@Tracy -what are you waiting for, Christmas or something? But then who knows, you might not rave about FC. I mean even sometimes I want to put on Yes instead, and even some other bands, but I like it after all this time and a lot of repeats. I would like to see where they can take it, but if this is all, it's better than nothing.

Come on Little Al, lets not start this absurd arguement once again. Ritchie is doing his thing, as always,if we like it or not. If one wanted to, based on the lack of new material, one could use the same, lame, ridiculous comment about the current line up. Just given it a break, what's done is done. No more useless comments. This means you too Zero.

Probabaly not much different to 'Paris Moon' a few years back. I like Blackmore's work but I feel he needs to up the angst a little. The songwriting/style has become very formulaic.

Mainly for me, the fact that the statement was made about the recording session with Purple in Germany was the highlight of this interview. Guitar tech I'm not. Though I'm sure there is importance overall, the Purple reference is the most significant, no matter how slight....

Cheers

Too bad there are still the chronic whiners frequenting this site. A stark reminder as to where the lack of new records from Purple have gone. What's the point when they are constantly bombarded by the hecklers here at THS?

I did not miss the point at all Tracey, read the first line of my posting! I said that I did not agree with Ken either! Following that you state regarding the Night vocal rave that 'neither of them are in Deep Purple'. We know that, but my point to that was, surely you are not implying that Blackmore should not be "flogging" Purple songs? Or as I also stated, past members have & will play the odd song, it doesn't matter who is singing or on bass guitar or guitar or drums etc, it isn't flogging at all! It depends if people like it or not. By the way, which songs did Gillan write? Are you talking lyrics or the song itself? Cheers.

What a shame Lord didn't pull the Original MK2 boys into the studio for this iconic release since they performed the live show. Will be interesting anyway. Especially is Malmsteen tones down the shredding.

MacGregor you missed the point. Kenn was ragging Gillan stating he is 'flogging' Blackmore tracks for a living. My point was that those tracks are Gillan tracks. HE sang them originally and sings them now, and he is the singer for Deep Purple. Those tracks are Deep Purple songs that HE wrote and sang then and now. Blackmore left the band. The Band didn't leave him. The songs are Deep Purple songs. Ragging Gillan for singing HIS own songs is ludicrous.

As for the ex-Purple members playing Purple songs? I have no problem with that. Hell, I think it's great if Dolly Parton sings Purple songs. Bitching about Deep Purple playing Deep Purple songs makes no sense what so ever.

Cheers

Those tracks are Deep Purple songs that HE wrote and sang then and now. Blackmore left the band. The Band didn’t leave him. The songs are Deep Purple songs. Ragging Gillan for singing HIS own songs is ludicrous.

As for the ex-Purple members playing Purple songs? I have no problem with that. Hell, I think it’s great if Dolly Parton sings Purple songs. Bitching about Deep Purple playing Deep Purple songs makes no sense what so ever.

Cheers

Whilst I don't agree with Ken @ 7 either, I am curious as to Tracey @ 8 comments? Blackmore is entitled to play tracks he was associated with in Purple, & I agree that in regards to Candice Night, I will never listen to her trying to sing either Purple or Rainbow tracks. But seriously, Blackmore, Lord, Coverdale or as we have seen recently Hughes also, can & do perform Purple songs if they please, with whoever the supporting musicians may be, that are performing with them at that particular time! Although one has to wonder why Hughes continues to butcher 'Mistreated', as according to the songwriting credits, Blackmore & Coverdale wrote that classic track, & Hughes' vocal just doesn't suit that song at all, & doesn't suit Dio's songs either! Gillan's voice also will not suit Dio's songs either, but that is just my personal opinion! This is what happens in tribute albums or concerts & I will not be listening to it, just the same as I do not listen to other tributes! There is nothing like the original, forget the rest! R.I.P RJD. Cheers.

