You don’t wear that stupid shirt

Ian Paice was an inaugural guest on the Metal Sticks podcast, hosted by the recently retired from Iron Maiden Nicko McBrain and Modern Drummer CEO David Frangioni. The Made in Japan remix is mentioned as soon-to-be-released, so this must have been recorded some time in early August. Dig into the drummer talk!

Thanks to Blabbermouth for the heads-up.

Enjoyed that video, many thanks for posting. Loved Nicko’s shirt by the way. And the artwork on his drums, gongs etc. I bet Uwe was fascinated by that last bit with the cymbal stand and its little bits and pieces at the top. Can’t wait to hear his review of that, he he he. Good interview with Ian Paice and the positive comments regarding Gary Moore, nice one. Also the ‘heavy metal’ comments from Ian. Cheers.

Ian talked about video from the MIJ concerts they gathered together from someone and worked on and made it sound like it was going to be released with the new box set. Wonder what happened to that?

I like the format – even the hardware talk – and Nicko is a genuine nice guy as is David.

    Playing with Macca

(for the uninitiated: a long forgotten bassist/singer from that very much overrated 60s band from a nondescript Brit harbor(ur)r town, name escapes me right now, who had their producer write and play all their songs for them and who really wouldn’t have been good enough to be the vastly more talented DP’s stagehands, at least that is the conventional wisdom in Denmark where Ian Gillan I hear has always been very popular, albeit somewhat set back by the talents of Ronan Keating in more recent times)

sure left a lasting impression on Little Ian, he’s always going on about it. And that Paul is a tough taskmaster and has a real good set of ears is also something I have heard before.

Loved Nicko’s shirt by the way.

Let me clarify as the resident expert on all things sartorial, lieber Herr MacGregor, that Ian’s quip on the “stupid shirt” was not on Nicko’s extravagant piece (likely not available at Florida gasoline stations bargain bin sales), but he was referring (@10:06) to what he himself wore on the 1972 Japan tour and had forgotten about.

    Uwe Hornung says:

A merciful afterthought: It is always extremely gratifying and heartwarming to witness three drummers communicating with each other with something other than CRASH! BANG! WALLOP!. In the gloomy darkness of the multiple challenges they face there always shines an intrepid light of evolvability. 😇

    “Wonder what happened to that?”

I have a hunch, Chris, they saved that for a separate release. For commercial reasons or because they couldn’t get the source footage up to scratch to be ready for the audio release which they didn’t want to postpone.

We’ll see it soon enough I’m sure.

@ 3- feeling a little ‘fashion’ guilty are we Uwe? T-shirts, shirts and all that colour and style, who would have thought eh. Regarding all that ‘drummer’ talk, yes it is fascinating isn’t it? About as fascinating as guitarists going on about toggle switches, nuts, bridges etc etc. Musical terminology, isn’t it grand, only for the initiated though. Cheers.

    MacGregor says:

Talking of t- shirts and the like. Imagine if Johnny Rotten had a ‘I hate Ian Gillan’ t-shirt printed and accidentally wandered up to Denmark? We are well aware of his Pink Floyd effort from the 1970’s. Cheers.

    Micke says:

@ 7 That would obviously have been the end of Rotten.. a Viking axe is heavy to wear in your forehead.. 🙂

    @7 & 8

    Arhhh COME ON!

    First of all:
Johnny Rotten is a very nice guy, and he adores Ian I’m sure!

    Second:
I’m not allowed to have any weaponry on me, least of all axes 😄

(But I could put off milk in your coffee 😅)

McBrain and Frangioni appear to be hanging on Ian’s every word. Completely rapt.
Definitely no ‘Mr Grover, Mr Gillian’ here, even if Ian does call them Mr Glover and Mr Gillan.

The upcoming album: heavier, bolder drums. Promising
