BBC tribute to Jon

BBC Radio 4 will play a tribute to Jon Lord in this week’s Last Word which will air on Friday, July 20 at 16:00 local time. The show will be available as a podcast afterwards. Geoff Barton will be on the air and Classic Rock alludes that they’ve managed to secure a rare interview with Ritchie Blackmore as well.

Thanks to Kevin Dixon for the info.

Not sure the source is the most desirable around, as they ripped them thru the 80s at their former mag. Although they were all glad to have someone cover them, I’m sure they weren’t often pleased with the results, in fact I’m positive. But whatever, managing to secure an interview with Ritchie tells me he might maintain a certain affection for such gripers. Not sure how the world works anymore when it boils down to this, but someone has to do this, and do it right, so it’s a case who who makes it to that pole position I guess. Just please keep the insult jive out of it and edit it with much more effort that the magazine finals tend to be. Have some class for once, JB.

    This is most appropriate!

I’ve been trying to contact the producer to emphasize the significance of Jon Lord’s contribution to so many generations – some of whom regularly listen to Radio 4 (Myself included).

I seriously think, that as time goes on, Jon’s value as a musician will be increasingly realised along with a comparable sense of loss!

Jon’s contribution to humanity (Passion, Dignity, Humour, Good Taste & well aimed Wit) is on a par with the above.

Can’t stop playing the Organ solo on ‘No No No’ a Master class in improvisation = building tension, Instrument Tone & achieving Intensity in both single notation & chordal structure – GENIUS!!!

Jon Lord – Where Music spoke volumes, words now fail.

This is not a ‘special broadcast remembering Jon Lord’ as RB’s team’s online postings would suggest (already talked up by some to a one-hour show) but a regular weekly radio show that reflects on the lives of four or five people who have recently left us. It’s a quality show, I listen to it every week. Just under half an hour long, Jon will likely be featured for slightly over five minutes. Credit to the Beeb that they have got Ritchie involved.
Paris 1985 is on TV tonight, Friday (Saturday 02:55-04:43 CET), in a change to ARD’s Das Erste schedule: http://programm.daserste.de/pages/programm/detail.aspx?id=2992F7DEE4E6D918153127C8E7D053CF and on WDR on Sunday 29 July (Monday 01:15).

I first thought it would be on FM only, which appearantly suggests : NOT Internet?

But right now I can listen by, you’ve guessed it, through the purpelish(…)button : BBC 4 extra : LISTEN.

So maybe we can listen LIVE still?

    Nigel says:

“Matthew Bannister on the ITN newsreader and journalist Sir Alastair Burnet, who presented News At Ten over nearly twenty five years
Jon Lord – keyboard player with Deep Purple. We have tributes from the band’s guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and from Rick Wakeman
Yaakov Meidad – a Mossad agent involved in the kidnapping of the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann and the murder of the so called Butcher of Riga, Herberts Cukurs.
And Mike Westmacott the mountaineer who played a crucial role in the first ascent of Everest in 1953.”

It did not last 10 minutes!!!!

    Daniel Miller says:

Clearly we would all like an entire evening dedicated to his wonderful music and career but, within the format of “Last Words”, I think Radio 4 did a good job. It was heartwarming to hear Ritchie speak so eloquently and positively about Jon. I’m sure all Jon’s former band members are reflecting on their time with Jon and how their lives changed as a result. Whatever sadness we fans may feel at Jon’s death pales into insignificance when one considered the terrible grief that his family and friends must be feeling at this time. I hope that the outpouring of love and respect from fans and fellow musicians following Jon’s death eases their pain a little.

Listened to the podcast. Lovely to hear Ritchie’s fond remembrances of his old friend & colleague. He spoke with a lot of respect and affection.

A bit eerie to hear Jon speaking of how he’d like to be remembered, so soon after his passing.

And sad to think how cool a full-length collaboration with Rick Wakeman might have been, since it is no longer possible.

    Thanx Nigel

Pity though that I read your post today.
I ve been checking THS all day long on friday so I can’t have missed it!

This is 1 of the major side effects of moderating : Important news gets posted too late.

I am not exactly fond of Paris 1985, it must have been something like : cheap because it’s German TV ownership?
    They had better done 1993.

I ll relisten the short broadcast today.
At first I did quite recognise Ritchie’s voice and after a while I asked myself : Who is this?

Are they letting Geoff Barton quote Ritchie or…?

    Hey Guys,

Just to put things into perspective – Several times ‘Last Word’ has only given 3 minutes to remember an individual – I think the time spent on Jon was indicative of the Esteemed Respect felt for Mr Lord.

I mailed the producers to thank them for their tasteful ‘Farewell’.