I don't know where to post it: "Jon Lord news - some tremendous news with Jon's concerto recording having been completed with a fantastic range of musicians including Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Morse. Mixing will be completed late May and all is on track for an early September 2012 release. This is the first studio recording of the 1969 Jon Lord /Deep Purple 'Concert For Group & Orchestra'."

Not sure what your point is here LRT. Both the music and the performer make a good live act. Well Played Great Music is the key though.

RF @11,

Steve Vai would be all over it as far as I'm concerned, though I can't say actually since I haven't heard FC yet. Just a general opinion based on Vai's technical ability...as with Satch.

Cheers

Repo Depot didn't release anything. This track has never been heard beyond pre-release ears. @Priest, the four tracks that wound up on Dreamcatcher were written by them, but recorded with the line-up used on the album. Four different tracks on Dreamcatcher were originally recorded with another line-up, coincidentally friends from my hometown and Pat Regan, one of them now a member of Kiss.(I have that extremely rare demo)

Flying Colors are a amazing band. As #3 points out Steve will not have time to promote this Album. I suggest FC pull a ChickenFoot. They replaced Chad Smith when he had to tour with the RHCP. Replace Steve with Joe Satriani. That is not a bad choice. Why not? I would go. Joe Satriani is the only person who could pull it off.

@8 Tracy,

I saw him at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park back in March. That was the first thing I thought when he walked on stage. Something is amiss. Hopefully it's just diet and no beer. He was the usual great that night....

Peace,

Something with that video, could not open it.

Thanx anyway.

Here just 1 YT from yesterdays gig in Belgium.
Sounds a bit tame to me and Doogie gives a weak performance.
I was already expecting that, stayed home.

LRT I would have to disagree with you regarding the lack of difference Ezrin could make. The producer obviously is a powerful piece of the puzzle. Look how bad the sound is on Bananas and ROTD. You are being quite inconsistent here. You have been one of the loudest voices here regarding how Bradford's work on those 2 albums was terrible and made it clear his involvement was a bad choice. Well then obviously a Proper producer should have just as much an effect to the positive side of the situation. Plus Ezrin is a sharp individual whom has a lot of ideas and will offer much input regarding a direction and package. Bradford wasn't even a Rock Band producer. Ezrin is one of if not the best there is and his presence will be felt by the band. Looking for a hit? Nah. He is smart in taking them on and probably taking part in the historic last Deep Purple album which will also push them into the R&R HoF next year. He has that much clout. Not a bad thing to have your repertoire....Deep Purple's producer during their Farewell Tour. Hell, if they do it right and he makes as big a difference as I think he will, they might decide to stick around and do a back to back album....(something they should do anyway).

Cheers

Ken come on man. Gillan has been 'flogging' Gillan tracks. In case you haven't heard, he is now and was then the singer of those tracks. They are his to sing. He is still a member of Deep Purple. The 'flogger' would be Candice Night whom from time to time sings Purple songs at Blackmore's Night shows. Neither of them are in Deep Purple . One of which never was. Who's flogging what? So please if you are going to rag somebody, use some sense.

Personally I'd like to hear Neon Knights, The Last in Line or Heaven and Hell....

Ian Gillan – She Thinks It’s A Crime could be a 'Magic' out take...or a Gillan-Rakintzis one...or one of the two rare studio songs from Naked Thunder (which now disappeared from you tube)...I can't remember when and were I read this title...

sad production, uneuseful to me..very poor, without immagination..
with so many artists in this big "family" they could get off a better release..
Just to dream to listen for ex. Toni Iommi playing his dark version of "Wasted Sunset"..wow...or listen martin playing "Zero The Hero"..
I think it is nice to reinvent some old stuff in new version...

sorry for my grammatic..

Once again I have to laugh at the self-centered complainers here. Yes, I too have all of these tracks in one form or another. Most of us 'Hard Core' collectors do of course. But many of these songs will be new to most of the public that doesn't collect 'all things Purple'. There are some very obscure and hard to find tracks on this offering that will and should be of interest to those whom haven't gotten their hands on or heard them before. With all due respects, this is quite a diverse and well selected bunch of oddities that together will be a very enjoyable mix and well worth the listen.

