Yet another review of Splat! — this time, it’s from the Silent Radio.
The psychedelic, prog and classic rock legends Deep Purple have returned. And boy, have they come back heavy. The rock legends are best known for their hard rock edge, especially on classics like ‘Smoke On The Water’ (you know the riff), and ‘Highway Star’. With the newest release, SPLAT!, they have re-emerged with that sound, and it sounds great. So, let’s not waste any time with too much preamble, let’s just hear the bloody record (that’s what we’re all here for).

Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
Well, that was another nice review! The album seems to put most people in a benovelent and appreciative mood – no small feat and the opposite of going through the motions which DP given their decades of deployment could be forgiven for.

Well said ! This is why each album ( especially post RB ) should be appreciated for what-it-is, & not subjected to comparisons of previous efforts. They band for decades now, have had nothing to prove to anyone, but only to deliver the best that they can at the time.
My disc of the album should be here very soon, perhaps in a week-or-so, but postage delays from the UK are to be expected I suppose lol…
That said, a German Polydor 11-track CD edition of “Nobody’s Perfect” will be here in the next few days…And yes, I tried hard to secure a 2 x disc version with 3 x extra tunes from the reunion albums on-board, but the entry-fee for that luxury was simply unwarranted. I have the original LP, & haven’t heard it in years / decades.
I listened to “Live from Olympia” as a comparison to the Joe Satriani bootlegs I’ve been listening to in recent times, & wow, both are great musicians…Steve Morse is really-hot-in-the-mix on this recording, & I’d nearly forgotten what a great live album this is. Steve certainly expressed more musical freedom & explored more avenues than Joe did perhaps, but both remain 1st-class musicians for sure. They had different jobs to do, & both delivered exceedingly well imo.
At least the conversion for all my records & tapes to CD has nearly been completed.

Very-true indeed. My only gripe with these later live albums & why I don’t listen to them more often is simply because imo, there’s too-much of the classic-tunes from Machine Head carried over, like around 50% of the album in most cases. And though they’re different versions for sure, the definitive versions are well known & worn already, at least here at my place lol !
I think when the producers are selecting tracks for these live albums, more emphasis on the new tracks should be made. I’d rather a single-disc live release with newer tunes onboard, than a 2 x CD release that’s more-or-less “Made in Japan” revisited with extra’s added lol, though maybe I’m being a bit too harsh here.
On the night, for sure the band should play what they want, but when releasing a live album compiled from a number of shows, the new tunes should be brought forward & outnumber the older ones imo.

My copy of “Splat” arrived yesterday, & no-wonder why it’s getting rave reviews, as it totally moves forward from “=1” perfectly, with absolutely no-filler, only awesome tunes to get into.
I had it cranked-up on my 5.2-system, & was blown away…( Yes, I’ve added in recent times another sub-woofer to make it a 5.2 sound-system now, it’s not a typo lol ). The sound is awesome, DP’s production team have done another spectacular job imo !
And the artwork by Jeckyl & Hyde is impressive too, & worth noting.
Every song stands-out as a winner, though the last track “Splat” put a smile on my face, as the opening musical sequence was quite inspired I thought. More please 🙂 !
What can one say, it’s another 10/10 result imo, so well done everyone involved.
My only gripe would be Simon’s guitar sound that’s taking a little getting used to, as he’s generally playing the rear-pick-up mostly, & at times it approximates RB’s early DP sound when he played his Gibson. I simply love Stratocasters & tube-amps. His playing is superb however, as with the delivery of the rest of the band.
I look forward in time, to the next album indeed !
