The Highway Star

Deep Purple - We Salute You!

DEEP PURPLE-WE SALUTE YOU!

Cold Toronto night. The aircraft hangar/cattle auction facility, The Warehouse was jammed with denim clad Purple fans-at least 98.5 % male (give or take 1%), all there to pay homage to a group that always seemed to miss Toronto when on tour.

I felt like I was living my own personal "Wayne's World" fantasy - DEEP PURPLE - "EXCELLENT!" When this show was announced I thought it would either be a total Spinal Tapish cliche laugh or a great show from a great band. Whatever the result I would be entertained for an evening. Well, the latter held true, Deep Purple surpassed my expectations. Sour, jaded rock critics who call this band dinosaurs need to get their trendy selves to a live gig like this one and experience a truly great group.

This incarnation with Steve Morse on guitar has jelled and is vital and invigorating. This group of skilled musicians has an amazing chemistry and there seems to be a real genuine respect for each other within the group.

The Purple classics will always rock my world - cool transcending moments?

Some were the first notes of the show the distinctive organ that we all identify with Jon Lord and Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water, Speed King, Highway Star. The songs still sound fresh even better than on all those car 8-track machines way back when.

In closing; DEEP PURPLE - go see them. They are one of the greats. Don't forget to induct them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
