It’s never too late for a first

Extra! Extra! Ian Paice announces his first ever solo album, which should be out some time before the end of the next (2026) year, and promises this to be “not a drumming album”. Bonus: a drum cam(s) video of Lucifer from the Turning to Crime sessions.

    MacGregor says:

What about ‘let there be drums’ or ‘the drums are back’? Just an album full of drumming (Cozy would be rapt), it is what we all need. As long as it has a little swing that is. Otherwise there would be some here who could end up rabid and frothing at the mouth. Seriously though, I hope the drums sound ‘normal’ on his album and he has control over that, as he use to all those years ago. Cheers.

    BreisHeim says:

Ian Paice is my most favorite drummer of all time.
I have my $$$ ready to purchase his album.
    I can’t wait.
I wonder who the other musicians on it are….
(he was rather elusive about this)

    Russ 775 says:

Well… this is great news. To say that I’m as pleased as punch would be an gross understatement.

Yes, Uwe… in case you’re wondering, I too am a drummer.

    Karin Verndal says:

    Alright Ian Paice!

Actually I read about it at Facebook but I thought it was a tale like so many things in there are.

But maybe it is true then that Ritchie Blackmore is appearing at the next Purple Record? 😄 no even I, a stone cold crazy woman from Denmark, won’t believe that ☺️😉

    Ivica says:

Where exactly is the song “Lucifer”?
It’s hard for me to write…but they really disguised that song. Bob Seger had vocal energy, he sang so passionately. Surely the great Ian would have done the same in the 197 would have sung it betters. Steve Morse tried to minimize the damage with his guitar melodic aacrobatics

    Bo Jack says:

At last after more than 50 years almost all members (current and former) will have a solo albums!

  7. 7
    Max says:

Hallelujah! Great news for x-mas at last!

I had the pleasure to talk to IP about the pissibolity of a solo album but he said he was unsure if someone would buy it when it was ‘just me’.

So please folks let’s prove his doubts all wrong!

I’m really excited and can’t wait to listen to it. And the mire drums, the more swing the better!

    Al says:

Turning Crime should not considered an official Dee Purple album. What a piece of garbage and sad way for Steve Morse to finish his career with Deep Purple

  9. 9
    John says:

#6: Yep! Rod Evans did a solo single, that’s as close as he got. And Nick Simper never did a solo album. But now with Paicey’s upcoming album, everyone else from the band has done one!

Well Max, I’ll buy the usual 3 copies: 1 cd, 1 download and 1 cd more to replace the first I either lend out or loose somehow…

It is indeed good news 😊

  11. 11
    Max says:

Karin, that’s real devotion. I guess I’ll get three copies as well and give two of them away. I’d love an album with stuff in the vein of Wring That Neck , the 1999 RAH version.

  12. 12
    Karin Verndal says:

    @11

Well Max, what can I say?
Indeed I am a devotee to Purple, the branches in general and Ian (Gillan that is) in particular!

Hey, I have even ordered the Ian Gillan Band box set….. even though I’m not a fan of jazz fusions…
So of course I will buy 3 copies 😃

Yeah, I really look forward to hear the maestro in drumming 💜

    Merry drumming!

Like Max @7 I also have had the pleasure to talk with the Man couple of times, too. It was nice to note to him (already met and discussed the possibility of something being released by him as a solo performer) in London 2002 (!) that he eventually kind of did release his solo effort, when the dvd “Not For The Pro´s” first was published.

He was clearly moved that I mentioned that. What a guy, what a character, what a time keeper. Great and humble human being. And nowadays more and more kind of spokesperson of the band, don´t you think?

And there is also the dvd with Chad Smith from 2005, too. The rhythm couple joined forces to celebrate the London Drum Company´s launch in 2004.

What I really have waited for all these times is the big band kind of release by Mr. Paice. As you know that´s the dear hobby of his.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49a68NUMK9o

I guess MacGregor at least know what I´m talking about. : ) The drums are not back. They have always been here and they always will. And as you know…drummer does it in rhythm. : )

    Kippis!

    AndreA says:

Happy holidays, happy Christmas to everyone here 💜 especially to Karin, who, like me, loves Gillan deeply, so, I think I love her… Or is it just a Scandinavian charm? But what do I know…🤣
    🍾 🥂

    Karin Verndal says:

    @15

    AndreA! 😃

Thank you but I am pretty sure you must stop drinking eggnog now! 😄

Yeah, Ian is really something else, isn’t he? And so are the rest of the band!

  17. 17
    MacGregor says:

Indeed regarding Ian’s long awaited ‘solo’ album. I think every drummer associated with the bands that I am into has released a solo album at some point in their career. Well most of them, and it just makes me wonder what Ian has been up to all this time. Sitting around twiddling his thumbs, he probably practices paradiddles while he is doing that, he he he! Oh well, he has been rather busy so if we can wait a little longer. Like Phil Collins, Bill Bruford and Simon Phillips, it will or could have a jazz back ground to it and also an instrumental or three I suspect. Although those three drummer are involved in the songwriting as such, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way for a solo album. Nick Mason’s “Fictitious Sports” album from 1981 was entirely written by Carla Bley, the USA jazz musician, composer and conductor.. Nick just provided the background for it, and a connection or two. Here’s hoping. Cheers.

@ 15 – be incredibly careful AndreA, look at what happened to René, Karin’s alleged partner. I use the word alleged as none of us really know if he exists at all, or is he just a convenient figment of Karin’s imagination. Cheers.

Yeah I saw that too 😃
Maybe Roger had been naughty beforehand 🤓

But yes, that record is really something to look forward to 😊

    Karin Verndal says:

    @18

    MacGregor – a spider! 😁

Well I have a question for you: will you tell me about the spiders that live on your island?

