WHAT A CONCERT! The band came on and went straight into Fireball - don't know how they do that lift sound but they managed to get it just right - what a start! I have got to say that this is the best concert I have been to in a long time. The band sound as if they have been playing together for ages - Steve Morse has slotted in very nicely - I dont think Blackmore will be missed too much. Steve and Jon seem very happy playing together and did quite a few "duels" throughout the show.

The sound was excellent, the band seem to have so much energy and are obviously very happy playing together. Ian was in excellent form vocally, perhaps with not the range of old (Sometimes I feel like Screaming being the exception!), however, I think he more than makes up for this in the character of his voice. He was his usual jokey self starting the intro to most songs with "Imagine you are in a bar..." (not difficult!). The only dissapointment for me was that the Aviator wasn't in the set - still that was more than compensated for by the older material which is not usually performed live. The track list (not in order apart for the encores) was:

• HIGHWAY STAR

As if the standard of the main set wasn't enough the encores were absolutely barnstorming. Highway Star was absolutely incredible. This band knows what playing rock music is all about - energy. The solo spots from both Steve and Jon were superb - Steve's playing is so clear and precise - he is a definite asset to the band. Roger Glover got in the act with an excellent bass solo. What can you say about Ian Paice - except that he has got to be one of the best rock drummers in the business - I dont know where he gets all that energy from - what a sense of rhythm he has!

On the strength of this performance and the songs on Purpendicular I can't wait for the next album. If anyone has a tape of this performance or any other from the tour I would be extremely interested. Well I hope that they don't become so big that they miss Bristol out next time.