Cheers

PP:

FYI for ya...Schenker appears on the latest 2 episodes of 'That Metal Show'. He is the guest guitar player on last weeks episode and the actual interview guest on this weeks episode. Man he looks frail. Makes Gillan look like the Hulk.

I doubt it though after the original reunion of Black Sabbath and plans of a new Deep Purple record,A new material betw Iommi-Gillan would be possible.I am only interested in one song or jam,and outtake from Purpendicular session DEEP PIMPLE,the rest of the music is just old and not new.

This is not a "Who Cares" album. Just a few songs from "here and there" put on a CD. Better if it was a DVD. I might buy it, because Gillan was singing great when most of these tracks was recorded. Just like Who Cares tracks. Why not in DP these years? I Dont understand.

I never thought it would happen but.......

I m probably saving my money to see FC live, if they come close enough, instead of DP.

Then again, the so called LAST HURRAH might tempt me if the setlist and new album are exiting(If that is still possible : ( .... )enough.

I skipped Michael Schenker. Cant stand Doogies Biff Bifford(Or what whas the guy from SAXON called..?)voice.

Judging from the YouTubes ; The band rocks in a excellent way regarding the instrumental side of things.
So maybe I ll try to see Tilburg anyway(....)

Right now I m suffering from sinesitus again, big pain impulses on my skull and in the ear, so that is not really a good start.

Blackmores Night in Nijmeegen then....

I saw the old man around 2003, I think, and he is getting on in years.
So I thought......

But hell, the tickets are 50 Euro´s!!!

Can someone tell me if it is true that the setlist might be based around Candy´s soloalbum, that would be uhhhhhhh..........not tempting.

It is gonna be a cheap year perhaps.

I d love to see Y and T in october.
Not sure, only Meniketti as an original member now.
And playing the worst songs of FACEMELTER does not help.

I m already dearly missing the well beloved Phil Kennemore on bass, a better setlist might help.

Indeed a very very talented bunch of guys with a distinctive taste and actually there's a very creative thing going on. I didn't pay much attention till recently. But I've to say that the singing, although it's done fairly well, isn't my cup of tea - the bass playing on the other hand totally is and I like the sound of those Music Man (Stingray) bass guitars. Cool and interesting side project. Thumbs up.

With Purple putting out a new and most likely final album, they will tour it heavily. There won't be much time for Flying Colors. Steve should open Purple shows with Flying Colors as the opening act. Then he could promote both....

Rory Gallaghers music is always cool, Roberto.

But I supposse it was a original REPO DEPO song.
Yesterday a friend of mine said that illan released those 4 RD songs some time ago. I did not know that or if that's correct that it was released.

As far as I know some was re used for DREAMCATCHER and later on Gillan's Inn.

First when I saw the "New Album"release I felt exited.
Although I also thought : Hey, is Iommi recovering that fast?

I m dissappointed about this new album. Most of it I already have.
But ok, it is for a good cause, so.......

It now is a mix of rarities and some plain studio stuff.
Might have been more fun to see Tony Martin doing CHANGES, etc.

What is this song "She Thinks It Is a Crime"?

Some bits and pieces in the Classic Rock text look weird.

Release dates? It was already released, that WHO CARES single!

Talking about recording and writing in 6 weeks?

Did they not already have written tons of stuff since 2006?
In RECORD COLLECTOR Steve says that Gillan writes all the time, blablabla.

And or a typo or Gillans state of mind :

I dont think BORN AGAIN was done shortly after the Perfect Stranges tour.

Maybe I misundersood and he is referring to the moment he already came to grips with the Sab thing, the production et all.
In my recollection his view on it all stayed persistent through many years.....

Did not know that DICK PIMPLE was Ritchie's idea.

Although I read the "thing" around 1984 on a envelope I received from the Rainbow FanClan.
But That is a complete other story(....)

