Nine years worth of breaking my back

rainbow_live_in_dusselforf_1976_vinylRainbow In Concert 1976 — Live in Düsseldorf is slated to be released on vinyl as a 3LP. The show was just re-released as part of The Temple of The King 1975 – 1976 box set, but apparently it has never been previously available on vinyl. HMV has an orange vinyl special, while other retailers offer good old black.

Track list:

Disc 1

  1. Kill the King
  2. Mistreated
  3. Sixteenth Century Greensleeves

Disc 2

  1. Catch the Rainbow
  2. Man On the Silver Mountain

Disc 3

  1. Stargazer
  2. Still I’m Sad

Release date has been pencilled in for June 26, 2026.

Speaking of high noons, Louder Sound rehashes a Classic Rock feature on Stargazer:

“We’ve made a lot of progress between the first and second LPs,” Blackmore told Hit Parader in 1976. “It’s kind of more representative music now, before it was just some songs that we had written and put them down as just a hobby, really.

“This time we went into the studio answer to a more as a band. Before, it was just a few friends of ours, with the exception of Ronnie. Now it’s more directed; each member of the band has a say on the LP. More drums, more bass, more keyboards as well as vocals.”

Thanks to our editor emeritus Benny Holmström for the vinyl heads-up.

Are you guys at THS attempting to stir up Uwe Hornung, he he he. If so we all will be right behind you and we all will give Uwe something to complain about. Somewhere over the Rainbow, this will keep that grumpy old man busy at his keyboard. Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

No worries, I find the format in which music from the Rising era is published largely irrelevant! 😂 But this release is natürlich great for all vinylistas (and especially that sizable portion of them who is NOT colorblind). I’m just not one of them.

For what Dio era Rainbow was, Düsseldorf is a mighty fine testimony and infinitely preferable to the domesticated and weirdly sequenced On Stage. The band was certainly on fire.

    David Black says:

What the world needs is not another release of previously available material but the remaining on stage tracks including to holy of holys the live LITB, to be released. I would then die a contented man.

From what I understand Munich was recorded by the band, Anyone have any Idea why it has never came out ?

    Uwe Hornung says:

My guess would be technical issues with the recording equipment. As a live band Rainbow were relatively consistent at the time so I doubt it could have been the performance.

@4 some tracks have been released on “live in germany”. Also there is one track from Mannheim

What I’d like to know is which of the gigs is best? Köln, Dusseldorf, Nuremberg is the best night. Got the live in Koln RDS version n wondering if it’s worth getting the Dusseldorf version. I’ve got them on CD.

@4 My theory: because there is Munich 1977 (Rockpalast video + album), they ditched Munich 1976, because except for us experts here, noone would understand what is what.

“Mannheim” is supposed to have been a typo for “Munich”, I think.

3 actual Munich ’76 songs released in the original “Live in Germany 1976” plus a further one on Ritchie’s “Rock Profile Vol. II” CD.

My personal theory is Uwe issued a cease-and-desist, as in “enough of this Rising-era stuff already!”

    Cheers, J.-

PS. So, we have “Do You Close Your Eyes” pro-shot 1976 TV video from Munich AND its pro-audio soundtrack on “Live in Germany 1976” (it matches, I checked)…any video editing wizards out there? 🙂

How unfair, Julio, I am to Dio era Rainbow what Hagen was to Siegfried in the Nibelungen, a faithful servant and protector at all times!
