Track that would propel them to stardom

hush_tetragrammaton_single_artwork

Louder Sound profiles Purple’s original take on Hush for their The story behind the song series, with the input from Roger Glover, of all people. The story is reprinted from the Classic Rock magazine issue #297.

Recorded at London’s Pye studio in the spring of 1968, during sessions for their debut album Shades Of Deep Purple, Hush very nearly didn’t happen at all.

The song had been earmarked for the final track-list, but nobody had thought to bring along a copy of Royal’s recording as a guide.

It was left to Simper to hastily phone his friend Rod Freeman, who’d recently been singing Hush with a band. Freeman fetched up with his guitar and dutifully wrote down the chords and lyrics.

Thanks Nick for the very interesting article!

Hush is a beautiful song, but this:
    https://youtu.be/u1kZ9zYr7kk?si=jaqURTpuDPoEnr3X

Is so much better than the original.
First and foremost Ian’s voice is way better than RE’s voice.

Rod had a lovely voice, however compared to Ian G it was too weak, especially for this song.
When Purple Mark l made the cover of ‘Help’, Rod’s voice was so sad and longing, actually better suited than the original group’s attempt 😊

    https://youtu.be/qsBYen4qXQo?si=nqDqap3nw9UkTThG
    See Rod was perfect here,

    Whereas the originals:
    https://youtu.be/2Q_ZzBGPdqE?si=TCz3VdDTRVlmUnVg

Much more fun really, but the insanity is just beneath the surface!
You can choose to listen to the Beatles and smile and giggle, or being rather worried for their mental health.
Rod and co made it much more serious, without being close to a break down!
(Yes, I know Beatles were hunted by screaming fans, and of course the song was their cry for help!)

However Hush, with Ian as the vocalist is so good, full of life and glint in the eyes 😃

I remember listening to Book of Talyesin and April quite often in the early and mid eighties, loved the mellower quality….Ian G is DPs voice, no question but the musicmanship of MK I shouldn’ t be downgraded

    Karin Verndal says:

    @2

    Pacuha – that’s ok, I didn’t expect everybody agreeing in this 😄

But please tell me what you think then? 😊

Is it the ‘near-insanity’ in Beatles you don’t agree with?
Because until recently I thought the Beatles’ version was the very best and very humerus.
But then I noticed the eyes of Ringo 🥺😓 he looked all teared up, and if you take a closer look at John og Paul, they look like they wanna say ‘f*ck them all’, and I really don’t blame them. It must have been living hell on this beautiful earth every day. George looks like he is not completely sure of what he is doing there… a bit baffled!

Or is it my opinion of the voice of Rod?
Because I was dead against his voice in this rather soulful song. But now, have matured a bit (😁) (sorry, no pun intended) I can hear the longing and melancholic in his voice.
The band, Purple that is, is so wrong for this song, or oh please, no, Mark l of Purple is very suited for ‘Help’, but the Purple I know and love dearly, is not right for this song.
But it wasn’t Mark ll and the consecutive Marks we listen to here, it is indeed Mark l, and Rod’s voice is so sweet and, not cute but gentle! Yes, that was the word I was looking for: gentle!
Not that Ian’s voice isn’t gentle, it certainly can be in certain songs, maybe you agree in this:

    https://youtu.be/oGqCCnFxQLU?si=1lSKoCrzXIpzOqdo

But even here, in this lovely song, there is the deep lion’s roar underneath the sensual longing for this girl!
You’re not in doubt when Ian is singing that he is the main character. (And by this I’m not diminishing the rest of Purple, certainly not! They are phenomenal and outstanding each and everyone of them!)

Or is it Ian’s version of ‘Hush’ you don’t agree with? 😱
Because then I urge you to listen to it again and again! His voice is completely magnificent!
Cheeky, and if I may compare it to my favourite beverage: coffee, it’s like coffee with a very good whiskey on the side!

