Sweet child of the rubble era

Ian Gillan. Photo © 2005 Nick Soveiko.

German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine celebrates Ian Gillan’s 80th birthday in style, with a feature article.

With Deep Purple in the early 1970s, he shaped rock vocals like no other. His shrieking yet melodic “Child in Time” remains emblematic to this day. Ian Gillan is now turning eighty.

In his autobiography, Ian Gillan cites a questionnaire he filled out for fans of a BBC program in the late 1960s. When asked about his first professional performance, he answered “college dance at Twickenham,” and when asked about the biggest breakthrough in his career, he answered “none yet.”

Check it out in the original if you can read German, as for the rest of us linguistically challenged, there’s always Google Translate.

Happy birthday, Ian!

Thanks to Uwe for the heads-up and linguistic expertise.

I wonder if Ian finds it odd that he isn’t singing Smoke On The Water on tour this birthday ??
    Best wishes,Big Ian.

Eighty years of age, what is he going to do now? The mind boggles. Collapsing into a rocking chair and relaxing (a siesta) on the porch back at the ranch, pondering the fate of the universe and beyond? A crossword or three, a visit to Denmark perhaps? The endless hobbies big Ian can get stuck into to bide his time. Cheers.

So nice different newspapers around the world is acknowledging Ian for his great work and tremendous voice and personality.
Unfortunately I haven’t seen any newspaper in Denmark been doing the same, and for that I am very shameful and very sorry 😨

I will immediately take action on the matter, calling the minister in Denmark for beautiful rock music and make, perhaps, some almost serious threats!

Actually the only other Dane, Lars Ulrich, has been out praising MiJ 👏🏼👏🏼

    Karin Verndal says:

    @2

“what is he going to do now?”

    – well, he is more than welcome to visit us in Denmark, and stay here!
I will personally take excellent care of him!
Bring him coffee, massage his feet, and exchange jokes with him!

And – listen to his many many exciting stories 🤩

  9. 9
    Max says:

Looking up from my copy of SÜDDEUTSCHE, Uwe, I am not sure that I share your concept of satisfaction. But I won’t discuss with people that read only one paper anyway so I assumed you like to take a broader look at things. From taz to nius so to say.

Having read the FAZ article I have to wonder once again how the irony in the lyrics of Highway Star escapes so many people. And while there are no bad mistakes in that FAZ piece I guess the authors view on Ian’s lyrics leaves a lot to be discussed. I sure am biased – but I dare to say that Ian Gillan is one of the better lyricist in Rock’n’Roll. Plus: He got better and better with the years.

Karin, ain’t it time to realise that it is up to YOU to wave Ian’s flag in and all over Denmark. That is the task god has given you. As if healing people from all kinds of sickness and desease weren’t enough … but it’s not upon us to decide what we’re here for…

  10. 10
    Attila says:

@5, Uwe, you cheeky old bastard, your “Way” came at some cost to some of us… Otherwise, FAZ is a hell of a quality newspaper. But chitchat apart: long live Ian Gillan, all the best wishes to him.

@ 4 – “I will immediately take action on the matter, calling the minister in Denmark for beautiful rock music and make, perhaps, some almost serious threats!” I was getting really worried there Karin. What do you want me to do then?

I can go out in my garden and pick the great man a beautiful bouquet of flowers but before they reach him, wherever he lives these days, they will be withering I’m afraid.

Or I could sing him a song? Nooooo, I like him too much to put him in that kind of misery 😱

I’m no good at decorating, but I will certainly make myself a nice cup of coffee and think of him while I drink it. Will that be sufficient for my German Neighbour?

Well, Max, you are indeed right here!
This is my life-task, I see that now, besides healing all kinds of people with all kinds of illnesses, but how do I take this – well – apparently God-given task upon me?

I can tell you what I already do, and please give me help and instructions:

    1) I play the beautiful music of Ian’s very loudly! Not only Purple, but also Gillan and his solo-work 😍 and I make sure all windows and doors are open so my neighbours really can enjoy everything 😃

    2) I sing very loudly when I play this music – ok already here I see I make a very big mistake…. I can mime to the music, but I might not let people hear my voice? 🫣 (of course you don’t know my voice, but I have been told that this one sounds a lot like me, but without the lyrical input):

    https://youtu.be/pWlM790UJLk?si=rpN6mLsoaxfV1j_y

    3) I praise Ian and Purple every single chance I get 😃

    4) I put his work on display in my home! When I take my valuables away from my safe, I place them on a shelf, well lit-up, and with flower arrangement around it 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

    Can I do more?

