Jon Lord is fighting cancer
Jon Lord has released this message today on JonLord.org:
I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travelers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure.
I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.

August 11th, 2011 at 12:32Was feeling upset about this today. Just about to buy the new Rises Over Japan dvd & it really won’t be the same seeing it now. His organ style sounded the best, much better than all guy’s that played in Rainbow & the guy from Gillan. The only other guy that sounded as good, was the original organ player in Santana Greg . So many times Jon saved the band from a really bad night. In the Come & or High Water he mention this. Also during the Bolin years, still can’t believe it.

August 12th, 2011 at 08:44I had the pleasure to meet Mr Lord a couple of time on the Whitesnake UK tour in 1982. One of them being as he was off to the restaurant for a pre gig meal. A true gentleman he took time out to chat for several minutes and did not rush me at all when I asked questions. He kindly signed my copy of the then current Saints & Sinners album.
Like many other comments I hope the cancer has been caught early and wish Jon a speedy recovery

I’m a huge admirer of you Jon, both as a keyboard player and as a musician. I play keys because of you – you were the member of Purple that I was most drawn to (maybe because I’d had classical (guitar) training myself. You gave me my love for that hulking great beast that people call a Hammond, but I’ve loved your ‘classical’ recordings too. “Sarabande” is still a favourite of mine.
I can only wish you well in these moments of trial, and look forward to seeing you on a stage again one day, or hearing a new recording. I’m sure your immense dignity will see you thru.

My memories of you go back to the photo session for Art Gallery – I held up one of the pieces of scenery for the back cover shot. Then the studio days and Zena’s Twigs (as Keef called them). I particularly recall the night you got stopped for driving the wrong way up a one-way street and talked yourself out of a ticket. That night you told me you were recruiting Glenn for Purple, knowing I wanted to make a solo album with him. And the Butterfly Ball at the Albert Hall. Then the ’75 Tommy Bolin tour. Ah, well. we had some good chats on that tour. I’ve always regarded you as a true gentleman. I hope very much you see off this impertinent disease and return to what you do best. Making music.

My Doctor gives me about six Months.so while I am still able to type, I want You to know that You have always been a HUGE influence on my life!(Yes, I own and Play a Hammond)I have also decided to forgo the usual rituals, and donate my Body to the Medical School,here in Nova Scotia,Canada! I hope that by doing this,perhaps it might help in a small way, to find a cure for this dreadful disease! I will be looking down on You from “Above” and cheering for You all the way!

Symphony for Group and Orchestra was a natural choice for me ( I was impressed with how you scored the horns!!! ), and thus my love of Deep Purple, and in particular your musical creativity, was taken to a higher level. I truly hope you win your battle with cancer, Jon. That would indeed be music to my ears.
As a footnote, I fulfilled a lifelong dream to see DP live a couple weeks ago in Moncton, NB, Canada, but even with Roger and the two Ians, it’s a pale copy of the original band with you and Ritchie.