    Just like this song:

    https://youtu.be/LqXTAXLrb7Q?si=VlLRBoqMBkJ0GS0j

No Rod Evans on this earth could have sung this song like Ian did!

On the other hand, could Ian have done ‘Help’ like Rod? I am not so sure actually….

I look forward to read your answer 😊

    @3

    Erik!
“Ian G is DPs voice, no question”
    – you are so right!

“but the musicmanship of MK I shouldn’ t be downgraded”
    – if I did that, I’m really sorry, because that wasn’t my intention at all.

Mark l had Ritchie! Jon Lord! Ian Paice! (Sorry I don’t know enough about Nick S to say anything sensible about him, but I guess he was a very good bassist.) and Rod was certainly a very good singer.

But! When I compare Mark l to Mark ll, there is no comparison really.
Mark l was (compared to the period when RG and IG entered) a band that were more suited to play at hoedowns.
And I am really not meaning this in a negative manner. But I just mean it compared to Mark ll.
Had Mark ll never happened, I would have enjoyed Mark l.

    But Mark ll did happen!
Ian Gillan did sing like no one else on the planet earth.

As we always agree on in here: taste is subjective!

I am completely fine if everybody doesn’t agree with me, because I know what I love to listen to, and I just hope that you listen to what ever you prefer 😃

    Uwe Hornung says:

Asking Karin (who says she places loyalty above objectivity) whether other singers might have done at least once in a while something even remotely better than her St. Ian is like asking His Holiness the Pope whether one’s own intended conversion to Satanism is a good idea: The answer will inevitably be somewhat tainted and dare I say even partisan. 😎

I don‘t like Hush as a song that much, the chorus and the nananas are banal, the verses unadventurous, it‘s essentially an RnB song which Billy Joe Royale sang with a country twang:

    https://youtu.be/iz4Kneqsk70

And with all due respect, Purple did not change it around too much, the rhythmic component was already there, of course John‘s lengthy psychedelic organ solo gave it something new.

But likening it to Vanilla Fudge‘s groundbreaking rearrangement

    https://youtu.be/3dJO47d26kc

    of this here

    https://youtu.be/IjXiRN4I434

is a stretch. Lasst uns die Kirche im Dorf behalten.

Rod Evans didn‘t have a weak voice, his baritone was stronger than Ian Gillan‘s (which in 1969 was pretty much non-existent, he has admitted himself that it only developed as he got older). Rod got the job with DP by stunning them with an impromptu a cappella version in the rehearsal room of this song here:

    https://youtu.be/m7xTvb-FAhQ

And that kinda sums Rod‘s predicament up: He was more of a musical and theater crooner than a rock singer, his baritone voice was a lot more limited than Ian‘s in the upper registers, he had no real soprano or falsetto range to speak of, yet both vocal abilities played an increasingly important role as DP’s music morphed from orchestral psychedelia arrangements to the riffy “Gorgan”-sound. For that type of music it became in the late 60s/arriving 70s de rigueur to place a soprano/passaggio/falsetto voice on top of the music as the more attention grabbing and fashionable musical element. Or as Jon and Little Ian put it: “Rod had issues pitching during the louder parts” which would have required a change in register for the voice to really still stand out.

    If you listen to this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eeEFJ5EPy8

    and this

    https://youtu.be/YZWfh4pzt_s

(both btw ballads and recorded around the same time) you know everything there is to know about these two voices: Rod couldn’t have sung WABMC, but neither could have Ian given the similarly beautiful Starglow Energy the tender and more subdued presence of Rod.

Did Ian sing Hush better than Rod? I’m not sure, Ian did a good job, but I think Rod’s deeper and some might say more cabaret voice slotted right in with the song’s 60s style.

I do stand by my (never tested!) pet theory that David & Glenn with their RnB leanings could have done a stunning version of it, it baffles me why they never attempted it, even as just an interpolation which Mk III frequently did live. If they had graced that silly nananana with their twin vocal harmonies, Glenn would have funked up the bass and they would have traded verses, that song would have been one cooking encore for Mk III, I have a hunch David & Glenn would even have enjoyed doing it (certainly
more than Highway Star!). As usual, no one asked for my crucial input at the time!

