More gospel from our America-lovin’ Brummie Buddhist! Has anybody noticed how Glenn adjusts his accent to the interviewers? He tunes in an Midlands inflection when speaking with North Americans (all Yanks die for Brit accents) and “Californicates” with people to whom English is a second language. I don’t even think he notices it. (You do make changes when speaking different languages, I for example speak English with a deeper voice than German, I don’t know why, I just do.)

So a trio tour it will be, never mind how only last year Glenn sang the praises on his Dutch keyboard player Bob Fridzema and wanted to work more with him in the future – not so. Not that ole Glenn can’t entertain in a trio format, I guess he wants the Chosen tour to echo more his Trapeze than his DP past.

So he fell in love with the US and Americans in 1971 while touring there with The Moody Blues. I always wondered – and does anyone know this here? – did he ever adopt US citizenship like DC did (no one ever asks him that)? It would be a logical thing for me to do, if I had lived in the US of A as long as Glenn has (or Ritchie for that matter), I would want to attain citizenship to do things like voting etc.

Finally no unreleased projects under the rug? What about the half finished Hughes Thrall II album or the additional recordings Pat and him would do decades later only to scrap them yet again? I want to see all of that come out with “City of Crime” as the bonus track!

Danke Daniel, so he’s a Yank since 2018, I didn’t know! Always wondered about it.

That makes six people from the colonies now in the Purple Family: Glenn, David, Tommy, Joe I, Joe II and Steve … At this rate, it can’t be long until they all chime in …

So there isn’t any chance of a vocal cameo like this one then Uwe. Nice and deep, bass no doubt, you could lift up to baritone perhaps to liven it up a little. Cheers. Go to 1:13 for the guide vocal commencing Uwe’s vocal training.

My German speaking voice isn‘t so deep, I always sound a bit adolescent, so my lowered English speaking voice just about sounds what you would expect from a 65-year-old. My son has a really, really deep and boomy voice, so deep he‘s hard to understand on a telephone call (those things just aren’t made for the frequencies he emits!). He already had that as a teenager so his classmates would always send him to the stores to buy the alcohol in hope he would not have to show age identification with his voice! 😂

Did you know the one about Biff Byford (lead singer of Saxon)? He‘s been wearing dentures for a long time and has two sets he calls his “talking teeth” and his “singing teeth”. When he accidentally uses his “talking teeth” to record, he gets all of these unwanted whistling noises and at one particular recording session it drove everybody mad because they thought it was a technical glitch of the recording equipment until it finally occurred to Biff that he had forgotten to swap dentures! MOJO did a feature on it titled The Strange Case of the Missing Singing Teeth. 😂

Come to think of it, given Glenn’s Blak Kuhn-tree background, shouldn’t he be pronouncing his universal spiritual messages “Music oss thuh ‘ealer!” (music is the healer) and “In thuh ‘ere an’ noo!” (in the here and now)? Authenticity is key in this day and age!

@4 – Uwe, Rod Evans also.

The american-born members were already there prior to his arrival, but also prior to their association with Purple.

So when he moved to the usa way back in 1969, it made him the first of the Purple Family to reside in the colonies.

    Ivica says:

    @4
    Herr Uwe
In my country, the rule of life is “Where your wife is born and you from there .”
So it’s not strange the choice of Ritchie and David became Yankees… Glenn ? his wife (Gabi) born in Germany ? so…

  11. 11
    Uwe Hornung says:

Skippy, I actually thought about Rod, I knew that he stayed in America in 1969, joined an American rock band, was with a US label, married an American and became a respiratory specialist with US health facilities – but I never read anything about him adopting US citizenship though that seems a likely turn of events given his other life choices.

If we add Rod and also consider Ritchie who has lived in the US for half a century, is married to an American and fathered two American teenagers, yet who likely only hasn’t become a Yank due to his usual obnoxious-obstructive self, then that brings up the Yank tally in DP to a stunning eight! They have – shock, gasp, horror – outnumbered the Brits who are at only six and the solitary Irishman!!!

  12. 12
    Uwe Hornung says:

Yes, Gabi is German, but I think Glenn met her in LA. Ritchie is still a UK citizen from what info is publicly available.

Not the most fertile bunch, the DP, uhum, members, huh?

Glenn is childless, Steve has a single child I think, Jon had a daughter in each marriage, Big Ian has a single child, Ritchie three kids (that we know of!) from two marriages, DC a daughter from marriage no 1 and a son from marriage no 2, Roger has three daughters from his first marriage and second major relationship, Paicey, another industrious rhythm section member, has also three children, Simon has two I think, Nick Simper a son (looking very much like him!) that I know of and Don has three kids as well. JoeLT has a daughter (and grandchildren) from a previous marriage and a recent son with Maya. Did I forget anyone? No idea if Rod Evans ever had children. Tommy of course died too young.

    Rock Voorne says:

    Hi Guys

Last night I came home, returning from the Zoetermeer show.
Wrote a review, clicked a wrong button so it vanished.