In Denmark we have no dangerous spiders, and I tell you: if we had I would live in a wooden cabin very high up in a tree!
But we have cross spiders in abundance, and sadly indoor we have house spiders, very big fellas that always make me shiver 😝
    See this 😩
    https://youtu.be/SGLsJlMvQpU

I actually consider moving to northern Norway, Sweden or Finland because there I can live in peace without these horrible creatures. But I would miss the warmth, so how is the spider situation at Tasmania?

    This:
    https://youtu.be/qzhKr7ZLCc0
Makes me think it’s perfectly ok to be scared of spiders!
If Ian is scared of these creeps, then I certainly don’t mind being it too!

And to end this I will link to a beautiful song with Ian:

well, no wonder he got the nickname “The Stinking Hippie” 😛

On the other hand, it seems many high profile people are envious of the position of little Ian Paice lately !

    Skippy O'Nasica says:

Too bad it’s not going to be a “drumming album”, as it likely would have been had Paice made it back in the original Deep Purple days.

One can only dream of the drum duets / duels he might have done back then, with guys who have since passed on like Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, Ginger Baker… Or retired, like Bill Bruford and Phil Collins.

Better late than never, though. It will be interesting to hear how it will sound. Fingers crossed for some tunes – maybe some instrumentals – where he will have space to shine and be the star of the show.

    MacGregor says:

@ 21- you can research almost anything online these days Karin, even all the creepy crawlies out there. However, this is a music site after all. Keeping it musical, here is Aunty Alice and The Black Widow from 1975. Cheers.

    MacGregor says:

@ 21 – Yes that spider story from Ritchie when Deep Purple were in Australia is amusing. Poor ole Gillan, ‘I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die’ ha ha ha, what a drama queen he is. You would think that if he was a ‘naturist’ as Ritchie called him, that he would be use to all things natural from the great outdoors. What a wimp he is. Talking of creepy crawlies in your mouth when sleeping, my Dutch friend told me that when she first moved to Oz she was woken one night with a cockroach in her mouth. True story. She was NOT impressed. She still resides here though, forty plus years later. Cheers.

    Hello.

Skippy @ 23. Bill Bruford is indeed playing again. I was lucky and had a very rare chance to see him play last September, here in Finland at Pori. (Here´s sample from Trading Boundaries, although.)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EWpXtUZyXI&list=RD6EWpXtUZyXI&start_radio=1

He he. I really just didn´t remember Ritchie telling that story about Gillan being a naturist. Scary part of the peculiar tale is, that it´s true. But it´s a free world (almost) isn´t it ?

…and before I leave, here´s one for us all reminding of the days when music was genuine and interesting.

    @24 & 25

Yes I can google everything, but it’s much better to ask a person who actually knows stuff 😃
And thank you the link to Alice Cooper 😊
Keep it musical? Well ok then ☺️

And re Ritchie’s story about Ian: in Ian’s world famous autobiography he explains the situation quite differently! He says that he woke up because this deadly (it was deadly) spider descended from the ceiling and reached his nose and he blew it away with all his might. And later som staff at the hotel told him it indeed was a deadly spider 😱
But no running around the hotel several times 😄

  28. 28
    Karin Verndal says:

    @26

Hiza, Ian is a naturist 😊 it’s not against the law, but I do think it must be chilly now and then 🥶

I believe his adorable wife joined him 😊

Spiders? Ok then…. Don’t let me link to the time where I caught a gigantic spider in the house and screamed the country down while doing it 😄

  29. 29
    MacGregor says:

@ 27- the trouble is Karin, the ‘deadly’ spiders out here in Australia do not descend from greater heights. They are ground or tree dwellers. Unless a funnel web spider crawled up onto the bed or something and Ian thought it lowers itself down its single cobweb strand straight into his mouth (funnel webs don’t do that and either do redback’s). It all sounds really dramatic though, don’t we think. Things that go bump in the night. It was probably Ritchie playing a prank on Ian. Someone should make a short horror movie about it, but it probably has already be done. Cheers.

I knew Karin would get her way, I must be more disciplined against spells casters. Cheers.

    MacGregor says:

@ 26 – regarding Bill Bruford playing drums again, it is good to see. After being academic for quite some time and touring occasionally giving lectures etc, he walked past the kit one day (as he had done a zillion times before in his retirement) and as he had all the other things completed in life that he needed to do, he then thought, why not’? Lucky you Hiza, seeing the maestro in that trio, a rather nifty band they are. Nice and laid back in small venues, wonderful. Cheers.

My recommendation for a title would be:

Mr Paice’s Young Man’s Guide to Gentlemanly and Intelligent Drumming

It’s lovely to see Little Ian interact with the music even in a studio recording session.

  33. 33
    Skippy O'Nasica says:

@26 Hiza – wow, didn’t know. Thanks for sharing, very cool! Nice playing from all three players.

  34. 34
    MacGregor says:

I am seeing a image of a classic Ritchie prank with him holding a fishing rod with a little feather on the end of the line. Dangling it over the ceiling light or chandelier and slowly lowering it just so it lightly brushes Ian’s nose or lips and if he was snoring, straight into his mouth. Can anyone else see that happening back in the day. Spider, what spider? Cheers.

    Karin Verndal says:

    @29 & 30

Ouch, so strolling along all happy and cheerful, and then BAM suddenly I am deadly injured?

No spells casted anywhere MacGregor! I’m just an innocent girlie from the cold North 🥶😃

Well, since you don’t find SRV to be something special, what do you think of this guy then:

Sometimes he amazes me, other times I’m bored out of my wits.
