Gillan often looks uncomfortable waiting for translations but handles responses quite well. He seems embarrassed and doesn’t know what to do in the meantime! Oh no…another “Smoke on the Water” question… Most people in the audience, on the other hand, sounded like they understood English since they applauded and laughed even before the official translation.

The host was clearly taken by being in the presence of such legendary musicians. Both Glover and Gillan–but especially Gillan–are bemused by all the attention and still look like they wonder why anyone would want their autograph–even after all these years!

I played “Smoke” with Gillan in 2006 during a solo tour and when I asked him to sign my Stratocaster, he looked confused–as if I were joking–and said, “Are you sure?” then looked uncomfortable doing it! Very humble.

I only wish Purple would receive the same attention here in the United States.

It isn’t Gary Moore’s tune, it was apparently written by Max Middleton who was in Jeff Becks band in the mid 70′s, on some of his classic albums! It is a a tribute to Jeff Beck, some sources say Moore co wrote it, some do not! Clem Clempson’s original guitar playing on the original version on Cozy Powells ‘Over The Top” album, leaves Moore’s version behind big time! Check it out & see!
I am a fan of Gary Moore’s late 70′s to the mid 80′s material, a wonderful player & a good songwriter also, but he started to bore me to tears around the Run for Cover album. Wild Frontier I didn’t get into at all!
His later blues material had one or two decent tunes, but his earlier material was by far, more melodic & had a much more emotional feel to it for me!
Blackmore’s tune is Blackmore all over, some notes are the same, it isn’t a rip off at all, Blackmore is Blackmore! He was playing that stuff eons before a lot of players were!

@13 If anything,Coverdale,it was very much influenced from Paul Rodgers.( being from the same area as well)…that is not the point anyway,the bottom line is that every one, one way or another “borrowed” from each other.
@12 lol Posh accent I like that.
@14 all the bands “stole” from other musicians,Blackmore has admitted that,riffs and such,but there’s no other band that blatantly stole music and lyrics from other singers and bands and not give the other person any royalties at all! just omitted in a most unscrupulous way other people!
In Zeppelin case they always settled out of the court! Back in those days,there was no Ipads and Ipods and Itunes,Jimmy Page had millions of records at home and that “helped’ him to choose and listen to a lot of American Blues and folk.

Maybe it’s a sacrilege but I listened to “Carry On Jon” a few times and somehow Ritchie’s Strat tone has changed, but not for the better. The guitar sounds quite strange to be honest, at least it doesn’t have the same quality as to when he was with Purple. I prefer the Gary Moore tune as well, believe it or not. But the organ playing reminds me more of Jon than anything Don played on the new Purple Album.

Coverdale only occasionally reminds to Plant’s style (‘still of the night’ and some songs on the Coverdale/Page album) but in general he didn’t copied Robert Plant in fact he has his own style and peculiar timbre/tone…but if we have to look for similarities I would tell (the anyway inferior imo) Paul Rodgers…

Robert Plant should shut up, he copied a lot from Steve Marriot (compare ‘you need loving’ by Small Faces vs ‘Whola lotta love’ by Zeppelin)

Hah, I was intended to be there with Ian & Rog, but due to some unforeseen circumstances another translator replaced me

Btw, Ian & Bron will be featured as a couple in another one of the most popular (if not the most) TV show called Profile. (The local show that I hate most, because of its disgustingly boulevard-ish format).
Anyways, sounds interesting to watch some memories from their first meeting, first kiss, their family, their wedding in Georgia in 1990 etc.

My first initial reaction to listening to ‘Carry on…Jon’ was ‘The Loner’ by our very own Gary Moore. To be honest I am slighly disappointed with Ritchie here..now whether he was ‘inspired’ by Gary’s tune or just directly copied some notes is anyone’s guess! I think Ritchie should have been a little more original..its a beautiful piece of music from Ritchie nonetheless but I wonder why I can’t get Gary Moore out of my head….