Humble Roger is btw on record for saying that he could never really match Nick’s buoyant “pick-played-Fender-Precision-with-flat-wound-strings”-bass sound that dominates Hush so much “and believe me I’ve tried!”.

    MacGregor says:

Rod Evan’s voice is wonderful and isn’t it grand to not have to listen to screaming vocal at any time. It is what it is, history never repeats and MKI were a very good way to commence a rock ‘n roll journey. Nice and melodic and a little virtuoso musicianship thrown in, what a rather good way to start out. Cheers.

    @6

“who says she places loyalty above objectivity”
    – WHEN have I ever said that! 😄

Uwe, it’s really not that difficult to be objective and loyal at the same time 😃

“whether other singers might have done at least once in a while something even remotely better than her St. Ian”
    – 🤣🤣 you are sooo wrong! Has the Taylor-girl album finally hit and damaged your otherwise very nice brain 😃😄
The second last line in @4 answers your spiteful allegations!😄

I have never said Ian can sing anything! Never!
But I do believe that when he chooses to sing certain songs, where he knows beforehand that they suit his voice, then he does it perfectly!

“is like asking His Holiness the Pope whether one’s own intended conversion to Satanism is a good idea”
    – 😂 well, have you ever asked your spiritual leader that question?
I don’t think you would feel at ease being a devil worshipper! (Ohh this reminds me of a joke: a married couple is arguing and almost fighting. The woman says: being married to you is just like being married to Satan, and the man answers: I don’t think marriage between siblings are acceptable even in those circles! 😄)

“I don‘t like Hush as a song that much”
    – well, I love it, when Ian is singing it! There is so much spontaneity and smiles in it, and I’m at once in a better mood, should I for once wake up being in a bad mood!
His voice is perfect for that song.

But why Uwe do you link to the Supremes? Diana Ross is a peach, no doubt about it, but what has that song to do with Hush!

“Did Ian sing Hush better than Rod?”
    – well he did! In my head (oh I would like for you to experience what I’m experiencing every time I hear very lovely music and voices) there is no discussion, Ian is a way better singer than Rod re Hush.
Not when it comes to ‘Help’ though, because Rod seems so fragile while singing that, and I really like his soft touch.
And no, I don’t think Ian could ever sounds fragile. The lion in him will take over, and completely ruin such a sad song as ‘Help’ is. Which is also why I found Beatles ruined it!
OTOH: Ian singing ‘When a blind man cries’ is blowing me away every single time I hear it, but he doesn’t sound fragile at all, way more masculine though, so he can of course sing sad songs! ‘Haunted’ is another song where he nails it perfectly! Sad song somehow but still so powerful…

    To summarise:
    – Ian sings ‘Hush’ perfectly!
    – Rod sings ‘Help’ perfectly!
    – Ian is the number 1 vocalist for Purple!
    – and now I’m busy and don’t have more time, so have a good day everybody 👋🏼👋🏼

And while talking about voices, I was thinking about this guy:

    https://youtu.be/UJUEV46n6yY?si=zV3yaBHolXUs9YJM

Could Ian sing this? So beautifully? I doubt it actually!

And furthermore I can inform you that your hero, the bt above all bts has acknowledged RO to have the most beautiful voice.
And his voice is indeed wonderful.

But! Could Roy O sing rock like Ian could and can?
    I really don’t think so.

Do I prefer Ian over Roy?
Yes, for most songs I do, and that goes the other way around too for some songs.

Debating which voice is more precious is just like debating if coffee is better than tea (and coffee is WAY better than tea 😃 but that’s my opinion, I guess hundreds of people will disagree!)

Roy O also sand this beauty:
    https://youtu.be/Fb6luT4NNJU?si=Oqgh3-MCwX0o-b-G
Written and produced by Jeff Lynne btw 😊

    And this of course:
    https://youtu.be/4TPIjzEmyt0?si=yN11fbxmj8OAeM4c
Which I don’t particularly like, but that’s another story, no doubt that his voice is beautiful!

