Not just yet

David Coverdale spoke to Metropolis Radio from Macedonia some time before the show in the country on November 25. Along with now familiar story of how The Purple Album came into being, he also explained that this was supposed to wrap up his career, but he felt so revitalized that he started writing new music:

I was 63 years old, and I’m going, ‘Man, how long do I have to do this? This would be a perfect closure for me — to finish as I started.’ But it’s just kind of… In essence, it’s re-energized me. I still write new music. We’ll be recording some new music next year. But it’s just revitalized me… re-renergized. That’s all I can say. So any ideas that I had six months ago of retiring… I was totally honest, when I was making interviews, that I thought, you know, ‘This is probably it.’ But I had an incredibly good time on this U.S. tour with my musicians. It was incredible. […] I have no desire to hang up my rock and roll sneakers just yet.

Thanks to Blabbermouth for the info.

Hmmm…..not so sure he should continue.
I have it on (very) good authority that he harbours more than a little resentment at Purple’s longevity and continued success. Perhaps that’s his reason.

I can’t figure out why Jon would want to do MKIII and IV stuff with David, Glen and Ritchie. The story David tells over and over about Jon calling him makes no sense. By all accounts when Ritchie left Purple in 93 there was a lot of tension. Why would he want that? Why piss off Deep Purple and management since he retired with such class? Besides, he’s said many times that Ian Gillan is the voice of Purple. Why on earth would Jon Lord want to work with Glen Hughes? Beyond his antics, which is a lot, Jon took and then married (remained married) Hughes’ girlfriend….how awkward would that be? The part about Ritchie wanting Roger on base. I understand why Ritchie won’t work with Hughes but who in their right mind would think Glover would leave Purple to do a short term MKIII reunion which surely would piss of Ian Gillan. Makes no sense since Roger was not in MKIII. I’m sure there is something to the story….more likely Hughes trying to put it together with Jon’s agent being polite.

I saw Whitesnake and Purple days apart this summer in NEW YORK. Both put on great shows. With no bias as I love Whitesnake and have been a fan since day 1, Purple were a serious cut above. Gillan has more voice left as well. Dave was better than I expected but a lot of effects were used. DC was good but IG’s voice was more clear and less processed. I can’t see Ritchie Blackmore wanting to tour with a vocalist whose best days were a long time ago.

    That’s my personal opinion:
Don’t retire, but retire from Heavy Rock. Sing something which is in favour of your voice. You have tons of songs which you can sing in a more warm way, slow bluesy, sing along style. Don’t try to scream like Robert Plant.
Being the good old bluesy David, which we love in songs like “Ain’t Gonna Cry No More”, “Time And Again”, “Soldier Of Fortune”. No one is able to sing these songs like you did and still can do. And there are a lot of more heavy Whitesnake songs of all these decades, which would sound great as mellow blues tunes.

@ 2 and that is only your assumption. He is a classy man and he always been modest and appreciative to his teachers,Lord and Blackmore.Gillan is much more than that, and grew up to be a bitter old man every each passing year.very negative to say the least,as much as i love him.

I agree with Karl-Heinz. DC don’t need to retire, but he has to stop doing this hard or heavy rock stuff, overproduced and overcompressed, mixed for FM radio like in the 80s. He’s wasting his time, his money and his voice (and, to some extent, the WS legacy). Why not doing some blues rock or soul or r’n’b music, like his 3 solo albums, even some acoustic stuff, that would be so great, with simple, but high quality production? That’s what I want from DC for years. And that’s the kind of record that would remind the rest of the world how a great and versatile singer he is. Why not working with a producer that would get the best out of him and bring him out of his 80s hair metal comfort zone and bring him in 2016, yet with an immortal sound, someone like Dan Auerbach or Jack White? That would be awesome…

Great news he’s not retiring, saw them at Wembley and it was a brilliant show. I can’t think that David loses much sleep over Purple’s longevity and continued success, I don’t understand that comment, as Al @8 says, he is a classy guy these days not given to negativity.

    BLUESMAN says:

Yeah he was fantastic during the recent WS UK tour…….A new lease of life and the band were amazing….And the point about resenting Purple is way off the mark…He’s always been complimentary about that band and all it’s line ups.
DC’s nearing the end of his arena hard rock tours..maybe one or two more left at the most, and then would be great to hear him release some solo stuff featuring that amazing rich mid range he has..and maybe an acoustic tour with Bernie Marsden….Now THAT would be something special!!

@11 Also at Wembley and agree entirely that it was a “brilliant show” and that it’s great news he’s not retiring

I can understand his continued enthusiasm if The Purple Album tour has gone so well, and I don’t want him to retire completely, but I think the ‘Tarzan’ vocals (as David calls them) are really beyond him these days. In the studio he can sound pretty good, but live he is far from consistent, and often sounds pretty bad. I would love for him to sing in a more comfortable register, low to mid, on a different project that allowed him the space to show off his tone, a bluesy type of album that has credibility. Of course, I doubt he’ll do that, but just carry on sounding more and more strangulated, such a shame.
