I was about five years (1975)old, my older cousing playing child in time. But not until I was 14 when perfect strangers was released that I became a fan until now. I have traveled to many US cities for concerts and have had to pleasure to meet all of them, except for Ritchie. Not a day goes by that I dont play their music.

My brother and his best mate were into Purple in the early 70’s. He bought When We Rock circa 1978, which I inherited and played the heck out of. I still have that album and the cover is still in decent condition.

When my friend and I wanted to start a band, I lent him When We Rock and told him to listen to “Woman From Tokyo”. “This is how piano should be played,” I told him. It blew him away.

The next day, my buddy ended up buying all the DP he could find–in this case, In Rock, Who Do We Think We Are, Stormbringer and Made in Europe along with the omnibus Purple Passages from the Tetragrammaton years.

He called me on the phone and said, laughing, that In Rock was literally “in rock”–that is, that their heads were carved into Mount Rushmore (or Mount Blackmore, as we used to refer to it) and that there was this song called “Child in Time” that I just had to hear. He literally blew out a couple of speakers listening to it at high volume. I ended up using this song as my presentation for my music appreciation class in high school (or, as I called it, “music de-preciation” because of all the stoners in there who had no interest in music but took the class for an easy fine art credit).

It was Jon’s Concerto that got me interested in orchestral music, both collecting recordings and writing. His music opened up a whole other musical world from William Russo to Saint-Saëns. I couldn’t imagine my musical life without Beethoven (I have a picture of a young Ludwig. He looks just like a guitarist we’ve all heard of. It’s amazing).

Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to something Purple-related, and it’s been that way since 1978.

It’s all my brother’s fault.

I was at the NEC gig and can say that the band were excellant. I am a self confessed Blackmore addict and sine he left in 1993 Purple have not been the same. However, I have seen all the post Ritchie tours and this gig was the most enjoyable since he left. Great musicianship, one or two songs not normally played, and a general feel good factor about the whole show. Lets hope there will be a new album next year as Ian Gilan hinted at and long may the band continue

@4 I totally agree with you! Gov’t Mule is probably the best band of the last 20 years, in my opinion. I just saw them last week in Italy and I’m still recovering…by the way he also played the Burn riff during as long slide guitar solo!!

kevin is spot on with the security incident, i was to his right bang in front of steve. gillan saw the security guy walking towards the kid and approached stage front, anticipating what was going to happen. i noticed the security guy smile as he gave up.

i was in the second row but was able to stand in front of steve by the stage and was blown away. i could hear every single note he plucked, the rest of the band sounded distant in that position.

steve, never seems to have a bad night. gillan is never going to hit the heights vocally again but accept that and you won’t be disappointed. roger glover impressed me no end this time round, amazing sound, especially on the solo spots. don airey does the job admirably and ian paice is still a powerhouse although he seemed to take a back seat.

no programmes and the tour tshirt had no uk dates on back.

support was by a band called the crave who really impressed me.

Wat hebben we weer genoten in de HMH. Heerlijke avond mooie muziek ,nummers met net weer een ander twist dan het concert dat ik 10 juni zag in Dortmund.Wasted Sunset was een aangename verandering op de setlist.Glovers solo met Paice was absolute top.En, natuurlijk lees je dan de stukjes van de azijnpissers die verslag doen in de kranten over de stem van Gillan. Zeker , hij haalt de hoge noten niet meer, maar met de passie en het enthousiasme weet hij nog steeds te betoveren.
De man is 64!!!
Heb al weer kaarten besteld voor Essen en Oldenburg nov. 2010. Hopelijk een tour ter promotie van de langverwachte CD.

Really, with no itention to argue, I think the problem with DP sales is not Ritchie or Steve: both House Of Blue Lights and The Battle Rages On sold poorly even if Ritchie was there, so I doubt it’s all about him. I believe it’s more a combination of facts: after the Perfect Strangers tour Gillan’s voice started declining (on recent live recordings it’s a plain shame hearing him struggle thru The Highway Star or Space Truckin’), the better part of songs on HoBL and TBRO s*cked big time, a brief JLT incursion damaged the identity of the band as well… So, there’s a whole string of reasons why the sales went down.