    And of course this:
    https://youtu.be/D3a8Seh3Cp4?si=OkDtkrjFm7USgBsb
Makes me go crazy dancing 😄 (when I’m sure no one is looking!)

And this was just to show you that of course I acknowledge other lovely voices than Ian’s! Of course I do…
But when it comes to Purple and rock in general no professional singer sings better than Ian Gillan!
    😃

    Uwe Hornung says:

I tire of Roy Orbison’s voice with its constant Jennifer Rush-type vibrato

    https://youtu.be/b_zHQ6kFuQ0

quickly, like after two songs. Not that Heidi (Jennifer’s real first name) and him couldn’t sing, but their vi-i-i-i-i-i-i-bra-to-o-o-o-o-o-o could be a bit bothersome – like an electric dildo running and humming constantly by accident in a woman’s purse (to paint a more vivid picture).

I only received Taylor’s new album today, it hasn’t had the chance to corrupt me yet!

PS: Rod’s voice, tuneful and male-baritonish as it was, was not a 70s voice, DP would have found it hard going commercially had he stayed on. In a way, his voice would have been better suited to some Prog outfit like Caravan and it’s hardly a coincidence that Captain Beyond, where his vocals worked fine, were essentially a US Prog band.

I bet the vibrator isn’t as melodic though. But then again, the ensuring result could have it conjuring up a tune or two. The dark recesses of Uwe’s mind, just where does he find these sorts of things? Cheers.

I happen to like Roy Orbison. He’s like the spokesperson for all those unfortunate souls who are unlucky in love. Where would all those people that be without him to remind them that he’s even more miserable than they are.

I thought Rod had a great voice but that it was better suited for Ballads or Pop songs, not Hard Rock. It was those first 3 albums that got me hooked on DP. They have all stood the test of time well! The Third album, along with Fireball, are my favorite DP Studio Albums. The Live in Inglewood 1968 CD shows that the power of the band was there from the beginning.

Well, never mind, women’s little helpers or not, sad heartbreaking songs or not, EP’s praise or not:
Roy Orbison was a very nice singer!

But funny it is, I could not stand him when I was younger and he was alive!
His voice was too sugary for me.
But today: he had such a cute sweetness and dimples to show for it!

“I only received Taylor’s new album today, it hasn’t had the chance to corrupt me yet!”

Roy Orbison, one very fine vocalist who I often forget when mentioning the male vocalists from that golden era. A good songwriter too. Thanks Russ for the reminder. I own that Black and White Night concert dvd, haven’t played it in many years. I noticed a recent comment at YouTube from Karin on the Pretty Woman song. Some good guitar duelling on that song from James Burton and Bruce Springsteen, have to love that Telecaster twang eh. I delved into quite a few classics there after your link to it. What a stellar cast of support musicians. James Burton on guitar, Ronnie Tutt on drums, Jerry Scheff on bass, Elvis’s backing band TCB. Plus all the other very well known popular musicians and the string section musicians too. A wonderful concert. The Big O suffered some unbearable tragedies in losing his wife and then two of his sons in the 1960’s. His vibrato or trembling vocal was a voice inflection that he had a lot of trouble in controlling it. He did well to keep it to minimum at times. Changing topic now to Uwe’s favourite vibration inflection. That short ‘vibrator’ song from 1979, that was amusing indeed. Cheers.

And a bit of trivia for Karin in case she bothers to read this: Roy’s core backing band was an outfit called the TCB Band. They were the backing band for “he who shall not be named” from 1969 until his passing.

Roy Orbison was a true artiste. Who knew his own voice well enough to schedule recording sessions for mornings whenever possible, when he was best able to control his vibrato. Aware that later in the day it could be a tiger that was difficult to tame.

One of those artistes, like Sarah Vaughan, whose vibrato always sounded musical.

