Deep Purple Classical Quotes

At the request of Trond, I am posting my list so far of Deep Purple/Rainbow/ etc. classical quotes. Those marked with an asterisk (*) have already appeared in either my original larger discography ROCKIN' THE CLASSICS AND CLASSICIZIN' THE ROCK (1985) or its first supplement (1991). The others I include in the second supplement (2000). To save space, I will not give full discographical details here, but my books do give that information. The list so far:

  • "Under the gun" PERFECT STRANGERS -- middle part has 7 measures of Elgar/Pomp and Circumstance, op. 39, no. 1, 2nd theme*
  • "River deep, mountain high" THE BOOK OF TALIESYN -- parts sound like R. Strauss/Also Sprach Zarathustra (especially in intro.)*
  • "Burn" BURN and various other compilations -- Bach in some solos?; main riff is derived from Gershwin's "Fascinatin' Rhythm"*
  • "Anthem" THE BOOK OF TALIESYN -- middle part with organ and string quartet written by Jon Lord and not based on a classical piece.
  • "Rat bat blue" WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE -- Jon Lord keyboard solo based on Bach/ Well-tempered clavier, book I, prelude 10
  • "Highway Star" live sometimes quotes Holst/The Planets, Jupiter & others
  • "Dead or alive" HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT -- keyboard solo quotes Bach/Goldberg Variations
  • "Wring that neck" DEEP PURPLE IN CONCERT, SCANDINAVIAN NIGHTS, POWERHOUSE, LIVE & RARE, UK version of CONCERTO FOR GROUP & ORCHESTRA (bonus track) -- quotes include Bach/Violin Partita no.3 in E Major, Gavotte en Rondeau and Grieg/Peer Gynt Suite no.1, mvt.1 (Morning Mood) and probably others
  • HUNGARY DAYS (bootleg album) quotes Monti/Czardas

  • 1984/85 tour concerts opened with Jon Lord version of Bach/Toccata and Fugue in D minor -- intro. on IN THE ABSENCE OF PINK - KNEBWORTH '85 (which also has a version of "Difficult to Cure" (Beethoven/9th Symphony & quote from Beethoven/Fur Elise)) and "Space truckin'" with classical quotes by Jon Lord
