Lyon 1973

A recording of a Deep Purple performance in Lyon, France, on March 16, 1973 has been posted to YouTube. It is purported to be from an FM radio broadcast, but don’t get your hopes too too high. It sounds more like an audience recording, albeit a good one for the time.

Thanks to RIJIR for posting this and to Gary Poronovich for bringing it to your attention.

Ian Gillan doing a terrific Elvis impression toward the end of Mary Long. Wonderful.

Isn’t this the live version of Mary Long that was linked here recently. Nice to hear that song live, a rarity indeed. Also Jon Lord dabbling into a few classics at the start of Lazy. Cheers.

Does anyone of you out here know anything about the band’s 2026 touring plans? (Besides what we all know that they’re booked)

The official DP facebook site has posted about this many times recently and is constantly asking fans if they should release it…

If it is an audience tape (the crowd are quite loud during between tracks) it’s one of the best I’ve ever heard – especially for 1973 – and it’s better than the AM radio bootleg. Interestingly the edit in Highway Star is the same in both which does suggest that it’s an FM recording.

It does include Space Truckin’ – which was missing from the AM tape.

    Robert says:

This is special because quality is way better than other bootleg releases from this show AND this time it contains Space Truckin’ for the first time

    What a question – SURE!

It does sound better than the off air tapes from back then.
Are those cuts in the source material?

Another brilliant version of Space Truckin’ …and yet again, different to any other version !….no wonder they wrote about Space ….this band were on another planet to anything else out there …wow, you certainly got your moneys worth every night …thats what I call exciting ! …unlike today’s robotic shows …where they play exactly the same solos and arrangements every night !

I think in years to come , the classic mark 2 line up ( and even mark 3 ) …will be held up in music schools to show pupils the brilliance of their innovation and musicianship

The drum solo in Lazy just might be one of Paice’s longest at 8 min. in length.

    DerGerd says:

very good, Mary Long – the vocals and the drums are “superb” 🙂 i found always, that the drums and the vocals were the most important factors of the original DP-feeling

    DerGerd says:

…and Blackmore is unbelievable at the beginning of Lazy at this concert…

    David Black says:

@15. Totally agree. The whole of lazy is a rather awesome 19 minutes

    Leslie Hedger says:

I agree 100% Steve!! Money’s worth it was with MKII and even MKIII. If I want to hear note for note, I just put the studio album on!!. To heck with going to the concert!

They had a great night for sure. For me, Lazy stands out here. Although I prefer the sound of the versions they played in 1972, the performance, including the drum solo, is as good as it gets. In terms of speed, they have picked up considerably, but it’s still under control here and does not sound as exaggerated as, e.g., in the 80s and early 90s.