Maybe FC won't be as long a project as some people think. Morse posted this on Facebook yesterday;

"Well, everybody, we finally did find some dates to do a Flying Colors
Tour! We're starting in L.A. (where my son's band 'New World Martyr'
will open), then right over to New York City, then straight to Europe
for a couple of weeks. This may be the only chance to see Flying
Colors, so find an excuse to travel if you are not near us!"

T @ 5 says it all regarding the Mark 1 days. Paice's drumming on those early albums is superb, especially "The Book Of Taliesyn" album, & yes Emmeretta, snappy indeed & tasteful! What about the opening to 'Fireball' & of course Mark 2 & Mark 3 were awesome also, the song 'Burn' a big reason I took up playing the drums, his playing had a massive influence on me! He was so fast & precise in his delivery, his snare & kick work is second to none!

I understood Gillan-Ioomi were going to release "a new album" instead of just a "new compilation"...any plan?

I am not a drummer, so take my comments with a grain of salt--for what they are worth.

Certainly, rock music is awash with drummers who play in a much more fancy manner than Ian Paice--from the guy who uses a punching bag to rigs in a cage that spin up and down. But anyone who has played in a band knows that one of the most important and primary parts of a group is a solid foundation--both the drummer and the bass player--who often give a lot of inspiration and drive into pushing the more noticeable players. In addition, good drummers are hard to find.

Thus Ian Paice is not into theatrics but is a solid drummer giving some of the strongest bottom ends in rock music. In particular, I like the way he uses the cymbals as rhythm instead of mere sparkle and punctuation ("Perfect Strangers") and often as "riffs" ("Woman From Tokyo").

When soloing, a lot of the kids try to throw everything into it--including the proverbial kitchen sink. Ian Paice, on the other hand, uses dynamics to get a contrast in the playing. Melodic instruments are capable of a lot more possibilities, while drums are basically flat. That means dynamics is the way to get to the lows and highs that other instruments get from pitch. Ian Paice goes slow...then fast...all out...then soft...then loud. In the middle of a solo, he falls into a jazz rhythm, playing straight for a few bars before going back into the craziness--and there is always a resolution at the end. His playing is very musical. These are characterstics of a master. Favorite solo: 3rd Movement of the 'Concerto'. More cowbell!

It is very interesting that in the video he mentioned going back to some of the simpler components. In my opinion, some of his most interesting drumming was back in the Mark I days. Who in the world ends a song with a drum solo ("Emmeretta")? He was all over that little kit. His playing was snappy and imaginative--because it had to be. It was very percussive--like smacking around on trash cans. In addition, he was into all that experimentation with exotic rhythms and percussion instruments of every kind ("Chasing Shadows," "The Shield").

Paicey likes to "mouth" what he is playing. This is very common among musicians. The motor center in the brain for the hands is close to that which controls speech. If you watch closely, his mouth tends to "play" what his hands are doing. A lot of guitarists cannot help but do this (Santana)--just an interesting psychological aspect of playing an instrument. Fortunately, I am immune... >:-)

Ian Paice--jeez. Outstanding. What a drummer should be. My nephew is learning the drums. I will have to pass along some videos of how it is done.

Classic Rock Magazine states that it appears Purple is winding down. Morse has alluded to the fact that they are obviously not getting any younger and that 'this album needs to be special'. He took the words right out of my mouth.

Folks, we are at the end of the 'Purple Rainbow' it seems. It's been a loooooong and awesome run. I am glad they are taking this serious and putting Bob Ezrin at the helm for their final record. This album and tour in promotion of it should be balls to the wall and no holds barred. As a matter of fact, I would love to see Ezrin re-produce and re-package 'Bananas' and 'Rapture of the Deep' with proper production.

Though I am looking forward to this album, I am not looking forward to the fact they are most likely done soon afterwards. Yes I know it has to happen eventually, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. I'm 55 years old. Been a fan since I was 12. This band has been a part of over 3 quarters of my life. Alice Cooper also. 2 of my favorite bands. I think it's perfect that Bob Ezrin has been chosen for this final vinyl. I also believe that Purple will be nominated and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year as a result. "Welcome to My Machinehead".

