Beacon Theatre Show, 27 Nov 1996

I was sitting in B36 (second row from the front of the upper balcony) and here is my review:

What a night to travel to NYC, or should I say, PARK in NYC! But we made it in time to hear them open with HUSH! Steve Morse blew doors, but it didn't keep the Blackmore fans in the 3 seats next to me from walking out during Morse's solo, in which he quoted Whole Lotta Love and Voodoo Chile. I wasn't leaving. I'd waited too long to see them (last show i saw was w/ Guns & Neuroses & Aerosmith at Giants stadium) to let ANYTHING stop me. Songs included The MULE, SPEED KING, CASCADES, SMOKE (of course--Jon Lord's solo beforehand included New York, New York), WOMAN FROM TOKYO. Encores (3) included Perfect Strangers & Highway Star. The sound was a bit muddy but improved as the show went on (early on someone in the men's was heard to remark "they didn't fix the sound from last night"--i guess someone heard him!) But the energy level was very high. My personal impressions: 1) I've never heard a band who's been around as long as DP do such enthusiastic versions of their "old" tunes. 2) Ian Paice is the first drummer to really impress me! He & Glover are an excellent team. and 3) Ian Gillan's voice was like a dream come true to me (I am a bit biased toward him: his voice has been a part of my life since I was born, and I love it!) By the way, I was the young lady in the second balcony Ian told to "calm down up there! put yer clothes back on!" because the theatre had gotten so hot by the end of the night I was down to my white bikini top. I hope i don't have to wait so long to see them again...although the way they made me feel the other night will probably last a very GOOD long time!