Ought I write a book about him?
Write a fairytale about him? You don’t know me but I love to write, and have been written fairytales before. After all, I do live in the same country as the famous H.C.Andersen 😃

I have thought about getting a tattoo with his face and name, but I don’t know where to place it 🤔

And René prefers Metallica, do I need to elaborate further?

  30. 30
    Uwe Hornung says:

Attila, I didn’t view it as an offense at all, it was a humorous counter to something I had deadpanned. Damn right those German lessons would have come at a high price.

Very little is sacred to me, so I crack jokes about Germany’s fall from civilization too. I just occasionally include subtitles so I’m not misunderstood by the wrong people or to rule out any doubt by the right ones.

You can’t escape those 12 years in our national conscience and that is a good thing. It needs to be remembered.

  31. 31

Herr MacGregor, I would not dare comment – outside of fringe groups such as pirates, carnies and convicts, I’m no great fan of male or female tattoos …

    https://youtu.be/0X1JgiFf9As

Besides Ian’s face and name would be a bit overt as a tattoo, wouldn’t it? I’d prefer something with a lighter touch, a symbolic ping-pong ball perhaps? That would likely also deal with the search for a proper location one would think.

  32. 32
    MacGregor says:

@ 27- yes the IGB version of CIT is rather good. It needed something different I feel, maybe it is just me. I don’t listen to the original anymore, haven’t for many decades and I heard it too much back in the day and yes we were very fortunate to witness it performed live in 1984. Let’s face it, it isn’t a standard rock song. It always has that epic vibe to it and therefore belongs in that time. We know why, because of the vocal performance and especially the falsetto bits. I will never ever listen to anyone else attempting that, it is untouchable without Ian Gillan singing it. (I hope I am not sounding too Karin- ish here, he he he). History never repeats. In Rock indeed, cast into stone for all eternity. Cheers.

  33. 33
    Karin Verndal says:

    Fla76 – really? Do I need to? I mean… really??

It’s not that I haven’t listened to the guy, but I do not have that much time to dwell into/investigate/use my magnifying glass – you got the picture I guess 😊

  35. 35
    Karin Verndal says:

    @20

    “who is the better singer”

    – well Ivica, I have a very good suggestion!
    😅

It’s not that I don’t appreciate other singers, not at all!
But in my mind no one in the whole wide world comes anywhere near Ian.

Robert Plant certainly has something going on, his appearance is very much in your face (I mean: women’s faces) but as a singer he is mediocre compared to the guy from Purple.

    But hey that’s just me.
I’m sure a lot of the good people in here will crucify me and tell me how wrong I am.

But to make sure no one misunderstood my sentences:

Ian Gillan is the nr 1 singer in the world
    😁

  36. 36
    Uwe Hornung says:

“I may have made him appear in a very positive light 🤔“

But that’s your job, Karin, revere your husband and be eternally grateful!

Liking Metallica is perfectly fine, more musical than Twisted Sister. I just didn’t know that René was that much younger than you, but if it works for Brigitte & Emmanuel … 😇

    https://youtu.be/5mz3TkxJhPc

  37. 37
    Uwe Hornung says:

Depending on how you view it, the fast shuffle middle part of CIT sacrificing any harmonic change is either a very standard late 60s/70s jammy arrangement idea (did anybody just say Iron Butterfly or Steppenwolf? 😎) or – takes deep breath, well aware of the sanctity of the moment – an artful representation of the turmoils of armed conflict in this anti-war song.

Ok, someone had to say it. 😱 I can see the pulled daggers gleaming already, the time has come, Uwe must be undone by the morning …

I liked with the IGB version that they dared to sacrifice the telltale Jon Lord organ intro (which beautiful as it is, as we all know, is the part of the song most ripped off from It’s A Beautiful Day’s original melody) and immersed the composition in a “Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-meets-Santana’s-Abraxas “-psychedelic surround sound. That was pretty nifty with a classic like that.

At the time, I was surprised that the Glover-produced IGB debut (a lot more digestible than the more ambitious Clear Air Turbulence which followed it) didn’t do better (it was still IGB’s bestselling record probably due to its comeback nature), I could hear parallels on that album to WDWTWA’s more experimental tracks such as Our Lady, Super Trooper, Rat Bat Blue and Place In Line. But perhaps by then, people had grown accustomed to the Mk III bluesy stadium rock sound which they found better echoed on Blackmore’s Rainbow debut or with Whitesnake a few years later. Ian fell a little through the cracks with the IGB debut.