Whilst I don’t usually pay any attention to polls or the like, the drum & bass rhythm thing needs commenting on big time!
Where is Bill Bruford & Chris Squire from Yes & also Alan White & Squire from the same band? Bruford & Tony Levin from 80′s King Crimson also, with these sort of mind blowing rhythm pairs left out, it really does show up exactly what it is! By the way, I do agree with Geddy Lee & Neil Peart of course being right up there. There are so many great drummers & bass players not in both of these lists.
I could go on, but why bother!

Thank you for compiling all that information. It is very interesting.

As usual, the list is full of the popular, the trendy, the overrated, and the mediocre. Most are not even in Deep Purple’s league. This is all reminiscent of the situation regarding the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Deep Purple’s influence cannot be denied. Their longevity is practically unprecedented, and their influence virtually a how-to book for all others to follow.

However, they never were a political band. They did not go out of their way to talk to the “right” people and back the “right” causes. Further, they avoided the hard drug scene (for the most part) and ignored label suggestions to dress a certain way or behave a certain way–particularly one guitarist that used to be in the band.

I believe Purple paid for that. By not playing “the game,” they were put on the “fecal roster” and today have the reputation of not being team players.

By sticking to their principles, the former and current members of Deep Purple do not receive the kudos that are due them. They simply never have been trendy enough to be included on these lists.

Well, I wish both of them the best but they do take themselves a little too seriously. Apart from the fake posh accent hiding their roots for the American audience, they are old men who sang rock and roll, both lifting a lot from US singers on the way. Big deal. Plant imagines Zep are far more important in the history of music than they were, and Coverdale, well, what can you say — he’s ripped himself off enough I think he could put a circle around the sun, looking for gypsy queens, LOL. Now, the best suggestion here is the one that they do a duet with both Ritchie and Jimmy on guitar….live. Then, RB can go back to his Benny Hill backing band, Coverdale can act the old tart for another tour, Jimmy can ask everyone else to pay for the drinks, and Percy can act it up in Austin as a serious musicologist…. happy daze.

@20 as much as we want to have another album,it won’t happen anytime soon,if ever ! @I agree with Mc Gregor than with you bud,but yeah there are similarities,but I still think it is not the same,Maybe Mr Blackmore “subconsciously” had that tune all along,or maybe he didn’t hear that song at all? Music is a strange thing! I think your love for the late Mr Moore making you a little biased,lol just kidding.I used to listen to Gary Moore,and I kind of got tired of him playing the blues and lost track of him after that since 1997 or 98 I find Blues very limited and I totally agree with Mr Blackmore on that !

I saw that tour and it did work. Of course that album contains songs the constantly play anyway. Promoting this amazing album in its entirety would be ballsy and ‘dangerous’ as Roger has described Purple to be many times. It would be the perfect mix. They have played 21 songs live before. I’d like them to mix it up though. Instead of doing the whole album at once. A couple from ‘?!’, then 1 from classic era and I from past MK7/8. Then a couple from ‘?!’ and repeat format. They could change up the 10 tracks throughout the tour, while leaving all the ‘?!’ songs in tact. This is what they should have been doing all along with each new album. It would have kept them on the ‘current map’ instead of fading into ‘classic rock oblivion’.

As I remember it: Wasn’t it Robert who wrote some annoying letters to Jimmy when he was playing with David? I believe it was hard to swallow that Jimmy teamed up with David who obviously copied a lot of Robert’s signature characteristics. But on the other hand: Isn’t it comforting to be such a heavy influence on other quite famous contemporary singers?

In the early days of Zeppelin one could argue about the fact that Robert copied Buddy Guy A LOT.

Regarding ‘The Loner’ track, I first heard that on the Cozy Powell record ‘Over The Top’. I think the British guitarist Clem Clempson played that guitar & according to the credits Max Middleton wrote it, but maybe Gary Moore could have co written it with Middleton, depending on what you read. Apparently it is a tribute to Jeff Beck who Cozy Powell also played with, among others! It does smack of Beck’s style for sure! Gary Moore ‘covered’ it, depending on how you could look at the definition of the word ‘covered’ that is! There are some great guitarists on those Cozy Powell records, the ‘Tilt’ album has that mind blowing Gary Moore track ‘Sunset” & Octupuss has the very melodic track ‘Dartmoore’ from Moore again, among a few others! The ‘Loner’ is a very melodic track also, but whether Blackmore ripped it off, I don’t know about that! His reputation precedes him in that aspect, it has some similarity, but Blackmore has always played that style anyway at times, so some notes are similar. After all this time in rock music, it can happen, some things sound a bit like other things! That is what my ears hear at certain times anyway. Cheers!

