Even distribution of awesomeness
We’ll leave you on this warm summer night with a video of a vocal coach commenting on Doing Their Thing performance of Child in Time (which is very à propos for the birthday boy):
Thanks to our editor emeritus Trond for the heads-up.
A decent version, but far from the best rendition Gillan & The Purple Gang have done of that ditty.
August 20th, 2025 at 02:32Great analysis. When I listened to this song all these years ago I had no idea of all the intricacies of the song, I just liked what I heard! Still do. This is an excellent live version.
August 20th, 2025 at 04:28‘Even distribution of awesomeness’ 😃
‘Ear-candyness’ 😄
‘True musicians, real real ones’ 😁
Nice to know why Ian put one finger in his ear, have always wondered about that.
And she is actually wrinkling her nose a little bit 😉
She looks exactly how I feel when I hear CiT
Thanks admin for posting this vocal coach in here 😊
August 20th, 2025 at 05:51Elizabeth will wrinkle her nose at this unwarranted intrusion of an impostoress!
The number of wimmin who profess to have never heard Child In Time before keeps on growing exponentially – Stranger Things to the rescue!

Much like claims of virginity (or the loss thereof due to “sports activities”), this needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
August 20th, 2025 at 06:28It’s the best Gillan performance of the song by Gillan as far as I know and overally the best short version if someone ever found the rest of the songs it would be DP holy grail as they were performed one of the kind playing what can be heard, taking into account weird circumstances it’s imho better than made in japan….
August 20th, 2025 at 07:11“Nice to know why Ian put one finger in his ear, have always wondered about that.”
In the days of yore when stage (and much less in-ear) monitoring was nonexistent or still in its infancy, a lot of singers would do that to hear themselves better and pitch more accurately. Mariah Carey did it all the time to tune her trademark “whistle tones” for which she was – depending on your point of view – either loved or hated.

August 20th, 2025 at 07:34Happy 80 years Mr. Gillian Birthday.
August 20th, 2025 at 12:39Flash thought: I think Mariah could have done the screaming parts of Child In Time exceedingly well – and then some! 😂

“a lot of singers would do that to hear themselves better and pitch more accurately.”
– it’s not ‘dead-or-alive’ necessary to know this, but it is very nice to know 😊
I can’t remember who, but a very prominent and important member of these halls of sanity, once explained very carefully that this gesture Ian is doing here:
https://youtu.be/F7ZF2xaNhyw?si=x5hAMtA7GrXV26Zs
(Exactly 2:27) meant something special, but I can’t remember what it was – so sorry 🥺😞😖 but it was an important gesture he made to some roadie I believe it was.
I collect these little pieces of information, and one day I might write a book with the exciting title:
August 20th, 2025 at 16:56“Things you never knew was important to know, picked up after a fulfilling and pleasant life in The Highway Star”
😄😁
It’s nice that all these singing teachers listen to Child in Time with a series of “Wow”s or “Oh my God”s with very grotesque facial expressions, very American expressions to look cool, when a student recommends it to them or when they realize their musical ignorance in the rock field.
Afterwards it seems like a new world opens up to him like a child.
Anyway, a vocal coach a few years ago had done a nice analysis of BigIan’s vocals, but I can’t find her YouTube channel anymore (she’s not the most famous one, the vocal coach with the red hair who was the first several years ago)
August 20th, 2025 at 17:31#6 Uwe:
August 20th, 2025 at 19:21That’s right, there’s nothing special about covering your ear to better hear your own voice when you sing in a place where the listening room doesn’t let you hear anything (and in the 70s everything was wilder and musicians turned up the volume without any mercy for their singers)
@9
He’s telling the sound guy that he can’t hear anything through the monitor, to turn it up. Same thing Joey is doing here @1:15 1:26 & 3:14
August 20th, 2025 at 20:14@ 10 – it is ALL about attention seeking, that dreaded camera appearance, again………….Look at me, I am feigning being shocked or surprised while sadly attempting to be somebody, somewhere, anywhere it does’t matter. Just get online and be seen and heard, someone somewhere surely will take notice. What their response will be, well I had better leave that to someone else………………………
August 20th, 2025 at 21:36Karin @9: Coming here, you irrevocably traded your innocence for insight. Knowledge is the enemy of all faith.

I can’t remember what it was – so sorry 🥺😞😖 but it was an important gesture he made to some roadie I believe it was.
It is the universal stage hand sign for I can’t hear myself very well up here, turn me up louder!