Cheers

Good to at last have positive signs and yet as per Jim's comment, seems like a swansong album- well, it had to happen sooner or later, so let's hope it is a memorable one with a new classic or two on it....

I agree. But if so they can say the show ended things on their terms. The recent Canadian tour found them in great form (helped perhaps by the relatively smaller and more intimate venues). And one can only hope the new album (and hopefully associated tour) will have them go out on a high note (NPI).

After forty plus years of excellent music and entertainment, I they've earned a break. Tonics in the sun.

To paraphrase Steve, everybody realizes the Purps can't go on forever. If the end is nigh, let's hope for a rockin' album to close the book.No Girls Like That or MTV-type sing-a-long silliness.Hopefully,Ezrin will get them in a proper studio and do some pre-production work before he hits "Record".

Steve Morse was interviewed for issue 9 of iGuitar magazine in which he talks about his influences, the different bands he has been involved in throughout his career (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple); why he quit music twice and what made him love it again; his equipment and how Deep Purple became his family after the turmoil he was going through at the time. Steve also tells a story about how he used to wear a wig to school to cover up his long hair until they introduced a "no-wig" dress code.

@ 1: They can't carry on forever. With Gillan turning 67 this year I guess it's time for him to quit this kind of music after the following album and tour. The other lads won't carry on without him. They've tried over the years but it always came to the point where they realised that there's just one singer for Deep Purple - and that's Gillan. He's the soul of the band. I just hope that their last studio effort will blow us all away!

Well in some sense the end has to be nigh given the combined age of the band is greater than 300 years. Surely, SM is only stating the obvious when he says "we're not going to do this forever"

I'm not convinced any reading between the lines is necessary

Let's be very honest. They can't do the same thing forever as they did the last 7 years or so; just doing their 'greatest hits' thing and come back for more of the same. I love the band, I love all the DP musicians past and present, and I love almost all the solo output from every DP member and all their projects, but as a real fan I want a proper new DP album. They are right if they want to end in a way they deserve to be remembered as the greatest rock band ever. They should take the time to do it the right way and make it big. All the fans are waiting for that one majestic rock album that they still have in the can. Please pull out all the stops and make the Purple monster roar as loud as it can. One more album with only classic Purple tracks and one more major world tour with the musicians at their very best. And to finish if off the one special big show with all DP members past and present to end with a big bang. I think there are so many fans in the world waiting for that one occasion to come. 2013 is the year of the 45 th anniversary of Deep Purple and this should be the right time to celebrate things in the best possible way.

Found this on 1 of the DP related blogspots.

Knew about it but somehow never picked it up.

Enjoyable album.

IMHO espescially if you like "the feel" of The Butterfy Ball.
Inspiration for said album?

Notice ex ex DP split group guests like Cozy Powell and Bernie Marsden..

There are some issues I have... for one, how the hell can a producer be paid to just show up and make any difference? This band hired Bradford and he almost made strides on the first one. I recall wondering if they hired him because he has the same initials as their former engineer who keeps on getting confused as their former producer when every album they made in the 70s was *produced* by them. I mean did Ezrin get approached and sign once he had a miraculous vision as to how a band in their twilight are going to have a hit record? I'm doubting it, I feel no concept to this, but hope there is already one. Bradford straight up told them that if they were not interested in recording a hit record that he wasn't interested in producing them. Well, telling the freaking label to promote the thing with half the nuts it takes comes to mind, can a producer not do that much, sheesh! I just don't see him coming up with anything to bring but a refinement of the sound. I see him showing up and trying to make something out of whatever they've got. That is not going to exactly cut it, talk about a waste of money, why don't they just cut a DVD of a run thru performance of the entire album like Metallica did on St.Anger. Do something fair with the money!!!!!!! Most of the online fans seem to want to see them perform this line-up's tunes only, they would get their wish this one time. Do something spectacular, forget about being contemporary and do away with some of the easy listening stylings that have crept in. And if Ezrin suggests wind chimes he is no better than Bradford, ha ha.

