In the white room with purple curtains

Glenn Hughes spoke to Australian magazine Loud promoting his upcoming tour with Music of Cream. He also mentioned that the new Black Country Communion album is due in mid September, and some sort of Purple-related movie is in the works (although it’s not clear whether it will be a documentary or based-on-real-events feature film). Q: […]

Alright, hold tight

A Japanese documentary on the Highway Star has been posted to Youtube. And in 43+ minutes it covers a big chunk of Mark 2 history besides the song itself. Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, and Chris Charlesworth (of Illustrated Biography fame) were inteviewed, with some stock footage of Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore as well. While the narration is in Japanese, the extensive interviews are not overdubbed, which makes it easier to piece together the story with some background knowledge about the band. (watch inside)

Having a glass of lemonade

A 1981 vintage interview with Ian Gillan, done by Australian journalist Donnie Sutherland is available on Getty Images. Since they are trying to sell those clips, there appears no possibility to show it here, but you can watch the interview clips for free (albeit watermarked) if you head over there.

Judas, Jesus, and Mary

Australian site Urban Cinefile has a longish backstory for the creation of Jesus Christ Superstar, as told by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself: Work started on the album of JCS in early 1970. Murray Head would be our Judas but who would play Jesus and Mary? Tim and I were total unknowns so we couldn’t do […]

There were no goodbyes

Couple of weeks ago Team Rock did a small feature focusing on Big Ian talking about the truly sad state of affairs in the band surrounding his departure in 1973. Here is the quote: It was bizarre, actually. Because I had actually handed in my letter of resignation to the band months earlier, while we […]

Knebworth and Machine Head books in the works

Two new books of interest are being prepared for publication. The first one — For One Night Only by Jerry Bloom — tells the story of Knebworth 1985 gig, which became legendary in Britain for the simple reason of being the only live appearance of the band in their home country on the reunion tour: […]

From matings of giant pandas to mafia funeral

British paper The Guardian has published a retrospective of their coverage of heavy metal “from its inception almost 50 years ago”. The interesting part are the reproductions of two contemporary reviews of seminal Purple performances: the premiere of the Concerto for Group and Orchestra and the California Jam. Attempts to unite European “classical” music with […]

Battle of Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix

Our Japanese correspondent sent in this interesting piece of Mk1 memorabilia. It is one of those compilations that can now be considered as bizarre, but at the time probably made quite a lot of sense to the record company. I bought this at a second-hand record shop in the 1970’s. Entitled “Battle of Deep Purple […]

Amiable bane of rock journalists

Guitar World has posted an interview with Ritchie Blackmore that first appeared in their magazine in February 1991 issue. It is fairly entertaining and it aged well, so it’s worth a revisit even if you have seen it the first (or the second) time around. “Are you ready?” I ask, and Blackmore nods his assent. […]

They ended up at the Grand Hotel

Tribune de Genève has an account of Roger Glover revisiting the site of the Grand Hotel. The hotel itself has closed long time ago and the building now houses a pharmacy and a business school on the ground floor with upscale condo in the upper floors. As such, the building is normally not accessible to […]