I remember well, it was 1973, and I was a mere 11 yr. old boy. I had been into Black Oak Arkansas at the time. Into the Record shop and out with Black Oak’s Raunch & Roll live and Deep Purple’s Machinehead and I was forever changed by that Dynamic Hammond and Blackmores Stratocaster, along with big Ian’s notorious voice, then around a year later, playing basketball with my older friends, when Dean Glover popped in a cassete of a band, the title was Burn, Dean tells me this is the new Purple tunes, when I heard Sailaway, with Coverdales voice and I was hooked all over again, and I still am to this day, I try to follow all the Purple people as much as possible, but Coverdale and Ian Gillan I have huge respect for both!!! cheers Bill

For me it was the first time I put a number of my brother’s 45 singles onto the Garrard autochanger and ‘Speed King’ came belting out of of the little valve driven mono record player. I was 13 and I had never heard guitar played the way Ritchie Blackmore played it, he blazed away with that wonderful Strat/Marshall tone and I was smitten…totally. But what also amazed me was the way the whole band totally commanded their instruments - nothing at the time came close and probably never will. I still love em and even my 7 year old son who is learning drums wants to play like Ian Paice. Their legacy lives on!!

For me it was my Mum. She had bought Jesus Christ Superstar, loved Gillan singing Christ and so bought In Rock, in 1970. I still have the original LP and she had marked out Child In Time. You have to understand, this is no 60’s flower power woman. This is a classically trained pianist who listens mostly to classical music!

I was 9 back then. Thanks Mum!

I have stayed with them all the way through (the IG lineups) and love their new stuff too. It is different without the 2 maestros, but now they have 2 new ones, and the original soul is still there.

First heard DP in 1974 Baumholder Germany while my dad was in the military. My friend Larry and I went to a Community Center to buy some promme-frits (french fries) and noticed some GI’s around a juke box playing “Soul Makoosa” a soul Afrikan song that was quite lengthy. Larry who was on the H.S. football team and looked like a biker gang member at 15 yrs. old bumped the juke box to re-set it and played SOTW. Been a fan ever since. Wish I could see them more here in NJ. thanks.

They havent been using risers for over a year now. Both Ian and Don feel more ‘part of the band’ being off the risers. Also a much better sound for them too being on the ground. Although im sure if they knew that Chris Roberto and Graham, werent too keen on them being on the floor they will start using risers again!

…wonderfully written, it brings back fond memories..I had a slightly different introduction to DP. It was in late 1973 I got a cassette from a friend of my brothers with “Uriah Heep” printed on one side and “Deep Purple” printed on the other. That was all. I was immediately hooked on to “Uriah Heep” and I wanted their latest album (cassette)for christmas. I still remember the surprise when putting the cassette into my Phillips mono cassette player - and it sounded like “Deep Purple” ??!! - Yep, you got it, the labels had been misprinted…so what I thought was something by Uriah Heep was actually Deep Purple’s Made in Japan.. I still listen to it to this day, it’s number one in the CD changer stack in my car…nothing beats the feeling I get when I enter the highway friday afternoon, the whole weekend ahead, and Paicey starts up the Highway Star intro… goosebump factor: 10

Stefan to answer your question I am not sure what year Keith Moon passed but I missed the Quadrophenia Tour so maybe they came back around again after Whos Next but me doubts they played Los Angeles too many times after 1973 and no offense to that fella that replaced Keith but they were never the same after that. In fact Live at Leeds might have been the best album THE WHO ever did, just like Made in Japan was the best album Purple ever did.

Don’t forget that WH has also worked with RG in the past. Back in 2001 RG was asked to guest on Gov’t Mule’s version of “Maybe I’m A Leo” and two years later he also played at the famous New Orleans concert of Gov’t Mule that lasted more than four hours and featured a host of renowned bass players.

I found it very annoying. They both had a great time but for the audience (at least for me) it was way to long a jam. I’m there to see Deep Purple, not some guest of them!

Overall a good show altough I’ve seen better ones. Gillan should stop screaming. He just can’t do it anymore. That no problem, but don’t try. By time she sounded like the singer of ACDC.
Paice was a bit on the back. Why not center stage on a platform?
Too bad they did’t play Speed King. That should have brought soms power to the show.
Highlight for me was No One Came, Hush and Roger!. Also Wring That Neck was nice but they ruined it halfway i think by getting lost in they own jam.

As someone whose #1 band is DP, I got into Gov’t Mule thanks to Roger’s appearance on the Deep End album. They are by far one of the most eclectic bands ever. Warren plays practically any style. I recently saw them perform this past summer in New Jersey and met Warren afterwards. We spoke a little about Roger and he told me that he spoke with Roger that day. A few years back after a DP show I told Roger that I got into the Mule due to him and had purchased every CD and downloaded numerous live shows from their site (www.mule.net). ROger’s comment back was that Warren owes him money then- hopefully Roger got something. THis New Year’s Eve I will be seeing the Mule at the Beacon (usually a 3 1/2 - 4 hour show counting some breaks between sets and numerous guests.) Hopefully this year if the boys in Purple are not doing anything, they can return Warren’s favor and do a few songs on the 31st.
If anyone on this site is not familar with Gov’t Mule, they are a band worth hearing and getting into.

