Tinley Park Show on 8-22-98

We traveled 8 hours from Omaha Nebraska to Tinley Park to see the my favorite band in the world. I was so nervous the night of the show my dear Shannon drive to the show from the Budgetel on Harlem and 183rd. At age 32 and a fan since 14 when I learned of the show in Chicago we decided it was now or never the see these guys. Here's what I remember;

    Dream Theater was ok, I have heard some their stuff and I have always like John Petrucci. ELP was good too I saw them with Jethro Tull about 3 years ago. I like Greg Lake and I think Carl Palmer is one of the finest drummers to ever live and his solo on Saturday night was proof of that. Keith Emerson is very talented but I sometimes get a bit tired of all the crazy keyboard pyrotechnics.

    Now to Deep Purple, they came out at about 9:20 and started with Ted the Mechanic. I was expecting Hush since that is what most people said they were opening with. They played SKOW, Bludsucker, WFT, Almost Human, Watching the Sky, Any Fule Kno That, Lazy, SOTW, POH, PS, Speed King, and encored with Highway Star. I may have missed a song or two but I believe that was the whole enchillada. Steve Morse is a freaking God!! He is so good IMHO and the whole crowd loved the show. Lots of dancing and jumping and all sorts of stuff. Ian Gillan looked and sounded very good. I noticed he took a couple of breaks but at 53 and still touring I say let him do as he likes. Both me and my fiancé loved the show and I bought a shirt, cap, and tour book.