That is where reading between the lines will always get you. (what you're fishing for, not much else) The end is physically near, is it not? Who can do this into their 70s? They've been critically dismissed by the media who somehow seemed threatened by their level of talent since they reunited, so in the grand scheme of things they were washed up before then and just considered old by non believers. They could've packed it in 10 years ago and I would be fne about it, but obviously there isn't much money in that.

If nothing else Jim,the end of Steve Morse as Purple's guitar player certainly sounds imminent. He's got a new band that is creative and seems to be making a few waves. Steve looks so bored on the latest Montreux DVD.

The end is going to come sooner or later, but it sounds to me like Steve and hopefully the others want this album to be awesome. There will certainly be a tour so I would strongly suggest if YOU ARE A FAN OF DEEP PURPLE to go see them if you can. When it is over I will have nothing but good memories of all the shows I have seen and I hope there is at least 1 more.
cheers

Not really. It could happen, of course. But at this stage in their career they don't plan anything too precisely, they take it as it comes. They're gonna do it, then...who knows, they could enjoy it making another one in a year ot two...I don't think they 'plan' to produce a final album as such.

Fantastic news!

Purple have produced some great songs with Morse and Airey but imho haven't done a really fab album since Purpendicular. They should've done this years ago!

Blackmore reuniting with Gillan is just as much out of sight as AC/DC reuniting with Bon Scott (RIP). Could someone arrange that please ??? I'd swap Glen Hughes for him. He'll "BURN" well... :-D

Which song Gillan will sing? 'Wonderworld' or 'Never more'? 'Kill the king' or 'Gates of Babylon'? Those would be appreciated choices anyway...I hope Ian will not sing Black Sabbath Dio era songs...I've just heard them...That would be the same for 'Sitting in a dream'...Yes, considering his nowdays way of singing, the two above mentioned Elf's songas would probably be the best ones for him in my opinion...

I suppose I slipped twice.
First of all, I suddenly recall seeing it before.
More importantly, 1996 was release year, or was it 1995?, 25 years later would have been appropriate......

Damn, that was 2011......

Oh yeah right, I bought that lame reissue not a long time ago.
Very basic, so I was very dissappointed.

I wish I hunted down a copy of Rainbow's picture disc, only sold at Record Store Day, last weekend.

I get different information on where it was sold.

Fingers crossed, that a friend of mine can get his hands on a copy for me as a late Birthday gift : )

What is it with that "dictionairy" thing?
Are you implying some of us are retarded?

Btw, I think that a starved audience might be tempted to eat anything served.
But , maybe excluding you and your friends, most of us are not starved.

Yeah, as afar as you can read.

Take a better look at my posts all over the board.

And I did mention Flying Colors.

Btw, what we are doing here is talking among others that are more or less "alike".

It happens that things get repeated, partly due to repetition of the subjects.

Btw, you re selecting me out of others that are sort of saying the same........

That is repetition as well as far as I m concerned.

"I can speak for the company I keep when I say that Abandon, Baanas and Rapture of the Deep are brilliant pieces of driven innovation. "

Perhaps it's time for some new friends.
For the most part those were weak albums and hardly innovative. (???)

I don't see Bob Ezrin being right for Purple. He's more into a stage-drama type of act. I'd much rather see Purple just retire to solo projects at this point - the band burned up the last of their inspiration onf Purpendicular.

The RnR Allstars' organisation could perhaps use some advice from Iron Maiden's management; they've successfully toured South America several times in recent years - and even managed to produce films of the events. Go figure.

Sorry, appearantly something has been done about the BN news.Kudo´s.

I did not keep the link to the JLT interview, let alone my reply.

1 thingy :

Joe is saying he resents th song Since You've Been Gone on the DTE album. That he hates the `clappingpart`.

