Scandinavian Nights

Live & Rare

Performed live in Sweden 1970 by:

  • Ritchie Blackmore guitar
  • Ian Gillan vocals
  • Roger Glover bass
  • Jon Lord keyboards
  • Ian Paice drums

Recorded live on 12th November 1970 at Konserthuset in Stockholm by Swedish National Radio for a radio show called Tonkraft. Tapes carefully re-mixed by Tom Leader at Angel Studios.

Album co-ordinated by Tony Edwards.

There are a few points worthy of pointing out with regard to this album: Firstly, the US CD was titled "Live and Rare", while the European vinyl and CD were both titled "Scandinavian Nights". Secondly, the European vinyl release contains a booklet with some b/w pictures of Deep Purple in action. This also appears as a sort of miniature booklet in the European CD release. Some of these pics are also found on the fold-out sheet accompanying the US CD. Thirdly, the European vinyl release has a piece of text authored by Simon Robinson printed on the sleeve. The entire text is reproduced on the fold-out sheet accompanying the US CD. The European CD release, on the other hand, contains nothing of this text. Fourthly, the set of timings printed on the sleeve of the European releases (both vinyl and CD) refer to the length of the actual songs, that is, in-between chit-chat and applause are not included. The timings as printed on the US CDs refer to the songs plus any in-between stuff. Thus there are three sets of timings above: (1) as printed on the European vinyl & CD sleeves, (2) as printed on the US CDs, and (3) the European CD times as clocked by my CD-player. Fifthly, the tracks have been slized differently on the European and US CD releases. The European CD release has Gillan's intros at the beginning of each track, while the US CD release has them stacked at the end of the previous tracks. Thus, for instance, Gillan's intro to "Child In Time" appears before "Child In Time" (where it should) on the European CDs, while the same intro appears at the end of "Into The Fire" on the US CDs. Confused? You won't be after this week's episode! :-) Oh yes, I nearly forgot, the tracks come in the wrong order as well!
