Aloha from Hawaii

Don Airey appeared in early April on the Hawaii Public Radio podcast Road Stories with Dave Lawrence to promote his latest solo album Pushed to the Edge, in the process delving into other corners of his illustrious career. The questions he was asked were rather interesting, so the conversation is not the same old, same old. Enjoy!

    Interesting interview indeed.

Don’s dad was right, culturally The Beatles ended the post-war period. My mom was born 1930, but she just loved everything the Beatles did, any time they’d come on our Blaupunkt radio in the kitchen, she’d turn it up, I was raised on that music long before Deep Purple.

I also agree that the audiences that mainly stream their music and those who want vinyl or CD are mutually almost exclusive and very separate. And I’m not qualifying, I think a major appeal of streaming is the mobility entailed. It doesn’t tie you down like a vast CD or record collection does – ask my wife! -, the younger generation wants to be mobile, no car, little furniture, no bulky stereo or TV, not vast amounts of books and CDs, not too many clothes and shoes. Anything so that you can be on the move anytime and set up camp somewhere else. Possessions are aligned to their flexible life style, you need a smartphone, a tablet and maybe a decent bicycle and a backpack, a place to sleep and something to wear – and then you are mostly set for urban life. It’s not necessarily a bad or superficial thing.

I love that Don likes Billie Eilish, can’t wait for him to guest on one of her albums.

But why shouldn’t Randy Rhoads have listened to Johnny Winter, liked what he heard and try to learn a riff or two? Randy had lots of influences and most guitarists I know find Winter’s natural talent and his hyperactive, raw playing appealing – Blackmore and my son are just two of them.

Jon Lord was a Jimmy Smith fan too:

Is it just me or is Don’s likeness with Vincent Price growing?

    My sentiments exactly!
He’d changed dramatically since the fun Rainbow days.
But maybe he needs to dress sharper 🤭

Vincent Price is back again. When you summon evil, strange things begin to happen, Don had better be careful. Cheers.

Thanks for the Don Airey interview by the way, it was good to hear a few different stories from him, especially in regards to his family. Cheers.