I couldn’t believe my eyes……I scoured the article back and forth a number of times to see if I had missed something. I scoured the magazine front to back and back to front several times, BUT no luck…..our Purple heroes have been completely been ignored, neglected, dissed, or whatever once more time.

I thought the music media’s critical indifference, hostility, or whatever it is towards Deep Purple was largely a US based phenomenon. I see however that even in the UK Purple are sadly written out of the history books.

Can someone please explain to me how such a travesty like this can occur???? What did Deep Purple do or not do to deserve such injustice??????

You are SO RIGHT!! I am quite disappointed at TMIB here. Being a Gary Moore fanatic and Blackmore fanatic at the same time, I can’t believe he did this. It is the LONER which is my favorite instrumental from Mr. Moore. Who would have thought RIP actually meant RIP OFF. One would have thought Ritchie would have been a little more inspired to ‘feel’ a riff for JON than to ‘steel’ a riff for JON. The short intro to Uncommon Man on Now What?! is a true example of ‘feeling’ the riff. I get goose bumps and a lump in my throat every time I hear it. This lame thing from Ritchie only makes my skin crawl…. ‘Carry On Jon’? He should have called it ‘Thanks Gary’. Oh and also, it doesn’t even hold a candle to ‘The Loner’.

What negative things avid said about Plant in the past? I just know R.Plant pointed David as an imitation of himself (which is untrue and I think he was moved by the anvy for David recording with Jimmy and having a better vocal shape at that time). on the other hand I don’t see any North American dates for this year,at least until November,I think we have to wait until 2014 for that (deep purple )

Yeah, I too have had my share of improper balancing some priorities and have done much juggling to compensate. The ‘human’ nature leaning towards various temptations (costly record collecting among other things) sometimes gets the best of us….

Unfortunately I have NEVER been in a position I could afford the forementioned behaviour.

Still I did.

It DID cost me an arm and an leg, actually.

Had to fight hard to come back from finacial bankruptcy more than once.
And yes, I only blame myself for not handling the balance of my priorities as well as you appearantly were able to.

It is all in the past and I cant change things like that.

Would love to travel a lot etc but my health is giving me a hard time.
And after all those years in which I kinda indulged wheras I should have been more careful I DO balnce my priorities in such a way I almost seldom see shows now.

But I had my fill : )

Great read, even though short and incomplete due to the article as a whole being closed to a purchase. Would love to read it all…..but. That being said, the main thing to take from this snippet is that the one thing that has kept them together as they are, is respect and the fact they do well playing off each other. That’s the magic for long term. It’s proven. All the other MKs only lasted a couple of years each. Too much ego vs drama vs selfish vs lack of discipline. Now it’s all good, and has been since 1994. Longest Purple run. Mk7 ran 8 years. Mk8 is on 11 and still going.

The importance of a good drummer cannot be understated.

As a guitarist, I am inspired by the drumming–both in performance and in composition. The rhythm section is the foundation of a good song, and the drummer is responsible for that first indication–that kernel–of an idea. Without that push, it is very difficult to put something together of quality. A guitarist can come up with a riff, but it will be the drummer to take that and give it the edge and point it into a direction.

Ian Paice was never a flashy drummer. He plays very cleanly, extremely consistently, and holds to Glover’s mantra of keeping a firm rhythm going when all hell is breaking loose.

When he solos, however, he is unbeatable. His use of dynamics is greater than anyone I can think of, but his playing is never trite or showy. I get tired of watching most drummers bang around on the drums, but when Paicey solos, it’s always entertaining. The Third Movement of the Concerto is one of my favorites.

Ian Paice is also someone–despite his lack of “flash”–that you can tell it is he who is playing without seeing him. That is very difficult for a drummer. Most drummers are anonymous, but you always know it’s Ian Paice.

