A side project going for ten years

Don Airey was interviewed by the Classic Rock magazine about his latest solo album Pushed to the Edge.

Where did you record it?

There’s a studio outside Cambridge in a place called Harston. It’s run by the son of a very old friend of mine. It’s got a big old analogue desk and he’s a shit-hot engineer. Each day I’d be up at half past five in the morning and work out what we were going to do. We tried to do two tracks a day, then start the third track for the next day, get a little bit of prep in.

Simon told me that at the end of the day that the guys were going out to the car park like: “Phew, we got through that! I wonder what the old boy’s going to give us tomorrow?” Leonard Bernstein said: “What you need for good work is a plan, but not quite enough time to put it into operation.” He was quite right.

Nice to hear Don mention Focus, that almighty Dutch band from the early 1970’s. Karin will have to admit that even Ian Gillan couldn’t match Thijs van Leer vocally. Well, he could have a try at least, especially while they were up in Switzerland. Even Roger could have a go at that, he resides up that way doesn’t he? That Ritchie story is hilarious, rock ‘n roll eh? Cheers. P.S. Karin you have to listen to all of it, no cheating now! Get those Clogs on.

How does that one prophetic Rainbow 🌈 song go again?

Wrong footwear can make you lose out with wimmin real quick, Herr MacGregor, much like underwear, they are merciless in their judgement. Aspire to be like Paul Weller!

Clogs don’t cut it, even for curlies with a penchant for astronomics.

To be honest, in his prime Big Ian could match Van Leer’s falsetto and he certainly had a better chest voice and variety of screams. So, Ian is ahead for me.

@ 5- but could big Ian yodel? I was being a bit silly about it all in that sense, Focus were primarly an instrumental band and miles ahead of most bands at that time with the talented musicians within the band. The lineups I knew from the early to mid 70’s at least. I was attempting (sadly) to bait Karin, but she back handed that one and I felt I had better say no more about it (fear took over me). However, I still feel rather confident that Thijs could out yodel big Ian back in those days, but I could be very wrong on that. Has anyone ever heard Ian yodel? Cheers.