I believe an Atmos mix of IGB’s studio version of CIT would just blow people’s minds. Where are the tapes? Overall, the three IGB studio releases are an audiophile rock fan’s wet dream, much due to Mark Nauseef’s percussive soundscapes.

Then one day, at the end of a lesson on homeopathic effects on anatomy, Ms Verndal moves alluringly with animal grace towards young René, pointing to the T-shirt spanning over his muscular frame: “So you like Metallica I see, good taste! I like to go a little wild too … Have you heard of Deep Purple, the band Lars likes so much? I have a few of their records at home, we could listen to them together some time over a cup of coffee – you are old enough to enjoy a cup of coffee, aren’t you, René, mine is said to be of very good quality, instant gratification, I’m sure we won’t take long …”.

@ 37 – Very hard to come by those three IGB cd’s. Just where are those original masters of the three studio albums. Tied up in some record company warehouse, or worse, dumped into skip rubbish bin many years ago. We can hope they may turn up somewhere and somehow they end up being remixed, re-released etc. Do you have them on cd Uwe. I know that is a question that probably shouldn’t be asked, with your vast music collection, no doubt you will have them. Cheers.

  44. 44
    Ivica says:

    @ 35 Charming Ladies Karin
Yes, I think Ian was a more talented singer than Robert and a better songwriter. I think also Robert had better logistical support ,business relationship with yours guitarist and a better manager , Robert had more continuity, as did the band.
A big mistake was made in 1973. …..It’s not worth crying over spilt milk.

  45. 45
    Max says:

    @ 37

I ain’t an audiophile, due to lack of finesse and even more so lack of proper hearing capacities Uwe – but I always wondered why IGB’s CiT sounds so muffled. While I certainly agree that CAT is a masterpiece in any aspect and Scarabus sounds pretty good (but is not as adventorous and outstanding as CAT) I find CiT hard to listen to. Like there is a layer of mud on it. Some of the songs – if way more naiive than CAT – appeal to me but not the sound. I did think it might have been my copy … but when I bought the cd many years later that was no approval at all. So it’s my least played IG record next to Future Shock that could have used a bit of the lower sounds that are all over CiT.
BTW: IGB Live at Budokan is a testament to the class of that band and for me one classic live album that never got enough praise. Could hav done without SOTW though.

You are indeed right, of course.

But honestly, I’ve never thought much of Robert Plant.
I remember from my school, so many of the girls were fainting because of him (and Sting, George Michael, Prince, Michael Jackson etc) on a daily basis, and I was all confused.
When I now and then said: ‘well ok, but take a listen (a listen, not a look – even though Ian was a – ahem – very noble youngster – but to me what he sounded like was so much more important than his very good looks) they were completely indifferent to Purple and Ian.
    What a disappointment ☺️

I guess it speaks for itself that 55 years later, Purple is still the most important band (at least for me) but who really remembers Wham, Police etc?

Fla76, with all due respect for your undeniable matchmaker/marriage broker talents, while I know that Karin has been conspicuously eyeing Ian Gillan as a healthy and wealthy widower with natural charm for quite some time, JoeLT seems to be in secure hands for now:

    😂😄😁

    Uwe!
At one point I’m a ferocious cougar hunting for innocent and ill adjusted schoolboys, then suddenly I’m hunting down Ian because he is a healthy and wealthy widower, and now you try adding JLT to my repertoire 🤣
(Btw: I would never dare to meddle with the former KGB!) (FSB I don’t even have the nerve to mention….👀)

Ohhhh man you would be so disappointed if you really knew me!
    I am soooo boring 😄
Think about it: I’m here, with my iPad at a Friday night (11 PM) and a cup of tea (yeah because I do need to sleep…) with nothing better to do than write in here!

Don’t get me wrong, I feel privileged beyond belief to be allowed in here with all you very fine intellectuals, but maybe it’s not the most exciting a woman can do if just 1/10 of what you wrote should be true 😁😁😁

Well, as I usually do, I forgive, forget and shake my head slowly in disbelief of how a prominent lawyer as yourself can get so confused 😄😄

Max, “layer of mud” over CAT, wot says you? I’m kinda at a loss how to reply, I have the album in multiple formats and editions, even the worst ones sound ok to good.