It was “Shades of Deep Purple” and at that time I wasn’t sure if the first ELP album was better … I liked both. The first Deep-Purple-album I bought was “Stormbringer”, maybe a bad choice, but it was cheap at the local record store. And I liked the cover …

Lovely story. For me, it was “Made in Japan,” when I was 15 years old (back in 1975). it was played for me by my sister’s boyfriend and I thought it was the most exciting thing I had ever heard (I still feel that way). Even the album cover and photos left an impression. They even “looked” exciting!

I agree to give another chance to Loosen My Strings and more Purpendicular (Ted, Rosa’s Cantina…) and Bananas (I Got Your Number, Picture of Innocence, Doing It Tonight…) songs ! And why not Any Fule Know That (I think that’s a nice song, quite heavy!)

And they could perhaps play some solo tracks ?? (Hang Me Out To Dry, Love Is All…)

I’ve been racking my brains since Sunday to think of a better show I’ve been to in the past 40 odd years……can’t think of one. DP were simply sensational, all 5 of them played together like they were somehow destined to.

Graham has it spot on with his review, I agree about the drummer - should be a bit elevated and even a 1 minute solo would have been nice - but from our seats in the balcony, 2nd row, dead centre, we had a damn good view of all of them. And what a great venue the Hammersmith Apollo is, forget about all those soulless places like
Wembley.

Here’s the only gripe I have, why only 5 shows in the UK? I don’t blame DP for that a bit, I mean if the promoters don’t book them………

Beautiful lyrics of which one can, ofcourse suggest, its about his former buddy again…..

I like Haunted although I always felt it suffered , like Love Conquered All due to too much syrup.

I also did make me rethink Jons opinion on LCA
He said that it suffered due to JLTs approach but I feel that JLT was not the biggest problem, the arrangements were….

Two otherwise beautiful ballads but let down by a intent to make something commercially viable?

Am I a disenchanted Ian Gillan fan?
Its very paradoxical.
I m still someone who cherishes loads of the stuff he did.

But….

I wish they would play “Haunted”. It is the best DP song of the Morse era by far and the clever lyrics could mean just about anything that you want them to be.

Wouldn´t mind a 90 % Morse era setlist and a huge move away from a glorious past ! One song that haven´t been played in ages is however the top wish in my book…….”The Mule” incorporating “A place in line” !!!!! They would go together amazingly well, at least in my opinion ! the reason mij was so good is because the band was clicking and there was inpiration.smoke sounded so good because blackmore was playing heavy chords wich made it sound big,but as time went on he started playing notes instead wich made the song thinner.he kept changing his sound,he should`ve listend to mij when roger asked and left his sound alone,because baby when you`ve got a killer tone you don`t mess with it.also he should have used the tasty solos like in space truking thru out the tours,it just fits and you expect to hear it every time the song is played.one final thing,there is absolutely no reason why the band cannot ressurect the sound from summer of `72they all know what they used.what say you,a couple of world tours that duplicate mij note for note and tone as well they should do it to go out with a bang,i`d go how about you?

Well - Hammersmith Apollo - not a very good place for a gig in my opinion.
The reason ——
It amazes me that people will pay £38 to go and sit in the bar until DP start their intro - then being half cut realise that the show is about to start!!!!
So in they come - disrupting everyone who has had the decency and respect to get to their seats early!!!!
Then for the first part of the set - they are up and down the bloody stairs getting yet more drinks ( there was a constant stream of idiots doing this) and then for the second half they are up and down for the BLOODY LOO!!!! What numb nuts - if they wanted to get thant drunk to enjoy it - STAY AT HOME WITH A VIDEO. It spoiled it for a lot of fans up in the circle.

DP were very very good as always - even the guy selling the Big Issue in the subway said so.

DP were fantastic in Manchester, Steve Morse was out of this world - wow! Actually the first time have seen them live although been a fan for years. A little dissappointed they didn’t do Child In Time as my sister and I were practising the sreaming on the way in the car……. but hey, maybe next time…… thanks guys!

I Have a Question. I read on Wikipedia that Ritchie used a Gibson ES-335 on Smoke On The Water from Machine Head. This can’t be true right. You can clearly hear it’s a strat. According to a friend of mine the only way it could be a Gibson is if Ritchie used a Coil Tap which makes it sound like a Strat. Does anybody know anything about this. Here’s the link to wiki.

