Chosen

Glenn Hughes’ new album Chosen is set for release on September 5, 2025, via Frontiers Records.

Songwriting is deeply personal to me, and I generally write and record when I have something to say. It’s been nine years since I recorded my last solo album, “Resonate”.

While there have been recordings and collaborations with other artists, since 2016, when writing “CHOSEN”, I went back to my life drawing board, writing about the human condition, love, hope, faith and acceptance. I write about how I feel on the inside and not externally. My life is lived from within, in the present moment. It’s an album of soul food, and I’ve never been so grateful, right here, on planet earth. Music is the healer!

A video single for the title track has been released today to accompany the announcement:

Coverdale is sure gonna ask for royalties with that album cover, it looks like Northwinds rejuvenated! 😂

Naturally I like the song, but then I’m the Hughes floozy here.

The intro is loaned from Coldplay and their love for dramatic triplets since ‘Clocks’,

https://youtu.be/d020hcWA_Wg (That triplet playing has been done to death since then by any landfill indie and alt rock band.)

the verse sees Ash play a reggae one-drop-rhythm, snare beat on the three, + the chorus is U2esque, Big Countrysh, Alarmish, Simple Minded …, you know what I mean. Catchy. Nice guitar sølø frøm Søren tøø – was that enough slashed o’s to get the pøint acrøss? 😂

But even I have to admit:

    – This could be from a Dead Daisies, Black Country Communion or a GlennHughes album, it’s all interchangeable.

    – Glenn has of late devised a songwriting recipe for himself and it goes like this: Make the verse a little grungy and sparse with an ostinato bass – with that abrasively wiry Orange Amp overdriven sound he’s grown so fond of – and Glenn singing over it in a lower voice than he used too, don’t forget to make it half-beat too, and then wait for the anthemic chorus in standard time. It works though.

Hearing ‘Chosen’ now for the fifth time or so, it grows on me! Even though it’s not funky – I like Glenn funky, but a lot of his rockier inclined fans don’t.

I wanted to get this off my chest for a long time, but even for LA standards Glenn’s gnashers are definitely too alpine white, whenever he opens his mouth on that vid you have the feeling of a flashlight pointed at you! 🤣

He should sue that dentist or – Karin to the rescue! – drink more coffee (but it probably doesn’t stick to whatever material they are made of).

in the last 10-15 years he has done many things but I don’t remember anything sensational…

    Peter J says:

I agree with AndreA : always the same songs (Uwe analyse is perfect), nothing very good and of course nothing bad) for a looong time…

I don’t blame Glenn, juste like most of DP members, he needs a good partner (like Moore, Iommi, Thrall) but he thinks he doesnt and that he can write like Stevie Wonder so it’s not going to happen.

I guess after all this time, it’s quite normal not to have inspirational gas in the tank.

Glenn interviewed at Sweden Rock yesterday. Starts at the 15 minute mark:

“Karin to the rescue! – drink more coffee”

Sorry Uwe, I will not waste my coffee on a project like that 😄

I think this is a very catchy track. I like the bass line in the verses as it reminds me of Hughes/Thrall somehow. Also, the dynamic created by the laid back vocals in the verses in combination with the uptempo and hum friendly chorus. Glenn sings this song like only he can. No oversinging, no screaming, just plenty of emotion and feeling. Hope he can keep delivering at this level for a few more years. When seeing BCC the other night, it was evident he is no longer able to hold notes for as long as he used to do. But he manages to find a way around it, slightly changing the melodies and delivery. He is 72 after all. None of this is noticeable in the studio yet.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Daniel, can you be just a little more unspecific how the BCC gig was?

My oh my, that cute Swedish lass from Sweden Rock was under remote control from her endorphins when she interviewed Glenn!

Did I mention that I have friends in high-singing places who adore Glenn and his new single?

    Nuff said.

@1…I agree Uwe, very North Winds vide on that cover.🤔

#7 sounded a little harsher than intended. When I saw them again in Berlin the other night, Mistreated was the best number of the night, with Glenn sounding the most in control. Plenty of goosebump moments from him in this clip, so he can still pull it off, no doubt. Also, good improvisation on the whole in true DP spirit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAltYmgTgbY

Saw Glenn sporting his (frankly: terrible!) Dusty Springfield coiffured & augmented hairdo in Cologne, Tanzbrunnen, yesterday – a few observations if I may (unpaid by the record company I hasten to add!):

    – By far the largest crowd I’ve ever seen at a Hughes gig in Germany since the demise of Mk III. Couple of thousand people, some even knew the lyrics to BCC songs (I don’t). Of course, to Joe that is just a medium-sized gig, but Glenn was obviously pleased at the large turnout.

    – Sometimes I don’t (!) feel like screaming: Glenn was restrained (his detractors would have been appeased), but sang well and with great authority.

    – I have to rub my eyes at this, but – I checked – the last time I saw BCC was 2011 (!) in Stuttgart. Since then they have really gelled as a unit, musically and how they present themselves. Glenn isn’t as hyperactive anymore (still moves plenty), Bonamassa more outgoing, Derek gets more solos and – I am writing this about a member of the Bonham Family, listen up everyone! – Jason’s drumming was impressive.

    – Band was shit-tight and improvisation-happy. I don’t worship at Joe’s altar, but I have to say this: When he plays fast he is closer to Tommy Bolin’s wild abandon frenzy than Ritchie’s calculated drama. I recognized a couple of times Tommy Bolin-type lead lines yesterday, Joe’s love for the man certainly seems to transcend just owning a Les Paul of him as memorabilia. Bonamassa was impressive throughout as a soloist yesterday, not just widdly-widdly, he soloed a lot without ever being boring, great guitar sounds too (the whole band sounded great over the PA, loud and clear).

    – The instrumental dueling, in Purple traditionally between keyboards and guitar, is in BCC – similar to Mk IV – between Glenn and Joe and it really echoes what Tommy and Glenn used to do, i.e. in Getting Tighter. Just lovely.

    – Lotsa wimmin, no, not swimmin’, wihimmin in the audience!