Well Mark….

Being as that I have been a married family man with children since 1979, a career, many responsibilities and many hobbies, my ability to travel all over the world was hindered, but I did to do a lot of it here in the States. They have played here (somewhere) in promotion of all of their albums and I have seen each since they toured ‘Burn’ early 1974. Missed HOBL, S&M and TBRO though. Those were turbulent times for me and traveling was out of the question. In your case, you can drive, hitchhike, take a bus or ride with a friend to all of those places you listed. I would have to come up with 2 round trip overseas airline tickets to head over there. I have flown a couple of times domestically to see them, but I can’t justify the expense of flying over there for a show. Probably the main reason you haven’t been here yet….. Though I did go to Europe for 10 days on our Honeymoon in 1996 and toured France, Germany, London. Switzerland, and Amsterdam. Unfortunately, Purple weren’t playing. But, we had just seen them in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on one of their 4 secret gigs promoting ‘Purpendiclar’ before we left. When are you heading over here? I’d love to share a ‘Red Dog’ with ya…..

Oh, and a third Biggie that I heard. He stated that they could play the whole album LIVE due to the fact that it was basically wrote and recorded it LIVE. Funny how videos can change ones take on a song. When I first heard ‘Vincent Price’, I wasn’t sure…. Then when I saw the video, I fell in love with it. The tongue and cheek approach to the ‘Damsel in Distress/Rocky Horror Picture Show/Mistress of the Dark’ appealed to me immensely. The lap dance didn’t harm either (now I understand why the boyz are so ‘stiff’ at the end). Oh yeah, wax figures…… All the proper ingredients for a ‘Rock & Roll’ video. ?urfect!

Finally took a listen to the interview and 2 things stood out. Mainly is his desire to jump right back in the studio with Purple and do some more recordings. He is basically begging them to do it. Man, if that doesn’t motivate the band nothing will. Second is at the end of the interview where he states how well it is doing overseas, but how it isn’t even known here in the states and how he is begging us fans to get the word out. Well, I agree with that but, they took the bull by the horns and picked a top notch producer which has produced one of their best albums to date. Isn’t it time they do the same with their promoter?!

Actually, this is the first time I could see the possibility of Ritchie on stage with Purple, and much warranted. The two Purple Iconic figures whom have passed (Lord and Nobs) deserve a proper send off, and this would surely be a proper send off. Smoke on the Water came about due to the now famous event at the Jazz Fest. The band setting up on the shoreline and Ritchie stepping on stage with the band and his Strat, along side Steve Morse with an extended Hammond solo from Don Airey for JON. Man, what a historic moment that would be……

Very good album, suprising me… Keyboards are very present and it’s a very good thing ! Guitars, Bass, Drums are naturally excellent ! And thank you to Mr Gillan for singing that way, …I’m very pround to be a Purple fan since…so many years ! I’ ve seen you 15 times ! and I’ll be there the following concert in Belgium with my son Julien (10 years…) . My son have seen you one time and love especially “Hush” ” And “the battle rages on ” If you can play “hell to pray” in concert, he’ll never forget it, i Think !. Roger, you can be proud of the energy you put in the band !

A beautiful up and top Blackmore melody full feeling and heart.

But what surprises me and strikes me indeed ,is in the secund part the keyboard becomes so wonderful through and interact with the Fender just as if it was Lord playing…just shivering…

I also noticed that nearly to the end the fender makes soft harmonious chords in true deep Purple style …I thought with shivers on Perfect Strangers begin…

It ‘s great not only for this wonderful piece of music but also as a tribute for Jon!Thanx Ritchie!

I have to listened to Now what many times now and i find the songs remind me of the Progressive flourish of Mark One and the power of Mark two combined. Quite a nice combination and i would not hesitate to rate this Album as Deep purple’s Best since Burn. A very smooth offering indeed!