@16 Deep Purple have been like this since Jon left James I still attend every tour(too young to have seen them in the 70s first Purple related gig was Dio era Rainbow) have done since the reunion but time has taken its toll and the loss of first Ritchie then Jon has left the band a bit faceless IMHO still a fine live band but a bit dare i say boring these days

Ritchie asked Ian to join Rainbow while in the process of recording demo s for Down To Earth

Ian refused….

Maybe he heard the demo of Lost In Hollywood and thought……….

Graham ruled on that song and I wonder what Ian would have made of that one…

The studioversion of NR seemed a throw away way back.
Later on I kind of reappreciated it…..

@12 “they don’t play in these countries often..” but they do, in Italy alone over 100000 people have seen dP in the last tours, in Germany they have full houses, in big arenas, every tour, and in Spain they are still a big draw.
Add to that Scandinavia, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey and just about the whole of Europe and Asia and you will find it’s more than “eastern Europe and SA”.

I tried to find some Tubes of the newly added tracks.

Iwas unpleasantly surprised by the fact that there plenty tubes of the well known songs right now but almost nothing from the above.

In the end I found a bit of Wasted Sunsets after a Highway Star for the zillionth of time!!!!, only for some seconds…….Someone who really does not grasp whats interesting right mow, IMHO

Not Responsible was a turn off.
I wonder if they retain it in the set…..
Gillan seems very tired during it.
Maybe some other recording or show will prove otherwise?

I also could not help looking up the solo section of my ahem beloved Plain Man….

In due sincerity…..

I always try to be objective and put a light on the positive sides of the proceedings.

Steve has a NEW ALBUM out and although I m not his greatest fan I d strongly recommend DP to give the man a chance to promote it with one or two instrumentals……Give the songs a Purpelised touch and so on……

Funny to see Ritchies SHADOW creeping up behind him while Steve is under the impression he s being centered by the lightning guy….

Remembered me of Ritchies shadow behind him during the HOBL tour thats for sure….

The audience seems dead. I mean…. dp play great, they are tight and give it a good groove, but… as much as I love them… it is their fault not to get the audience wild, which, on a rock concert, they should… Getting older? Huh?

And also, I am becoming to really dislike the Hush/BN encore, same since years ago. Lets put some other songs as encores, put Huhs away totally and replace it with….. lets say…. how does Kentucky Woman sound to you??? Would be a nice change imo…

Well - great setlist. Can be better? - yes it can.
What do I don’t like:
1. Sometimes i feel like screaming - part (most EPIC part) of the song is missing (ending solo)
2. At least one or two more song form Purpendicular / Bananas
3. Rapture Of the Deep - bornig. Remove it from the setlist. No matter what is title-track from last album.
4. Always have or Perfect Strangers or Knocking at your backdoor (or Not Responsible)
But - “Knocking” with Morse solo on the end. Not cutoff version without the solo. It doesn’t have to be like Blackmore’s solo, let Steve make his version (like he did for the “Smoke” )
5. More improvisation, duels like in the 90s in Speed King did Morse and Jon Lord do.

Something like this:

1 Intro/Highway Star ( Always diffrent intro, sometimes Roger , sometimes Roger/Morse (like in 2006-2008 ver), etc)
2 Things I Never Said

I retract the claim that Wasted Sunsets was played in Sydney on the 12th of December 1984. My apologies. The reason I thought it was played was because the setlist that I wrote down about a week or so after the show had Wasted Sunsets written instead of Under the Gun. At the time, the Perfect Strangers album was only fairly new, and I was aware that they played 5 songs from it. A poor memory on my part back then.

I was at the gig on Wednesday night, and loved the excellent mix of new and old material.

I just wanted to give my take on the fan/security guy “incident” which happened about 2/3rds of the way through.

Oh, and I was standing at the stage front, a couple of people away from the guy when it all happened, so I got a great view of it all.

Anyway, Purple were in full swing, and one of the guy’s at the front decided to get on his mate’s shoulders, as you do, and generally enjoy himself by waving his arms, and basically have fun.

Anyway, the security guard from the right (facing the stage) noticed and made his way over to the two guys with a view to getting the guy off his mates shoulders, however, as the security guy got there, Ian Gillan spotted him trying to get the guy down, and reached out to hold onto the shoulder guy to stop him being dragged off by the security guard.

And he held, and he held, for a good 30 seconds….

