Today I heard the new cd F.U.n.k. by former colleague Glenn Hughes.

Way more interesting than DC's efforts

GH is spitting them out by the numbers since the early 90's and has maintained a high level.

At the end of the month I ll be seeing him live again.

In the 90's I witnessed shows by him, really to cherish!
But the last years he exaggerated more and more the high screams and the volume was way too loud.

Glenn, not again! You're much better than that.

I don't know....to me it is very mediocre, very standard American sound...cheesy to my ears. Doug Aldrich IMHO is not a songwriter. Period. The chart success shows that the level of contemporary "music" is so low that this album nearly shines. But in all fairness, can it be compared to any of earlier works? Any WS record from any period - "European" blues or American heavy glam is way superior to this....to me it is just a money making effort. Sorry guys.

Here are some songs for ya!

After several listens, I find the new Whitesnake album to be quite good. It's not the overdone style of the '87 album and in fact sounds much like Coverdale's 2000 solo release "Into the Light" in some respects--particularly those softer numbers. "Summer Rain," "A Fool in Love" and "Til the End of Time" all sound more like that solo effort than Whitesnake. Not that that is a bad thing!

While the new album lacks a strong classic epic like "Still of the Night," it does hold its own in the Whitesnake catalogue. "You're All I Want" is reminiscent of the metal-era and could have been on the '87 album. Ditto "All For Love". The opener "Best Years" and the Schenker-esque riffed "Can You Hear the Wind Blow" top the list (for now).

What it all proves is that, like the current DP, Whitesnake can "still do it".

Nothing can touch "Slide It In," which I regard to be the strongest album, and most of us are more "classic" Whitesnake fans than the "metal" Whitesnake. However, this album falls somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Of more interest to Purple fans perhaps is the bonus live disc. "Burn/Stormbringer" is smashing. Not the Hughes "Burning Japan Live" version, but a strong effort indeed. A real live Hammond would be an improvement, but I found this version to be quite good.

Of the seven songs on the live bonus disc, and aside from "Burn/Stormbringer", FOUR are "classic"-era songs and only two are "metal"-era. Very interesting.

The only oopsie: "Don't Break My Heart Again". The Moody/Mardsen/Murray sound could not be duplicated and the heavy staccato beat becomes really annoying.

The video "Ready to Rock" is production "live" footage and does not contain the real, live soundtrack. It is instead synched. I would prefer the original live sound. But that's nit-picking.

You really can't complain that a new Whitesnake album came out. Give it a few more listens and it will grow on you.

Must say I was a little disappointed(even when my
expectations certainly weren't high).
Have been listening the album two times now,
and somehow it still sounds mediocre with the same old
WS(Zeppelin!)cliches, although the musicianship is superb!

It's still great to see WS on the charts & I'll promise to give it a third shot.

I finally took a listen the GTBB. On first take, it comes off pretty well. Seems to be over or under produced. Not sure which. Sounds a little "muddy". The songs are of a nice variety. Some basic hard rockers, some mellow, some bluesy, some in the middle.

I also mixed in the 4 Studio tracks that are on the "Live in the Shadow of the Blues", which brings it up to date and makes it a solid CD. I will play it in total while driving to the "Deep Purple Montreux '06 Showing" on the Big Screen tonight. It probably needs a second listen to get used to it.

I am glad that he put in the effort though and recorded something new to tour on rather than just rehash the old. I was beginning to fear that "Whitesnake" would become just another "Tribute Band", but they have avoided that by actually presenting something curent.

Cheers

This might be a good sign for Whitesnake, I attempted to purchase "Good To Be Bad" three days after it's release, and the music store I was at was already sold out!

I already admitted to play GTBB more than I expected.

But that is a studio effort.

I cannot tell if the live(?)versions of "Still of the night" are dubbed or something like that................

So I do not know for sure if DC is better nowadays live.
I ve heard other stories about that.........

well George. Much as I love DP (both historically and now) you do have a good point. Coverdale is the man when it comes to performance and will remain so for some time to come I think. GTTB is a great album.

Will it be the first Whitesnake chart-topper album ever?
I always thought, that DC is a great vocalist and Whitesnake (especially in Live performances) is extremely great band.
I watched Burn/Stormbringer and Still of The Night from new lineup DVD (2006 I think) and it was just better and heavier, than Deep Purple.. Don't blame me, even Coverdale is in much better form than Ian Gillan...
I'm a huge DP and IG fan, I just hated Coverdale (Don't know why), but, the truth is the truth...Today Whitesnake is more hard, more energetic, vibrant and life-full, than Deep Purple...

After a spellbinding concert in Melbourne,
Australia around 4 weeks ago, that is great news
for the "Snakers", i am really looking forward to the album/cd special edition, the only disappointing aspect of the new album are live
performances which have been lifted directly from
the recent in concert dvd, oh why oh why do we get repeats, hmmmmm