@11 and you know why it may never be remixed ? the bad blood btw Gillan-Blackmore has already surfaced,and the fact that it took em months to finish the record,shows the strain already,if you notice in the video Bat Attitude,Blackmore playing with his head down and other band members not too happy looking.Blackmore is already tired with the direction and want another direction and singer.Gillan didn’t help matters at the time by getting drunk and damaging his voice,so the album is what it is,good one but not so great sounding.

Purple bias in the US……….OH hell yeah big time…..bit we should be used to it, we don’t have to like it but we’re not surprised by it.
@ 4 Ted, the station was WDLJ 97.5 FM, its a small independent station, typical “Classic Rock” format. Above and Beyond was the feature song for a bit titled Eric’s New Music Minute, a weekly segment with a new song from various artists, so it probably will not appear in their rotation. However their late afternoon DJ is a DP fan and plays songs from Perpendicular and Bananas often, and they do stream online.

@ 14: I was really looking forward to Now What?!. I don’t know how often I got goosebumps when I listenend to my favourite track “Uncommon Man”, although I could hear Ronnie Dio sing “Kill the king” in my head every time Ian sings “It’s good to be king”. I still don’t really like the lyrics on this one but everything else is fantastic – especially the riff and middle section. I can’t wait for the live version to be recorded. It’ll blow everybody’s socks off if they did that one with orchestra.

#6 Well of course. But this time they did a good job of promoting a good record. In the past, you could blame lackluster recordings or half butt promotional efforts.

This is not the case with Now What!? It has done well overseas because of these two factors. All you can do is your best…and I think the boys and management have done their part. Of course the failure to break in the states means I will be waiting a long time to see any of this stuff performed live in the states…

I went twice in Sydney & George Harrison jammed with them at one of those gigs, Lucille was the song, a wonderful moment in time. That is on youtube that jam, wow did that bring back some memories! I like THOBL album more than PS, I think it sounds more together song wise, a more serious effort involved perhaps. PS is half great & half slapped together sort of sounding to me! Maybe resting on their past laurels? It is a shame that THOBL sounds classic 80′s as al says @ – 4! It should be remixed etc, but I fear it may never happen as it seems to be not a favourite album for the members involved, for different reasons no doubt! But a few of the classic bands from the early 70′s experimented with different sounds etc in the 80′s, it happened to many artists the more I actually think about it.
Spanish Archer, Bad Attitude, Call of the Wild, Mad Dog, The Unwritten Law, Black & White, Spanish Archer, Strangeways, Dead or Alive! Great songs, superb vocal melodies, wonderful Blackmore stuff, classic MK2 Purple in so many ways, we just wish it’s sound was better! Not to worry, I prefer to have quality songs etc with poor production, than great production with poor songs! Cheers!

MacGregor, I agree that HOBL is an excellent LP but Ritchie has a great solo on HLW and also a very good solo on MD. Yeah maybe not the best songs on the record, that probably would be Bad Attitude or the Spanish Archer. All in all I think the reunion had its best moments with the Perfect Strangers album and tour. It was a sellout tour and everyone was actually smiling. Yes Blackmore smiling. For some reason the mix on HOBL was recorded very low. Put on Down to Earth and then listen to HOBL The recording on HOBL needs a huge increase in the GAIN (volume) department. Roger was amazing on the recording of DTE, not sure what happened during HOBL. Different studio maybe?

Actually Mitzi Dupree is one of my favourites from HOBL. It has a structure, a nice riff, a proper vocal melody and a triff solo from Richie. One of DPs tracks that seems written rather than just jammed into existence (although probably wasn’t).

@13 totally get your point,my feeling are the same,but I guess a reasoning for non liking the album is fair.We can compare this one with their latest albums,Rapture….Bananas,Abandon,Purpendicular.I still think Purpendicular is the best album,and I’m not going to compare this album which itself is a quality one with Perfect Strangers.that belongs to different line up with Ritchie and of course Jon.You are right about the “Raw and snotty rock n roll ” I don’t see it either.I guess fans will always be split in camps about times and albums and periods.I,myself I am open to every period if the music has some quality in it.