While he (Gillan) was doing this, he was staring at the security guard, who was still trying in vain to get the guy down, and then Gillan said (into his mic, looking at the security guard) “what’s your fucking problem”, “what’s your fucking problem”. At which point he pulled the shoulder guy on stage, to prove a point to security guy, at which point security guy admitted defeat, and scurried off back the way he came.

So, Gillan wasn’t being held BY the shoulder guy, it as the other way round, Gillan was holding ONTO him, to get the better of an over zealous secrity guard….ever the rebel, our Mr. gillan !!!!

End result, Gillan 1 : Security 0

Great gig guys. Loved it.

Simply cant agree that Purple were on great form at all they were very good as far as the playing side of things is concerned ie everything was played well enough and profesionally but in all honesty it was very much rock by numbers where was the excitement and intensity of old??And Gillan hardly spoke at all during the whole show yes i know they play hundreds of gigs a year and this was just another one for them but there was a time when a purple gig was something special and the band would really connect with the crowd sadly it seemed to me that they didnt even know where they were playing and it was almost like autopilot for them

I took my 15 year old son to the concert to let him se how it should be done, I have been a fan since 1971, I was not disappointed superb performance. Both He and I had a great time only thing I would change would be add a solo from Paicey.

Surely some mistake? Why do none of teh audios from those shows feature the track?
No, this IS the first live airing of Sunsets, other than Big Ian’s solo tour.

Well, Ted, despite everything else I truly like several BANANAS tracks.

I would not mind hearing some of those….

I saw DP on a festival overhere in 2003 and they did I got Your Number.
After that it was early 2006 and it was ROTD time.
So I missed out on hearing a lot of Bananas.
I know they DID do some of those.

I got yor number is not my favourite of the album but its better than rehashing some of the others for the zillionth time.
I forgot if they did another then.
The gig was not fullfilling in general and I m not alone on that one.

I have yet not heard, anybody ????, a GOOD link to the recently added tracks to the setlist, but I m curious to hear what they do with it.

The setlist right now is better than what it had become for ages,
But ofcourse it can be bettered.

I m still in favour of ditching some oldies.

Replace HUSH with The Bird Has Flown or Rosa s Cantina…..
Replace the worn out Morse instrumentals by something from his album, like they did with Tommy.

Even I cannot grasp why they keep on doing WDG and Contact Lost.
There MUST be some more from HIS backcatalogue to do!!!!!

I d not mind some more of PURPENDICULAR but am tired of SIFLS, sorry…..

Not Responsible, a retake on Lost In Hollywood someone told me lately, is kinda funny but not a killer classic IMHO, I d go for A Gypsies Kiss, The Unwritten Law, Bad Attitude or even better…….

To be honest i was dissapointed with the Glasgow show i felt the band were simply going through the motions Ian Gillan hardly communicated with the audience at all and seemed to me as if he didnt even know he was playing Glasgow.Not Responsible seemed to go over most peoples heads and was poorly sung anyway and Wring That Neck should NOT be in the set if Blackers and Lord are not in the band .For me although the band do play well enough the excitement has gone from a DP concert they miss Blackers and Lord not only for their musincianship but for their charisma Steve and Don are great musicians but lack presence

Well, I’m willing to bet you millions of doallars that you’re mistaken!
Every single show they did in OZ 84 was recorded and widely circulated, and Sydney Entertainment Center 12-12-84 is one of the most well known recordings from that visit and they did not play ‘WS’ that night or any other according to the experts, which is any self respecting collector of such material.
They also did not play it in Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane, the recordings of those shows prove so as well.

Whatever turns you on… but ‘HOP’ (yuck imo) didn’t work and thats a fact, they only played it a few times, if that. They did it at the Berlin release party and at some following shows if I remember correctly, but it was instantly dropped because it just didn’t fly at all, especially in the vocal department. ‘Bananas’ on the other hand was played through most of the 2004 tour, but in NYC they didn’t play it, that was on the first US leg. They alternated it, but on the second leg they played it every night.

Being only 24yrs of age manchester was the first deep purple gig i had attended. I know that i will never see them in their prime but they did not disappoint me. i didn’t even miss lord or blackmore as they were well replaced by morse and airey.

Deep Purple seem to get mainly criticism these days but they should not stop touring while they have the obvious strength to do so. They have entertained and inspired me since i was 17yrs old and manchesters performance was better than many new bands i have watched.

Good Job guys keep it up and i’ll be back to watch you again…

A gig that included House of Pain and title track Bananas would more than make the night. When seeing them in NYC for the Bananas tour, I expected both as they are beyond killer tunes. Bananas tune is Purple meets Dregs. As we all know from these blogs, many fans cannot appreciate influence brought into any band let alone Purple.

