AntiMusic reviews the band’s latest studio offering Splat!:
Don’t spend too much time being concerned with where the title of Deep Purple’s latest album comes from. Just know that the long-running classic rockers have another winner on their hands with Splat!, a set of melodic hard rock that on occasion harkens back to their early days. In fact singer Ian Gillan has said about the record, “I have to say, now we are very much back in with material that is compatible with “Highway Star,” “Smoke on the Water” and “Lazy,” the dynamics the balance and the fun of the music we made from ’69 to ’73. Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a “now” version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies.” And that notion is hard to argue with.

September 7th, 2026 at 08:18Over two months since Splat! Was released. I keep waiting for the day I tire of it. Whoosh didn’t really stick for me. = 1 was better but still a bit uneven.
So I had moderate expectations for Splat!
Man it still blows my mind how good that album is…
There really isn’t a bad track (Third Call is a bit cringey but still has some great moments.
But the highlights are all timers
Arrogant Boy packs more amazing moments into 3:18 then any song I’ve ever heard.
The Rider has a hook that is irresistible and crazy good lyrics
The Lunatic channels 70s Purple brilliantly
Guilt Trippin’ is an amazing track. Just brilliant. I can’t enough of it…
Splat! Has the coolest funkiest bass line this side of Mark 3.
And there is a lot of goodness I’m leaving out.
I just can’t believe these old geezers put together an album this incredible. It’s just remarkable…

R2. The band is full of veterans & very experienced masters, this means wisdom, & why the music is so good. I think they realized this about themselves during the short Mk-VI stint with Joe Satriani, as the music they’ve delivered since that time, has been very different from anything previous. New & fresh, whilst retaining some of the old menace to keep the ship on-coarse.

If you were genuine in your distaste for that, you wouldn’t attend any concerts, let alone purchase any of the music. BN do thank you for helping them to get where they are. September 16th, 2026 at 00:05Ritchie is very conservative musically, sometimes painfully so. He’s also conservative re all other aspects of life, so I guess he’s consistent.
If he had stepped out into other genres more and opened up to the occasional experimental project, I think his legacy – outside the flock of devoted here – would be differently perceived. He certainly had the ability to be a more wider-ranging influence.

The concept of finding a person’s musical development/journey interesting and following it for that reason alone without actually liking what he currently does, seems to be alien to you. If I followed your line of thinking, I would have had to stop visiting Rainbow gigs by the time Graham Bonnet called it quits and avoided Gary Moore gigs altogether. But I wanted to see Paicey drum, is that so hard to understand?
From my point of view, otoh. your willful ignorance of BN’s body of work is fickle. You’re not really competent to judge what he did there except that you have a vague understanding of not liking it. Kinda superficial if you ask me, some kind of Blackmore connoisseur you are! 😎

I am not into BN albums, much too much candy floss, Schlagerkitsch, tin soldier programmed drums and woeful moaning for my liking…plus the fact that I heard some people doing what BN pretend to be doing in a much more convincing way…. some of them German or Irish, English or especially Czech. But I loved the shows. Candice was kind and into it, entertaining and positive and singing nice, the real drummer was fine, the fiddle player too and Ritchie…well he had his moments…. grabbing a strat and really taking off… brought tears to my eyes.

I couldn’t bring.myself to.watch those breathtaking videos in the first place. Now I do know why.
But live…that was a whole different story. There were some fine bits of playing… interplay included – and Ritchie shone occasionally. Some of his recorded solos on those albums are very rewarding too…but songwriting, arrangements and production and well…say tadte …leave a lot to be desired.

If he said that, what an idiot he was doing it. 😤 Some of Ritchie’s comments on black people and culture (and I don’t just mean the infamous “shoeshine music” quote), his admiration for Jimi Hendrix and approach of Phil Lynott to form a band notwithstanding, are definitely on the worrisome side. and Hammer) dragged him along to auditions as a potential replacement for Bob Daisley in 1979. Stone said that Blackmore simply refused to play with him, letting Cozy and David do the prolonged sessions as a trio with Clive. (Clive wasn’t a heavy rock player, it is true, but his treatment by Blackers was still shabby.)
Years ago, I saw a documentary on the modern day KKK (by now luckily a fringe group) and one longhaired and tattooed Klan member who also played electric guitar was a diehard Hendrix fan, his house in the woods decorated with Hendrix memorabilia (alongside Confederacy, Nazi and KKK items of devotion). He was totally confounded and thrown off by the question of the journalists whether that wasn’t somewhat irreconcilable and in the end spluttered that to him Hendrix wasn’t really black – the lengths some people will go to to align their conflicting beliefs … 🙄 🤯