@ 1 that album is ruined by the “contemporary sound” of the 80′s,too much synth and not so much Hammond Organ signature in it.Dead OR Alive has some organ and the rest not so much,too polished.I hope for a remastering and a Re Mix,if Roger gets involved of course,but I doubt it if that is going to happen any time soon.you are right,Mitzi is an ok song,has its momens ,but not their greatest one by a mile.Strangeways is their masterpiece in the album.and dare I say better than every song from Perfect Strangers,but hey don’t kill me for that lol

Despite putting out a very strong album,,,,despite a great video…despite the positive critical and popular reception Now What?! is getting everywhere but you know where, Purple continues to be largely ignored. Sure they got a cover story on Classic Rock magazine, but that’s it that’s all. Look at the buzz that Sabbath is getting already and their album hasn’t even hit the shelves yet….they have already been on the covers of Guitar Magazine, MOJO, and got a big piece in the International Herald Tribune newspaper this past weekend.

Typical anti-Purple bias once again folks, largely at the hands of the US music media machine…..The album has been out over a month now and nary a peep in the U.S. music press…..nothing at all yet in Rollingstone magazine….surprise! surprise! This is why Purple will never ever get a fair shake at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Who is or what is to blame this time….definitely not the band or their management or record company…these guys have been putting huge sweat equity into promoting the album this time…..I stand by my position…there is definitely an anti-Deep Purple bias in the music media, particularly in the USA.

Mitzi Dupree is an ok song, the second weak song off THOBL album. Hard Lovin Woman is really weak, the rest of the album is great, the best MK2 reunion album by a mile! You have to love the ping pong balls! I haven’t played ping pong for a decade or two.
I actually only threw out my old table a month or so back, it was a bit warped being in storage for all those years!
Now I wonder what sort of table Mitzi had? Classic!

Other than Uncommon Man, Hell to Pay, and All the Time in the World this is an excellent CD. No extra tracks on my CD but those first three songs are fantastic. Don Airey is splendid on this CD. The interchanging leads between him and Morse are damn ass good. Listened to this album three times straight from Long Beach to Fresno. Glover and Ian Paice are SOLID and smooth as silk. This is the best Purple album since Battle Rages On, not an epic CD like In Rock or Machine Head but easily their best of the Morse Era. Thank you for an excellent CD.

What a crappy discussion. TMIB contribution to purple made songs to the set list from every album he was on, and great ones to. Except maybe slaves and masters and they still stays in the set most of them. More than you can say after his departure, So let the man be, and do what he wants. I rather listen to his classical guitar tunes and the electric ones rather than non at all even if they only might be 10% of the material. He comes around when HE wants to or not at all. I as one of us would love to hear him do some rock again but what the fuck I would like to hear him with Jon again and Paicy never gonna happened.
Maybe to take it even futher down the road of silly whishes replace Joe in BCC and take in DC on vocals, bann Hughes from singin leads more than maybe 2 songs and force him take his natural roll behind DC. AND GIVE SHERNIAN A LOT MOORE SPACE. call it Something else than BCC and give us a good album. Just an album for the love of music classical bluesy rocky progressive stuff.
But still let the songwriting have first priority. not like the BCC albums that sounds the same song all over.

“No! Not again !!!” That’s all I can think as I listen to this…thing. And it has nothing to do with personal likes or dislikes. I saw RB twice in the eighties, with DP, and I know by heart all he played since the beginning. And I really CANNOT listen this stuff, always the same, nothing special or new, it hurts so much! And that voice…
Why not composing for tv commercials? At least it would be something new…and shorter!!!

My thoughts exactly. It reminds me of what a Stevie Nicks and Ritchie Blackmore collaboration would sound like.

I tried watching a Blackmore’s Night concert video on Youtube after watching he video clip above and found myself fastforwarding to the parts where RB was playing his Strat. I can only handle the novelty of Blackmore’s Nights in small doses.

He can obviously still play well, but I want to see him smash his guitars and blow up his amps again. It’s too bad he burned his bridges with his former Purple bandmates. In a perfect world, Deep Purple would have both, Blackmore and Steve Morse together, sort of like the Yes Union collaboration from the early 1990′s.