Does anybody recollect either or both of these tunes being played at any of gigs attended?

Gillan always contracdicts himself and exaggerates.

They get excellent crowds in France and eastern Europe, so don’t tell me there isn’t money there. In the States, they play in similar size venues to what they do in the UK, so that is not big money.

im 18 i have seen them 3 times now, and they are getting better and better. more jazzy this time, loved wring that neck. i took a mate along for the first time to see purple and he couldnt believe how often they were smiling and laughing on stage.
and gillan saying a new album potentially being recorded in jan. sounds good to me as long as it is heavy like rapture not like bananas

This was not the first time they have played Wasted Sunsets. I saw them play it in Sydney on the 12th of December 1984. They may have played it in Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane prior to this. These were the first of the reunion shows.

Going by the above, the Manchester gig was really good.

Believe me, the gig tonight at the Armadillo in Glasgow was superb.

I have to admit, the last 3 DP gigs in Glasgow, were, on reflection, disappointing. All was forgiven tonight.

A crisp, clear and heavy sound with Paicey’s drums and Glover’s bass pulsating through the crowd was enthralling. Steve Morse was simply stunning and Don Airey has finally grasped the concept that the keyboard sound is an integral part of why we all love listening to Deep Purple. Gillan’s voice struggled at times, but no-one cared. This was a refreshed Purple sound with new twists on most of the numbers.

DP have provided me with the soundtrack to my entire life and on the back of tonight’s performance, will continue to do so for my daughter.

If I never get to see you live again, thanks for tonight. You gave me with an opportunity to share a special moment in time with my daughter - Deep Purple playing at full throttle, energised and with a rejuvenated sound that has been missing for a while.

My favorite band of all time continue to blow me away each time I see them. Mr Gillan (despite his lack of range/sustain these days) is the consumate vocalist/frontman who always looks like he’s enjoying every moment even when he’s not singing. Paicey and Roger G are the best rhythm section in rock as always and Don Airey & Steve Morse are more than capable replacements for messers Lord & Blackmore.

Keep it up lads and don’t leave it too long before you come back to the UK (small venues are the best, sod yer NEC’s etc!!).

It’s great to see the band break away from the Machine Head-heavy setlist,though.We’ll see how long that lasts.

Hello everyone, been awhile since I’ve been on, the setlist sounds great, Wasted Sunsets is a great track, I’ve actually used that track for years closing my CD compilations, Interesting, that only one tune from Bananas actually appears live, and that is the instrumental for Steve, I personally would like to hear Sun Goes Down or Silver Tongue thrown in also. I would love to see them play that setlist in the US, but here in the good ole US we usually get Purple as a support slot!! Now how insulting is that????? Deep Purple is still the greatest absolute Rock Band in the world as far as I can see, Theres only a handful of Great Bands left out there! And I would definitely include Whitesnake in there with them!! Cheers BP

Just listened to a recording of his closing goodbye at the ONLY Deep Purple 2008 gig in which he said next year,(2009),DP would do a good long tour in the UK.

Obviously, he has a very short memory!

I have been a DP fan for so many years, however, this was the 1st time I have managed to see them live, in Manchester last night (10th November 2009). I thought they would have lacked some of the class of yesteryear I was so wrong, I may be wearing rose tinted glasses, the concert was fantastic, I realised how many times I have missed them in the past and what a shame it was I have. I was not disappointed, the place was rocking and when you thought it was slowing down a little they threw in a classic to bring everything back to life. Very professional and musicians of the highest class, Gillan, Glover, Paice, Airey & Morse you all showed your class. FANTASTIC.

Thoroughly enjoyed last night’s gig in Manchester. Our group had two DP first-timers (one “older” generation, one “younger” generation) and both had a great time. Good mix of older and newer material, usual professionalism and great musicianship. Just wish we didn’t have to wait so long between UK tours. I’ll have to get my passport renewed!

I don’t know will admin allow this, but I have to say, and it’s just my opinion: for me this DP is DP with Steve Morse, not DP as complete unit (even though they had good time with him), but Ritchie is DP, and he’s essential part of what DP was and is. His spirit will always fly over them and through their music. I’m personally huge Morse’s fan, though I prefer SM Band over DD; but there’s nothing I can compare with what Ritchie has done - for me there’s no discussion on that matter.

they are 2 greats musician,I have no doubts..

SM is born in USA,RB in UK..2 differents culture of life,of history,of musical history,2 big different styles to think and to approach to the music..