Phoebe Snow was perhaps the singer who got away with the greatest quantities of vibrato without sounding unpleasantly pitchy.

Unlike Johnny Mathis, whose vibrato struck many – including Sinatra – as being a little TOO wide at times.

Elvis was unique in that his vibrato ranged almost exclusively between the desired pitch and below, rarely going above. Resulting in an incredibly beautiful sound. No wonder Gillan acknowledged E. as “The greatest singer that ever lived.”

    Skippy O'Nasica says:

@21- Uwe – yes, “It’s a crime that no comprehensive compilation of The Maze singles and EPs exists”.

Supposedly the DPAS was working on one, but it never came to fruition, possibly because they were trying to track down a pre-MI5 single on which they suspected Paice may have appeared. (By “The Shindigs” – whose record turned out to be that of another group with the same name.) The idea was also later pitched to Cherry Red, who have done a number of Purple-related releases, but nothing has eventuated so far.

The songs “Aria Del Sud” and “Non Fatemi Odiare” represent only two of the six songs The Maze played every night while appearing in that play in Italy. Wonder if the band recorded the other four as well… If so, and they could be located, that would make for a truly comprehensive compilation.

Also agree that “Hard To Be Without You” is a great match for Rod’s voice. Great as he sounded with DP and Captain Beyond, based on this single he could also have had a career singing more bubblegum pop / easy listening music. The record would make a great coda to a MI5 / Maze anthology, if such ever appears.

Wonder what happened to the masters for that single. And whether more songs were recorded during those 1970 sessions. Too bad the record’s producer Bobby Paris has passed away – the answers to those questions have likely gone with him.

@ 37 – oh, I forgot about that image of you when you had long hair. I went to use my google account to log in as requested and when I did, it said that that information would be passed onto Photobucket or whatever it was called. I declined that ‘invitation’ and got the hell out of there. I understand the privacy and security anyone has with their personal history etc. It isn’t that important to get into some sort of security issue. We believe you Uwe, the long hair scenario and the mullet too. We all, or most of us had wilder hair when we were younger. I am still wondering where mine all went to over the years…………maybe it was stress or something, it just slowly went away. Probably being in relationships with women to tell you the truth, he he he………….I have to blame someone don’t I? I want my wild hair back………..The devil, he taketh it away from me. Cheers.

I did read it, and I tried to read the link too, but it was blocked!

At least when I link to something I make sure everyone can read it if they want to! 😇

But honestly Uwe, I read everything, sometimes late at night, if I hadn’t been able to find time for it during my busy day, so don’t come here and accuse me for being insincere 😄😄

    Rock Voorne says:

” Having dropped it from their tour set-list for a time, Hush was eventually revived at the insistence of guitarist Steve Morse shortly after taking over as Blackmore’s permanent replacement in 1994.

It’s been part of their encore ever since, often taking on different shapes.”

I loathed HUSH, the studio take of 88 as much as I loathed the remake of Bloodsucker on Abandon.
My benchmark always was the Powerhouse version.
Another frustration always has been WTF did they did not film the band doing CIT,HUSH, WRING THAT NECK?!

They didnt do it in 87 but the limited 88 tour, which I managed to miss out on, had it I think.

With JLT it was done, but not the total song.I think.

I hate it when they only play little parts of a song.
Not to forget the scaling down of the monumental live versions of Space Trucking to something as short as the studio take.

I m not sure if I d have been able to endure it with Morse on board.

Hush definitely was done properly during the TBRO tour.
Forgot if they did it with Satriani.

Maybe not. Then the quote could be right.

@ 45- ha ha ha ha, talk about debonair. Now we know why Uwe has a penchant for Tommy Bolin and others who like a bit of flamboyance and colour, he he he. The image reminds me of when Glenn Hughes when he met Bolin. ‘I don’t care about the music, you coming home with me’ or words to that effect. By the way Uwe, what is that Rainbow doing in the background? Thanks for that, a classic photo that one. Cheers.
