Lyon 1973
A recording of a Deep Purple performance in Lyon, France, on March 16, 1973 has been posted to YouTube. It is purported to be from an FM radio broadcast, but don’t get your hopes too too high. It sounds more like an audience recording, albeit a good one for the time.

August 26th, 2025 at 07:07If it is an audience tape (the crowd are quite loud during between tracks) it’s one of the best I’ve ever heard – especially for 1973 – and it’s better than the AM radio bootleg. Interestingly the edit in Highway Star is the same in both which does suggest that it’s an FM recording.
It does include Space Truckin’ – which was missing from the AM tape.

Another brilliant version of Space Truckin’ …and yet again, different to any other version !….no wonder they wrote about Space ….this band were on another planet to anything else out there …wow, you certainly got your moneys worth every night …thats what I call exciting ! …unlike today’s robotic shows …where they play exactly the same solos and arrangements every night !
I think in years to come , the classic mark 2 line up ( and even mark 3 ) …will be held up in music schools to show pupils the brilliance of their innovation and musicianship

August 27th, 2025 at 19:13They had a great night for sure. For me, Lazy stands out here. Although I prefer the sound of the versions they played in 1972, the performance, including the drum solo, is as good as it gets. In terms of speed, they have picked up considerably, but it’s still under control here and does not sound as exaggerated as, e.g., in the 80s and early 90s.