I saw them in Munich last fall. During that concert Gillan was doing very very well also with the old songs. (he’s not in his twenties anymore so the expectations need to be set accordingly, no more Child in time;-) He did much better than I had heard as far back as the Purpendicular tour. Personally I attribute that to a concious effort by the band to introduce more+longer solos and interplay inside the songs, giving the vocal chords some rest during the songs and not just between the same. (May of course also have helped, that the entire band was upbeat, being satisfied with the production and performance of/on the new CD….)

Deep Purple had no interest and in fact resisted the idea of playing anything from the new album due to the internet issue and the fact that new numbers would cut into the playlist. However, the band gets a big round of kudos for doing not just one–but THREE numbers from the new album.

The first two worked well despite being very “safe” versions that closely followed the studio cuts. “Body Line” sounded under-rehearsed and the band struggled a bit perhaps in places. Roger Glover always says every album should have a shuffle–but that does not necessarily translate to a set list!

Still, a great effort and one that should pay dividends in the future supporting an album that may turn out to be the most successful in years. The inclusion of new numbers should connote an enthusiasm on their part over the new product.

Expect to see these new numbers shift. “Hell to Pay” is perfect as a vehicle for extended soloing (as “Space Truckin’” was in the early years) as well as audience participation, even if I personally do not care for that kind of thing. The hardcore fans would like to see an extended, improvised “Uncommon Man”. Any number of songs from the new album have the potential to become instant classics. Ezrin commented that Deep Purple is capable of playing them all live. Shifting them from show to show is likely.

I have played Now What?! over and over for weeks and it has not lost its luster. I got to bed with a tune in my head and wake up with it in the morning. It is great to see the band taking these numbers to the stage. They should garner greater and greater applause as attendees become more familiar with the album.

I haven’t been this excited since Abandon. I even had a dream that I met Gillan again! It is a good time to be a Deep Purple fan.

I’m incredibly dissapointed. For a band that put out such an incredible album, these songs sound weak and under rehearsed live. The band doesn’t sound like they know the material, like they’re struggling to get through it. And for Gillan,whose voice is finally within it’s proper range, there’s no excuse for him to struggling with vocals that are in his lower to upper mid range. It sounds like he can’t sing anymore here.

@4 Mc Gregor I totally agree with you,he is totally the business guy in that segment,that is the problem with our music business,it is all about the flash and spending millions on videos,with no substance at all,and God Forbid is you listen their albums….
@5 just cannot get enough of good stuff man, lol but I can live with the new record for a while! After The Rapture …..which was kind of let down in terms of production and sound,even though I really tried to like it,and I still like a couple of songs,we kind of gave up on the fact that a producer will capture their “live” feel,spontaneity,and put the Deep in Purple again!.They will do whatever they feel like doing anyway.it is not easy to cut a record,considering the fact,they like to tour and play concerts.Stones have sold out long time in bad way,but that it is my humble opinion.

I got to say, apart from Vincent Price, which i think is one of the best songs from the album, i’m a bit dissapointed about the songs they choose to play.
Although they al sounded great, i expected a little more.
They have killer album, with more then a few great rockers, tho they choose to play Body Line and All the Time in the World, which aren’t bad songs don’t get me wrong, but are far from the highlights from the new album in my opinion.
Same goes for Above and Beyond the night after.

Where are songs like Hell to Pay, or Uncommon Man, and i would love to hear Weirdistan live, and Aprs Vous can go on for the new Speed Kind with some kick ass Morse and Airey Guitar/Organ dueling.

If you ask me, tey don’t even make the best out of the songs their new album has to offer, kind of a let down if you ask me.

Gillan doing an Ozzy, reading the new song lyrics off the stage. I like Vincent Price & Bodyline, they should just play the complete new album & a handful of previous material! They need to leave Hard Lovin Man out, Gillan has trouble with that vocal, it is after all a tour de force vocally from his glory days! Lazy sounds a bit out to me, but maybe I am used to Blackmore & Lord nailing! Play more new material guys!

I always said I ll buy the album when it is time. For me that is..
I ll even pay the full price for a vinyl, harder to get those second hand or at lowered prices.

So, NO STEAL THERE, BRO.