“Flash thought: I think Mariah could have done the screaming parts of Child In Time exceedingly well – and then some! “
– (scratching my head so violently that Anton wonder if I’ve got a flea…)
Are you kidding me?
You are just being hilariously funny, right 😳😳😳
I’ve deep sympathy for any woman who put herself out there for public display! Even ms Swift I have a lot of felling sorry for, but MC, no no no no and no 🙉
August 21st, 2025 at 05:20@12 & 14
Thank you 🙏🏼
Now you mention it, I do remember this was the explanation.
If I only could remember who said it…
Uwe, ahem, are there perhaps other universal hand signs I need to know about? ☺️
August 21st, 2025 at 05:55Everyone jokes about Mariah, but I haven’t met a youngish female singer in heavy metal, rock or pop in the last decades that has denied her lasting influence on modern female vocal styles. Even with indie singers like Alanis Morissette, who have themselves influenced generations of female vocalists, her influence is obvious. She made a singing style incorporating the whistle register (which is even higher than falsetto) popular and she mastered it well. And her stuff is impossible to sing due to the range(s) she covers in one song. There’s more than impossibly tight dresses and cleavage to Ms Carey.
I was being perfectly serious. If DP reinstated CIT in their set, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if two young Mariahs did the high parts rather than ole Ian. That song is a piece of music, not an athletic endurance test for aging male vocal cords. Ian let it become an albatross around his neck, it needn’t be that at all.

RE: Mariah Carey 🤮 🤮 🤮 I’ve got a pretty strong stomach, but that’s going a little too far.
August 21st, 2025 at 07:45She was technically an awesome singer – any female singer will tell you that. Before her solo career rocketed, she wasn’t a much sought after studio and background live singer for nothing.
I’m not talking about her diva antics, we don’t judge Ritchie by his either.
August 21st, 2025 at 19:21“Uwe, ahem, are there perhaps other universal hand signs I need to know about?”
Start with this for now …

Further homework will follow in due course.
August 21st, 2025 at 20:42@17
It’s not that she can’t sing and carry a tune, not at all. I mean ‘all I want for x-mas’ is cute 😆(almost as cute as ‘Last x-mas’ with what’s-their-name 😁)
Sorry, no joking now:
It’s fine the way she sings Uwe, and I’m sure you’re right when you postulate her grande influence BUT – please don’t ever suggest that she could do anything else but seriously and dangerously harm to the masterpiece that is CiT!
This guy:
https://youtu.be/dnU25je3Ebw?si=Nh8o6QIHF_kCQjwU
Isn’t bad at all! Not at all, but he is not Ian….
And I cannot explain what is lacking, beside the personality behind Ian’s CiT.
Even though this guy here is formidable, to me it feels like a job well done, but nothing but a job, whereas when Ian sang it as a young man, it felt exactly like he was singing with the blood of his heart at stake 😍 Ian is melodramatic – the very very VERY good way, the ‘tears-are-running-down-my-cheeks-and-keep-running’-way, and no it’s not because I know it’s Ian, it was the exact same thing when I heard Ian sing this amazing song the first time. I will never forget it…
And this:
https://youtu.be/GkDY7Ip7muI?si=tQ_mRUuli5uoUXS3
Had I never heard Ian and Purple do this song, I would not have turned this off either. But because I know it from Purple and Ian, I was a bit intrigued to listen closely to this one. I appreciate these girls, I really do. But every time I hear other people than Ian sing this, I die a little bit inside 😖😢
Not because it is women, but because, again, it’s a performance, whereas Ian sang with his heart blood in every single breath.
I guess this girl can sing well – but CiT is Ian’s song ☺️
Let’s hear the genius himself:
https://youtu.be/2tsUn2UreZc?si=ieDAtz_bNppRTBF9
Ohhhhhhh man 😃😍
Purple and Ian, no one can ever move to these heights, not only musically but emotionally and with such intensity 💜
And even though I can hear his voice problems, or maybe because of these issues, I am in awe of the man!
He makes my heart and soul melt, little drops flowing away!
Had I never heard Ian singing this, I wouldn’t have thought so much about it. But now: I can never forget this, and will not either.
A person is blessed when music and songs become a part of the dna, of the part that defines you!
It’s not a theme-song I’m thinking about! But songs – music can transform and change us. Carry us through the storms in life, and add sunshine and rainbows to the lovely parts 🥰
And only true charismatic singers like Ian can do this.
He made the first print in my heart, all other singers are make-believers, copies.
They can be ok, but there is only one Ian!
And no, he is not able to sing like that anymore, I know that. But luckily we have recordings 😍
It’s like this song:
August 21st, 2025 at 21:03https://youtu.be/01-2-7_IRFA?si=4RmnLs4rFw-V36jE
It means so much to me, when the first notes are playing, I’m instantly back in time, to the first time I heard it, just like a beautiful scent can bring back memories, so can wonderful music and voices.
@ 18- you are not wrong there Russ. Although we all are aware that Uwe has a penchant for scantly clad women who wail and holler all over the place, he he he. It must be that ‘orgasmic’ thing. Ho hum Uwe, such is life eh? Cheers.
August 21st, 2025 at 21:36@ 17 – “I was being perfectly serious. If DP reinstated CIT in their set, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if two young Mariahs did the high parts rather than ole Ian.” Of course you wouldn’t Uwe, you would bat two eyelids, that makes more sense. I have this vision in my head of Uwe’s eyelids ‘batting’ at a really fast rate for some reason. I might be wrong though. Keep the wonder lady comments coming, we cannot resist. Oh and the other wonder girl too, might as well make it a twosome of sorts. Cheers.

“Scantily clad women”, I cannot even remotely fathom where the criticism might lie in that!