Now I appreciate SM more than RB because he plays rock,I appreciate RB because with his guitar he seems to me like a poet,a painter like a Caravaggio,Giotto..
I like his sound..

SM is more plastic…different..but he rocks!

One couldn’t blame the English for feeling dissed as Deep Purple is a British band, albeit with an American guitar player. It took a long time for the reformed DP to reach England back in the day, and even then it was only for a short time.

While I understand Purple’s reasoning, it is still a shame their home fans do not receive as much attention as other countries. As an American, I sympathize with the frustration as Purple has pretty much given up at playing here. However, it is my hope that DP will be able to play as much as possible in front of the home fans.

Another issue is the one of a new album. I find it interesting that members are able to find the time and resources to do solo tours and record solo albums and that Gillan has “got about 50 songs in my library at the moment, but they’re not for Deep Purple.”

In this age of downloads, writing new songs on the go and making them available one-by-one over a period of time would be a relatively simple matter, rendering the problems associated with producing and financing an entire CD moot. How would you like a new Deep Purple song every few weeks? This way of writing might even be more conducive to the creative process as the band can rehearse and try out new numbers live before they are committed to record, and this method would have minimal impact on their touring schedule. These new numbers even could be recorded live. Just a thought ;).

My concern is that this may be the last opportunity for a Deep Purple album. With five years between recordings being the norm, I find it unlikely that Purple would produce an album in 2015. Even now, age has been a topic of much debate. How much of an impact would another five years have? In addition, who knows what the music climate will be at that time.

The 2010 album could very well be their swan song, and I cringe at the thought of their going into the studio with such a nonchalant attitude. Two-thousand ten will mark 40 years of Mark II albums, starting with 1970’s In Rock release. Given the historic potential of the forthcoming album, extra effort needs to be made–and one way to do that is to give Steve Morse and Don Airey free reign to create the trademark guitar-organ virtuosity.

I think that you’ve messed up things - I think that Ritchie is the one who experiments with styles, if you don’t like them OK, but the rest is predictable HR more or less LZ sound, over and over again. I have everything that Morse has done, and it’s pretty much same, since first DD album. Still if you listen to Ritchie from pre - DP to BN, it’s all different in style, genre, etc. Not to mention uniqueness of his work in sound and style, and being influential and essential for any guitar virtuoso. Well today he’s into this medieval thing, not what we prefer,but new step and appropriate way for him and his life period - after all that he’s done, that’s it, and why not. I wouldn’t like to see him trying to jump and act wildly like in California Jam, it’s just OK what he end up with. Perhaps we’ll see him in kind of work retrospection thing, and that would be that.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. The members of the ‘kinder happier’ DP are in a better place emotionally with Morse. That said the musical chemistry of the band changed for good when Ritchie left. The last memorable DP album for me was Perfect Strangers. Kudos to Steve Morse, a fantastic fellow and great guitarist for stepping in when he did, but Deep Purple is and will always be Ritchie Blackmore……

Steve’s music is learned in the school.Scales mode and harmony.He was applied Mahavishnu Orchestra alumni in early 70’s.To make music based on books and class is quite simple due to the achademic knowledge.You just have to bland some styles to impress the crowd.To write good and timeless songs is a little harder.Of course Ritchie didn’t do it alone.Steve is great but i’d allways thouth his music was a guitar oriented instrumental for elevators and as background in supermarkets.Dixie Dregs was a little better,but take a listen in The Dregs stuff.It’s boring.By the middle of the record you think you listening the previous number exactly what did happen with A Band On.You hardly can’t separate the songs.To impress the crowd is easy for a great guitar player.Fast runs,arppegios in the speed of light,distorted tones that goes can can can can can…whamy bars dive bombs,etc,an arsenal that make the player’s life a lot easier.But now …IF you really wants to know about Magic,dramaticity,timless music you’ll have to Ritchie (errr),reach a little further on black.Or into the purple.Or in the colours of a Rainbow…

# 25 i partly feel what you are saying. i must admit that the BN albums are getting similiar and i personally would like to see him branch out some. since his rock day’s are probably over, i would like to see him do what uli jon roth has done (incidentally with don airey on keyboards!), play some classical pieces on electric guitar. uli covered vivaldi’s four seasons quite well! seems more exciting than the renaisance stuff for us strat fans. along the lines of diff. to cure, snowman, weiss heim etc.