Usually they always resorted to AHOY in Rotterdam but since Amsterdam opened the Heineken Music Hall they skip Rotterdam.

It must be the hookers and drugs because Ian Gillan said he does not do sightseeing since seeing something once is enough.

Since the Morse era there was always ” something” I could enjoy, but more and more it became not enough.

You once told you did good for yourself.
So how come you can’t muster, LIKE A REAL FAN WITH A BIG MOUTH, the trip to Europe or somewhere else?!

I even went twice to London 99 way back. Did you?
Did you see them at that open air festival playing several Abandon songs?
Did you see them in 87? Four times? Even travelled to Nurnberg by bus which was hell, but I did it.
Travelled abroad twice to see the S & M show in Paris and Bruxelles. Did you?
Saw the TBRO tour three times, even went to Germany again for a show.

I met Rasmus outside the hall who said he saw about the whole tour with his truck. Great idea! Did you?

I should have at least done some more TBRO shows, but money always being tight and not knowing they would split again so soon I choise to postpone.

I should have seen them in Germany and or Italy in 88 but I was too passive, thinking they would come again to Rotterdam.
Bad choice indeed, because they were in great shape in 88.

I almost travelled to the south of France to see them in 1996, but I fell ill after a bad working experience on a vineyard, more north.
But even then I saw them in Rotterdam, earlier that year.
In the same period I saw Rainbow in Rotterdam, which was sold out I believe.

Such a contrast with the not sold out clubcircuit gigs by Ian Gillan during the Naked Thunder Tour. I should seen him with the TOOLBOX tour, I love the album, but again I skipped because he did not come here.
But I read in Darker Than Blue mags of way back the Toolbox tourshows were again half empty.

Me, not mustering the dough?!
It got me broke, man.

So, show me, Tracy.

Bob Ezrin said in that KLOS interview that they can play the whole new album, and I know they will, but for now we are too acostumed to the sound of this fantastic new record, so when I listened to this new live songs I felt like that something was missing.

Obviously it’s not the same sound, but also you can see that they are kind of nervous when playing the new stuff, just check them playing All the Time in the World and the amazing change when they start The Well Dressed Guitar or playing Perfect Strangers “just like back in home again”. . . . Gillan looked too distracted looking were to read the lyrics, well it was a festival and anything can happen. . . .

I also found that since they played three new songs, were mainly Morse guitar songs, none were Airey Hammond songs (Apres Vous, Hell to Pay, A Simple Song or Uncommon Man), why? hard to understand. . . . By the way, Airey was too low on the mix.

To me, Vincent Price was a real good performance and it looks like it’s going to be regular on the setlist, maybe that’s why Roger Glover never looked happier playing a song!

Anyway, I Love it!, It’s a nice start and it’s pretty clear that the answer to the question Now What?! it’s simple (as always it is), practice until become natural, and that will happen sooner than you think. . .

Vincent Price was hit with NW!? Good hard rock song, great instrumetal solutions, powerful sound, the final scream Ian can be a problem in live performances, can he still!?
Body Line .. by guitar phrase recalls the Walk This Way ..Aerosmith
jazz-funky atmosphere, I liked him immediately on first listen
miraculous Morse-Airey .. and answer why Paice and Glover is one of the best rhythm section in rock, and Ian good singing, by clip seems to not know a
word,and wheat from the floor
Body Line will nicely fit in concert blues- funky corner: Lazy, No One Came, Body Line
A new set list at least 50% -50% of old and new materials / NW!? / /
NW!? fantastic, exciting album, no weak moments
Ian Gillan to all new lyrics to memorize…. QUICKLY !!!

Both those songs sounded Incredible live. GILLAN’S voice was also incredibly powerful on the new songs. I was going to ask how is it he sounds better on the new songs then he does on the old but I just answered my own question which I will share with you.

The reason Gillan sounds so good on the new stuff is he’s singing with in he range. Unfortunatley The older songs from 30 – 40 years ago are now way out of his range.

That shuffle PAICEY’S doing on the Hi-Hat. He does it with incredible ease. I tried it at Practice tonight and my right now almost fell off.
