Norwegian soup
The Norway Rock magazine publishes interviews with Roger Glover and Don Airey. They were taken around the time Splat! was released, and being posted now online on the occasion of band finally reaching the country in a Splat! tour proper.
Roger Glover speaks (mostly) about the new album:
– Who is the “Arrogant Boy?”
– Good question. Ian Gillan only knows the answer to that.
– What’s the concept behind “Splat!”? Is that also something for Ian?
– Well, it started maybe as a bit of a joke after an album called “Whoosh!”. I must admit I didn’t like it as a title for the album. But, you know, we’re five people and we have different thoughts and stuff. Both musically and idea-wise and everything-wise, it’s a compromise. We don’t always agree, but we end up having to agree because otherwise we wouldn’t exist. So you learn to love things you hate. But Ian Gillan was very, very firm and very confident about “Splat!”. I couldn’t think of anything else. You can come up with “The Metamorphosis of Venus” or something like that.
– [Laughs] That’s very progressive!
– That came off the top of my head, by the way. But it’s all a bit sort of arty somehow.
While Don Airey has some anecdotes to tell:
– Hi Don! Congratulations on the new album.
– Thank you! You don’t sound very Norwegian.
– No, I come from the same place as Simon McBride.
– You sound just like him.
– I actually played in the same concert as him, back in 1995. A 16-year-old Simon McBride. I played flute, and he played an Eastern Rock piece on guitar.
– I met him when he was 16! I was working for some keyboard company just doing the demo, but he went on before me and he had a great big shock of curly hair. He played what he had to play and I just sat there going, “God, how am I going to follow that?!” I’m still thinking that now.