In recent years it became harder for me, healthwise, to go to shows.

GH was the only ticket this year, again, I bought some time ago.

Before when I was in pain and the music touched me it kinda diminished and lifted me up.

    Not this time.

    DISCLAIMER :

I think I witnessed, not sold out, an enthusiastic crowd, not only grey boomers and baldies, but also lovely modellooking young women.
    Maybe related to the band?

I saw parents with kids and even an 88 year old going along with her daughter. WOW.

The support act may have evolved from a trashmetal band into a more polished powermetalthing but the singer annoyed me, and…..the music , it wasnt for me.

It did not help the volume was way too loud, ran away inbetween to find toiletpaper to plug into my ears, took some painkillers, suffering from several pains….

For a band that started in 2003 they act energetic.
Appealling on the audience with crap about heavymetal made me think :
Do they know Glenns music? What does Glenn think of the tag metal today?
Theres a recording(Heino, I think)where he gets angry and screams that some parts of the audience expect the wrong music.
“THIS IS GLENN HUGHES MUSIC, NOT A FUCKING HEAVYMETAL SHOW.!!!”
    But that was 95/96?

During our formative years we DP fans often had a hard time to get into what GH brought to the table but imho we also often grew into it, acquired a taste for it.

Like the many other influences DP made me listen to, GH had his own idols which thus made inroads into my world.
    Stevie, Marvin.

Never liked his Michael Jackson/Prince influence though, the ocd high shriekings that often ruined a great song.

It was lost on me the again had reverted back to the trio format.
    DAMNED!

Hey Glenn, what did you do to my Rotterdam man Bob?!
I really need to hear the keys, the more Hammond the better, incl his solosongs.

Last night I wrote the setlist more or less complete but I was tired, I think, and managed to loose the text.

So,like always,I write something new which just flows out of me, ok?

SETLISTS are to be found somewhere I think, so I m not going to try that again.

    Well, maybe a bit.

Trapeze, Hughes/Thrall, 1 Iommitrack called GRACE , 3 BBC songs, one seemed to remind me of Stevie Wonder meets Trampled Underfoot.

The 3 new songs, incl some U2 like guitar, Soren really came through, he can play anything, I dont know, they dont touch me.

AGAIN no making up for leaving out STORMBRINGER , he did Stormbringer in the past and a bit of HB shooter and I think Holy Man.

And he did some solotracks I like, Kill me, Cant stop the flood….Started the show with SOULMOVER.
But I dont know, its too bare, too bold, too heavy for me.

TheAddiction tour showed how much it differed, compaired to the studiotakes, when a DP keyboard sound is added.

So 2 acts, both mostly guitar attackdriven approach.

If this is a farewellshow/tour, he doesnt seem to ve a clue and indeed talks way too much/often the same things, makes jokes about it….

Again telling us he cant do DP songs all his life, but he already said that in the 90 s.
So we dont know what he ll do.

If this is his farewelltour I think the setlist/approach is wrong.

I did almost enjoy certain songs like the acoustic COAST TO COAST, the bcc tracks, the first step of love and ofcourse he could not resist, enfing with BURN.
It says a lot that this songs gets people going even with the Hammond.

Way back in 94 when I all of a sudden got the privilege to see the man play in Leidschendam on Vlietpop I was thrilled hearing, for the first time ever so many mk 3 and 4 songs.
After 3 decades, many shows later…..I dont need these tracks.

I was glad to hear WAY BACK TO THE BONE and CTC but really so many much better solotracks, personal ofcourse, but I missed the more mellow, funkified soulman.

It was the first show of the tour, did not know that before yesterday.
So although sounding fresh and tight maybe some stuff might get changed?

Didnt recognise Ash Sheehan who the last time was with beard, long hair and now everything short/shaven.

And unlike with the DP tours, I did not hear his great MK3 Paicey worthy drumming.

Ahhhh, well,I dont come here often anymore and who cares these relatively negative sour words from me?

    Uwe Hornung says:

RV, good to hear from you again and thanks for the GH review.

I’m always torn between Glenn’s trio gigs and having an added keyboarder. Like you, I really love keyboards, but I also notice that Glenn plays even more gung-ho and upfront when he’s replicating the Trapeze format – and I like that too.

Ahhhh, well ,I dont come here often anymore …

Why not, did we do something bad? We miss you, Holländer!

    Uwe

Thanx but I dont have the illusion my 2 cts really matter.

My writings and other activities have shrunken due to being shackled by medical issues.
    7 years now.
But here and there I feel prompted.

Must admit instead of following THS with a fury I now more or less waste my time on X.

The rest of the time in my prolonged personal lockdown since my crash in 2020.

    TMI probably.

A man must have a hobby they say.

I have many interests but combined with the lack of energy and more and more going on incl mediaoverkill I find THS these days a task, not a joy.

Like your writings but its all a bit too much for me these days.
