Thanks for the little Jon Lord talk show host cameo. Can’t beat early morning breakfast tv, as long as the tea and or coffee is of very good quality. As the serious and professional musicians often do, they always keep moving forward, evolving etc. Jon’s answer to the predictable, “would you be interested in a DP reunion” a banal a question as you could possibly get and that was only after a year or two from him leaving DP. Cheers.

    Hello.

What is that thing with the Germans?
Poor Jon had no chance whatsoever to talk himself a little bit too, in this “talk-show” ?!

…hope they have learnt some foreign languages after this episode in Germany, too. Unbelieveable lame!

As this video once again shows, there´s no other gentleman like the late Jon Lord. Wise, intelligent and humorous human being.

    Kippis.

I have all of Jon’s post Deep Purple Releases. They are all excellent!! My Favorite is “To Notice Such Things”!! I wonder if there is any remaining material that hasn’t been released.

    @2

Hiza are you calling our friendly neighbours from Germany lame? 😆

But oh man you’re right, there is not many like Jon Lord!
He had finesse, he was so funny, he seemed to really like other people, and he was a genius.
I might have linked to this before, but please listen, it is BEAUTIFUL:

Ian’s voice adds to this song, sooo much 😍
I’m a shivering pile of tears every time I hear it, so to avoid drying out completely I only listen to it once in a while ☺️

And Kippis right back at ya!

Jon in his usual fine form with the quick wit.

    Uwe Hornung says:

The ole charmer! “Do you want me to wake her up now?” 😂

It was good for Jon to leave DP – he had other things to do. I wish he would have had more time to do them.

Gentlemen Jon, great character, warm man ..with these “parachutes” in the studio .I would love to see Ritchie in this situation ,before Candice tamed him…

    Manic Miner says:

@3 Leslie, I totally agree. And the output is quite diverse. For example (to quote a title) “To Notice Such Things” is so much different than “Boom of the Tingling Strings”, yet they are both excellent. I love all of his post DP output, only small exception is the studio re-recording of the concerto. It is OK, but I vastly prefer both the 1969 and 1999 RAH recordings.

As much as I always admired his musical skills (the J. S. Bach of our own lifetime – both in case of instrument ability and composition-wise) – equally I always loved his speaking voice and infectious, giggly laughter. Sweet, heartwarming and unique, lovely to listen to. 100 % of class in 101 % of charm. The one and only, Jon.

The “quality” of the interview is further proof of how bad television, a theoretically wonderful invention, can unfortunately be.
This SAT-1 format is quite obviously a program for the mentally deranged.

It shows once again that the serious suits of our childhood on TV, with their restraint and composure, tended to be much more professional and sophisticated in terms of content than a bunch of crazy weirdos who compulsively want to be funny and come across as flippant and brash, as if they had taken another pinch of coke during every commercial break.

Jon Lord is brilliant, of course, and helps the presenters avoid being summoned by their boss with his witty answers. It’s great how he turns crap into gold with his answers. In that respect, the link is great because Lord is great.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Hey, it’s a morning show/housewives’ TV, what do you guys expect? Deep interviews while mother is preparing the sandwiches for the kids to go to school? 🤗😂

And then apparently with (quite charming) Scandinavian immigrants to boot … 😈

The practice of having to recap in German everything Jon said in English of course eats a lot of time that could otherwise have been used for more in-depth questions, but, alas!, that was customary in shows like that back then. Subtitles or a simultaneous translation voiceover would have been more effective.

But at least we now know that with both Frühstück and Wortspiel Jon was really quite fluent in German! 😎

#12 and Jon’s fluidity in German:
I saw his penultimate show (I think) with the Jon Lord Blues Project in Rottweil, a small town some 100 km away from Stuttgart. It was a wonderful evening and Jon apologized for having to express his joy about the show and the audience’s reaction in English: “Sorry my German is not good enough to say how glad we are” (or something to this extent); someone from the band shouted something in the background along the lines of “Oh, on last night’s dinner you were talking rather well” on which Jon simply replied “Ah, give me two bottles of wine and I speak any language you want me to!”

    MacGregor says:

I can imagine Jon would have preferred being somewhere else at that time, anywhere most probably. Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson did a comic send up of all that tv am rubbish back in the late 1980’s, a classic it is and so true. Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Christof, that is sooooooo something for Pete York to holler from behind his kit! 😂

Pete of course has been living in Germany since the 70s and is actually fluent, with a very charming englische Akzent and the occasional grammar cockup.

  16. 16
    Christof says:

    Uwe, that’s right!
Pete York always was a wonderful conférencier at all of the Olympic Rock & Blues Circus shows (and the Jon Lord Blues Project was more or less just a continuation of that) :-)! His accent was as tasteful as his drumfills!
On this show I also learned a clear “Don’t!”: Maggie Bell wanted to sit on Jon’s bench behind the organ besides him – but obviously he didn’t really like that as with a determined swing of his hip he pushed her away from the bench 😂

  17. 17
    Uwe Hornung says:

Christof, I think that was a belated attempt of him to do the bump! Anything to attract attention.

It’s too bad that Jon’s and Paicey’s gig with Maggie Bell at the Royal Festival Hall im London in the summer of 1978 is both visually and aurally much shrouded in mystery.

    https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/maggie-bell–5710578

I remeber an NME review of it at the time, but Jon and Little Ian were only mentioned in passing and that they “ably backed” her.

    Uwe Hornung says:

The (preceding, but non-charting) BCR version had definitely more swagger and panache!

    Jon even sang in German!

    Uwe Hornung says:

First Nasenloch song I’ve ever heard, that‘s for sure. But I‘m relieved that Jon lent his voice to the subject of facial orifices only.

As for the venue: emptiness, eagles & snow! 😂

  21. 21
    MacGregor says:

Who booked that Switzerland gig for Purple, madness. Oh that’s right, management, sitting in an office somewhere nice and warm no doubt. Cheers.

  22. 22
    Tillythemax says:

@20 But, lieber Uwe, isn’t he singing ‘Was ist mit mein(er) Nase los’?

  23. 23
    Uwe Hornung says:

Your guess is as good as mine, Tilly!

  24. 24
    Beate Flohr says:

    @22 and 23
I heard just like Tilly did.

  25. 25
    Uwe Hornung says:

Whatever then, I‘ve been to too many loud rock concerts (and stood beside too many loud hi-hats in rehearsal rooms) to credibly argue against that. What did you say?

We have a refrigerator in the kitchen which allegedly starts beeping when I leave the door open; of course my wife has made that up only to harass me, when in reality there is no audible beep, at least for me there isn‘t. Whoever hears the beep has to close it!

  26. 26
    MacGregor says:

@ 25 – Are you sure that is not ‘selective hearing’ Uwe. He he he, something most of us can be guilty of at any time no doubt. I did say ‘some’ of us. Cheers.