I assume you are aware of the original Rockfield mix which Ian didn’t like for miraculous reasons and had remixed (the outcome being not that much different, a bit less instrumental brawn, the overall sound is smoothed over, more bass frequencies on Rockfield too), that has last been re-released as “Before The Turbulence” and sounds fine:

If you want a very good version of the Ian Gillan mix as officially released by Island at the time, then try this pricey Japanese goody here:

    Uwe Hornung says:

PS: I actually think that the productions of all three IGB studio albums and of course of the indeed underrated Live album too have held up quite well – better than some Rainbow, GILLAN or Whitesnake recordings. My pet theory for that is that the majority of the IGB musicians were experienced session cracks who had played on countless recordings, so they were relaxed in the studio and knew how to make themselves get recorded well and sound good.

I know the IGB version of SOTW was a bit OTT in its funkifi- & jazzification, but I think it’s a real hoot! Brings a smile to my face every time I hear it, the drumming is fantastico!

I guess we established the fact long time ago that I’m a little old lady with support hoses, way too many cats, talking to myself and drink my lukewarm coffee while I rest under a blanket watching re-runs of ‘Midsomer Murder’ or ‘Bergerac’ or anything with that nice John Nettles…

It seems Uwe’s penchant for elder hard rock vocalists lowering their tone into a more ‘baritone’ and ‘old fella’ style is possibly gaining some momentum. Don’t go all gooey Uwe, it is only uncle Rob. Cheers.

Then big Ian can do a (insert drum roll here) ………………………………………………………………………………………………yes that’s right , little Anton’s favourite crooners biggest hits volume one. With Anton pictured on the cover being held by Ian while Ian sings ‘love me tender, love me true’ etc etc. Should be a good seller too I would imagine. Stay tuned folks, another exciting adventure awaits us all. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Karin doesn’t even realise Anton isn’t at home. She would never believe Anton or anyone else anyway, if told of that shopping centre appearance by Ian signing records, cd,s and giving an impromptu vocal performance of a song or two. Cheers.

“Karin doesn’t even realise Anton isn’t at home.”
    – well, I’ll tell ya that Anton walks around me, sits next to me and lies at my feet ALL the time! So if he was missing, I would definitely know 😄

“shopping centre appearance by Ian signing records”
    – shopping centre? That sounds very romantic!
Couldn’t he be singing in the forest nearby my home?

“Shattered” is the word. Just like one should always be careful in the choice of words when, say, describing the biological age of a woman, your post should have warranted greater attention from me!

You’re so right, unlike CAT, the CD transfer of CIT (IGB’s debut album with Polydor/Oyster at the time) lacked quality, it indeed sounded dull and had a Grauschleier, but I don’t think it came from the original production, I do not remember the original vinyl sounding like that. That sounded like one of your typical Roger Glover production jobs of the 70s (Nazareth, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Status Quo, MSG) and those always tended to sound on the bright side, not dark and dull.

I have no idea what the quality of the source material for the CD transfer was which took place already in 1989 when analogue to digital transfers were still fledgling. The Edsel remaster from 2007 sounded a bit better, but still not great. I even have a Japanese CD pressing of CIT and while that sounds relatively best of all, it’s still not a great remaster. I think it is a tape accessibility thing.

Overall, remaster attempts with this album have been infrequent, I have a hunch that is not only due to the messy rights situation (unlike CAT and Scarabus this was never an Island release and procured by Virgin only in the aftermath), but also no good final mix (much less the original masters) can be found.

Forgive me bitte for having unjustly doubted your words (and even general sanity)! 😈

    ………………………………………………………………………

I read about the “Auntie Roberta does Tony”! And why not? Most people have no idea that Rob’s true baritone, when unmarred by the “Judas Priest mode” he can switch on and off at will, actually resembles a young Neil Diamond’s tone:

  66. 66
    MacGregor says:

@ 65 – I do think Rob’s vocal would suit old Tony’s song’s or his cover songs. Just like I think big Ian’s would suit “you know who’s”. I am not game to mention his name anymore, just in case the lady from the north is watching, waiting and ready to pounce. I certainly will give Rob’s album a listen to, respect where respect is due. I await big Ian’s foray into that elder statesman’s vocal paradise land of mesmerising voice and all. That sounds a little over the top, but I have to try and convince Karin that it would be a moment of splendour for her, an uplifting spiritual experience. Would she purchase the album though and then admit to that here in these hallowed halls? Stranger things have happened in this world. Thanks for that information regarding the ‘quality’ of the IGB cd’s. Interesting to know that. Cheers
