Whitesnake Unzipped

Whitesnake Unzipped cover art

If you prefer the non-screaming, soulful side of Coverdale’s voice, this one might be for you.

Rhino Records is releasing a compilation of Whitesnake’s acoustic (or almost acoustic) tracks, titled Unzipped. The 5CD+DVD deluxe set will include a collection of live performances and studio outtakes. It will also be available in stripped down 1CD, 2CD and 2LP editions. Release date is October 19.

Disc 1 will be available on all editions, disc 2 on 2CD, 2LP and deluxe, while the rest is only on the deluxe edition.

We are not sure if the video disc will be in DVD or blu-ray format. Anyway, the 1997 recording was done only in SD as the HD technology was not available back then.

  1. 1
    Jacob Ferderigos says:

    I’m in 🤘🏻

  2. 2
    Kevin Kober says:

So, Starkers In Tokyo; Here I go over and over again? Seriously?

  3. 3
    Uwe Hornung says:

It’s what I always say: If DC just let his rich baritone voice do the talking (or singing) and give up that painful falsetto screaming against the mayhem of his heavy-handed band (which he never did well in the first place – already around the Slide It In tours his voice showed considerable strain that never went away again – and which he obviously can’t do anymore), there is still a great vocalist to be heard. The “mystery” to his voice is that it is best when he does little with it.

Where is Rick Rubin when you need him?! I would want him to produce a stripped down album with ole DC.

  4. 4
    Philippe Warda says:

I really love starkers but is this worthwhile?

  5. 5
    Blackwood Richmore says:

David Coverdale’s Whitesnake is so big, that it even has it’s own little ‘mini me’ Whitesnake… & even that little Whitesnake is bigger than your snake!. 😅

  6. 6
    Buttockss says:

Dog……never heard this song. What album is this from ?

  7. 7
    nupsi59 says:

    I love David Coverdale’s voice, when he’s singin’ “Paul Rodgers-stylish”, but…
    5 (!) CDs plus DVD? That’s a musical overkill!

    Have a nice Day!

  8. 8
    Andy says:

Is this too much of a good thing? Also I totally agree with #3.

  9. 9
    uwe hornung says:

Starkers was let down by Vandenberg’s angular acoustic playing – as gifted as he is as an electric lead guitarist, he was helpless on acoustic guitar. It would have probably sounded better had DC played the acoustic guitar himself.

    Or Mickey Moody.

  10. 10
    Ivica says:

    Déjà-vu

  11. 11
    Kenn says:

Hi This is what Coverdale should do 24Seven.

  12. 12
    max says:

@ Uwe Hornung: That is exactly what I’m thinking. Just compare STARKERS to DONNINGTON. DC has a great voice for stuff in the soul-blues-direction he had taken on his solo efforts. As for me, I love his singing with girlie backup singers and a littel brass very much. And an album produced by Rick Rubin could be a keeper. Even if it was all cover versions.

  13. 13
    Buttockss says:

@ 2 ” Starkers In Tokyo ” will be in blue ray version this go around, if you care!

  14. 14
    Jaffa says:

Rick Rubin and Coverdale…yep. I’d be there. Great idea. Phone Cov up and tell him.

Anyway…I will be buying this especially for all the demos.

  15. 15
    Scott W. says:

I’m wondering if all of the DVD footage is pro shot or just the starkers in Tokyo portion?

  16. 16
    Jörg says:

@15 Tokyo 1997 and New York 2008 are pro-shots, Stockholm 2006 is probably a low quality pro-shot, Warsaw 1997 and Cologne 2006 should be the circulating audience shots…

  17. 17
    Alan says:

Dog was one of four new tracks on Live… In the Shadow of the Blues.

  18. 18
    Scott W says:

    Thanks Jorg @16!

  19. 19
    Ernie says:

    @12 – DONINGTON not “DONNINGTON”.

Why can’t people seem to spell the name of this place properly?

Bands have been playing there for nearly 40 years with Blackmore kicking things off with Rainbow in 1980.

  20. 20
    GMan_1964 says:

Streaming this on Apple Music this morning. Just lovely.

  21. 21
    OMei says:

I especially like the “So Long” outtake. Isn’t that the oldwoody Guthrie standard? I only got it as download hence cannot check the song credits…
