IAN GILLAN, HIGHWAY STAR
Deep Purple's Lead Singer Takes Life on the Road

Blake Publishing and Seven Hills Book Distributors announce the publication of Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purple's Lead Singer by Ian Gillan with David Cohen ($10.95, ISBN 1-85782-320-6, October). A rock and roll singer for over 30 years, Gillan's book is a time capsule of life on the road. The book contains a full discography and detailed tour schedules for Gillan's entire career.

With guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, Gillan and Deep Purple were one of the original super groups to come out of the 1970's. Their albums, Machine Head and Made in Japan, are giants in the rock pantheon. Gillan's place in history is cemented with his vocals on such classic rock staples as Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin', Highway Star and Woman From Tokyo. Gillan is also known for his original interpretation as Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar.

In his autobiography, Gillan tells the stories that have become legendary. In addition to life on the road with Rod Stewart, George Harrison and Jeff Beck, he gives his account of what actually happened at Montreux, the night of Smoke on the Water. Gillan also writes about his dealings with music business people and how they robbed him of hundreds of thousands of dollars in royalties and performance fees, eventually leading him to bankruptcy.

But Gillan proved to be resilient. He made a series of comebacks with the Ian Gillan Band, Black Sabbath and others before returning to the band that made him famous, Deep Purple. Their latest release, Abandon, proves their lasting popularity.

Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purple's Lead Singer is published by Blake Publishing and distributed exclusively in the United States by Seven Hills Book Distributors. Seven Hills has been a major distributor of international publishers and small domestic presses for nearly two decades. From its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, it provides book distribution, marketing and publicity services to 65 publishers in ten countries.