They aren’t that far apart in experience, in fact with Steves education he’s been down areas of the pike Ritchie hasn’t. So its really not a fair argument that Ritchie has been recording longer, there is so much more to it. They’re two different styles and thats the easiest way to distinguish them, but that must be too easy for people. Some like Ritchie’s style and some like Morse’ style, and then there is those idiots like myself who’re flexible enough to enjoy them both and still tie my shoes.

I totally agree with the all those comments about the Somerville show. I was 3rd row center and was prepared to be let down but Ritchie really did seem quite happy. The band was quite good as well. Black Night was a stunner and while the way it ended really ticked me off, it seemed like things were picking up and everyone was having such a great time, the memories more than make up for that. Sure hope they return to Somerville.

I feel Dio has some sour grapes because around 1998 there could have been a Rainbow reunion with Blackers, Cozy and HIM.

Ofcourse, Cozy RIP, died and RB went on to do what he still does…..
Thats very frustrating ofcourse……

Who would not prefer a Dio and Blackmore reunion above the Heaven and Hell thing?

I find the H and H dissappointing.

It might give something on stage but the album, like FUSED, is wayyyyyyyyyyy to dark.

Unfortunately I ve to watch very carefully how I spend my money right now.

After years of neglect and putting countless Guilders and Ero s into DP family pockets I m trying to fix my house a bit.

It s a shame cause these Gillan live outings are amongst the ones waited for so long in the past……

A pity as well it took so long to get these out…..

The visualisation of things concerning DP and family still on shelves is a real mindboggler.

What about a decent live double disc with Bonnet during Down To Earth era or a 2 disc with JLT during Rainbow?

Thank God I ll be seeing The Mighty Screamer Graham Bonnet soon LIVE over here….

a reliable user on the deep purple italian forum has addressed some issues in regards of this release:

- on 4/3/1981 deep purple played in nottingham (not at the rainbow in london)

- “if you believe” from the nottingham radio show was published in “double trouble” and credited by mistake as “recorded at the london rainbow”

- on 5/3/1981 deep purple played at the london rainbow

- lucille live from the reading festival was included by mistake in “mr universe” (instead of the studio version)

Well I know who I’d rather see live: hint - it ain’t the one in tights. RB is still a genius but his music has become an endless rehash of itself. He has essentially made the same album 7 or 8 times in a row and what started out as a promising adventure has become a bland and predictable excursion into pseudo-mediaevel middle-of-the-road pop. It’s safe predicatable conservative music. Contrast that with Steve Morse who continues to experiment with styles, genres, line-ups, forms etc. I don’t like everything he does but at least he’s not just doing the same thing over and over again. And no I’m not trying to rehash all those tedious ‘who is better’ arguments that go nowhere. It’s just that I still love Ritchie as a guitarist but I find myself constantly disappointed at what his music has become.

Quite surprising to see such narrow-minded comments from Purple fans…

I have to admit, that I do not really like rap or hip-hop, and find it kind of funny seeing for instance Finnish artists (cross the last word over if you like…) doing the same thing. As a Finn I find that kind of music pretty distant to me, as there is a cultural connection, isn’t there? But still, to hate a genre…get a life, will you. Hats off to anybody seriously expressing oneself in a way or another musically, whether you like it or not personally.

Another issue is music that is crap. There always has been that stuff and always will be, but it does not necessarily have to do with the genre.

By the way, many contemporary top musicians criss-cross between genres, which is understandable and should be encouraged, as it keeps music evolving AND developes playing styles and methods of making music. Why should we (fans) get stuck, then?

i think comment #10 nails it basically. best comeback on this site of ‘know- it- all’s’ in my ‘know-it all- opinion’! ritchie has been in the music biz for alot longer and it shows. i think steve is awesome too. there is no mistaking a true musician that can convey taste, emotion, and an ability for improvisation. oh, and #19, how about that hurdy gurdy playing!?!

Blackmore could quit cold today, and the body of work he has done in the past would still make him the greatest overall hard rock guitarist to ever pick up the instrument. The fact that he has mastered yet another genre just adds to that greatness.

I’ve seen both several times and there will never be anything more impressing than ritchie!
Who wrote all the great songs in dp and rainbow? Who had the courage to leave dp and go his own ways with rainbow and bn? Who had the highest record-sales? On whom focus all these discussion in the forums even though not with purple anymore? Who’s the real legend?
Ritchie is definitely the greatest!
Steve is a really nice guy and a great guitarist but blackmore is outstanding.

I’ll be supporting this release for sure, I think along with the Angel Aire 79-80 BBC CD it will go very well in serving up the best live documents in the tons of shows they played over the best of those years. The 1980 BBC show is the very best imo, that show is amazing! I agree it should be included.
