when I entered my 20s. Happily I told her to mind her own business 😃 there are some power in long hair, isn’t there?

I mean, look at Ian’s mane when he was younger.
Had he been bald (and I do find baldness in some men really attractive!) I guess screaming like a banshee throughout Child in Time wouldn’t have had the same punch…

Or when he sang, with his mouth full of hair (still have to figure that one out 😁 because whenever I’m out in windy weather, I am not happy with my hair in my face or even worse: in my mouth) he looked amazing, so – ok this I might regret saying (at least if Uwe reads this) – much like a male amazone 😄

    Ahh yes, the cassette tapes!
My first cassette was On the Third Day with ELO. Not a bad album at all. It was before Jeff Lynne started to overproduce everything.

Listen to this one, I really hold it dear:
    https://youtu.be/_F3LPe1s6bE?si=wqgDAzs0xdfq2dtR
Maybe a bit on the dark side, but it has some sweet elements, and his voice was adorable.
And some of the lyrics are later found in ‘Knocking at your backdoor’, but maybe not as risqué as the Purple tune is ☺️

    This one is very energetic:

But cassette tapes were easily worn out.
I had a boyfriend who rewound the cassette tape by hand! 😁 so funny because it got ruined as fast as my tapes I rewound the usual way on the cassette player!

I hear you, and with you so many other people: CD’s ruined it all.
I just dont mind them, to be completely honest.
But of course I can hear the difference, I just really don’t miss the cracks in the lp’s (and yes, I have lp’s, sadly nothing to play them on yet) the dust I had to remove all the time, and the fact that I had to awaken my lazy body to get up and change the lp every twenty-something minutes 😆

Today I listen more and more to Apple Music, and YouTube.
Can I tell the difference from that to CD’s? No! Not at all.

So happy there were some people who figured out how to make instruments and play them, make notes and teach other people that!
So very happy great singers were around.

And so thankful we not only have Bach and Mozart to listen to! 😂 really happy rock appeared.

So very much happy Purple happened 😊

They are the soundtrack to my life…