Weird.

He sang it ith OTR and everyone seems to think he was BOSS in that band.

How about his friendship with Bonnet, touring with him et all.....
He talks very negatively about the DTE album in general as well.

Talking about clapping.....What about the song NO RELEASE then, Joe
Maybe it was Roger that enjoyed the clapping, he was walking in a disco outfit way back as well. Not really looking the rockpart, Roger.
And then saying that Graham did not look the part.

Blackmore, on the other hand, said that Joe did something good with a throw away song,NO RELEASE, that is.
I wish I had albums full of sngs like that!!!

So much fordistorting the truth and knit picking and........

I often try to think about what should be the songs placed ona BEST OF cd by MK I.

I never come to a solution with it.

In the end I always play the whole shebang they made in one row.

Opinion time again, MK 1 best ongs easily outshine most material they made since 1998.

Start with April, inbetween classics like Mandrake Root and The Adress, Wring That Neck, Lalena, Anthem, and so on and end it with Hush, Blind, Chasing Shadows, and so on.

Dismissing the so called covers leaves enough great original songs.

Writing off MK as just some jurking and messing around~
COME ON!!!!

Well said Svante (and Gert), it's almost like some people *cough* purple priest *cough* have an agenda and pick for faults in everything DP. I don't understand what pleasure they derive from spending so much time on a Deep Purple website when they seemingly don't like the band anymore (they're not going to get any news other than that regarding current lineup and projects that ex members now concern themselves with (Ritchie and John won't be coming back, let it go!)) and have nothing positive or productive to add.

Thanks Svante (the ref) Axbacke for clearing that up and setting it straight. I must admit again that I am once again surprised at how knit picky, arguemental and pinheaded some are here regarding the level of bickering that comes from a simple quote and offering. There are many threads here that go into subjects that I actually don't have any interest in, but to others it is very relevant. It is evident here that 'some' feel the site should pertain to subjects only what 'they' relate to, or find relative to their connection with the band and music (such as even who should be in the band).....sheeeeesh!!!!

Also MacGregor, I obviously made a name mistake with HUSH and Ballard. I am totally aware of the Joe South origination and for some reason when writing my jargon I had a slight brain fart and typed the wrong name in. No biggie but correction noted. Thanks. As for the MK1-MK2 issue, yes obviously due to history, MK1 had to come before MK2. Just as Roundabout came before MK1. Without either, neither would exist most likely. My point was that MK1 did 3 albums whereby all 3 used cover tunes throughout. Not just their first album which many artists do when breaking out, but all 3. Once MK2 came to be, they stopped doing covers and did only their material. The experiment was over....they became DEEP PURPLE. I guess the name 'Shades of Deep Purple’ was perfect for their first album name. MK2 wiped out any of those ‘shades’ and solidified the brand.

Cheers

You are two people who didn't manage to read that article correct. That doesn't stop us from linking to anything. The other mass of people who have clicked through here managed to take the article for what it was. Which, as Gert has pointed out, is that it is an article for the sound community. No one from the band or management has conspired to write something in that article to hype the band or the tour. Yes, the journalist probably had limited knowledge of the band (regarding how many founding members for example) but the intended audience for that article isn't hardcore DP fans, it is people in the audio industry.

We might think the world revolves around Deep Purple and that the rest of the world should know everything about the band and their family relations but for most of the inhabitants of this planet, there are other interests. And as a sound engineer myself, I read plenty of articles like this all the time about band I know nothing about or care very little about, but I'm still interested in their technical approach to a live show. Especially when the tour is different, like touring with an orchestra. It may seem "everyone" is doing that these days but the majority of live rock shows are not with an orchestra and incorporating an orchestra with a loud rock band, and in less than ideal venues, presents various problems that has to be solved. If you go through such a tour without any major problem, that might prove to be the most successful tour ever for a band, and that has nothing to do with monetary gains or how many people saw the band when another guitar player was in the band.

Funny.

But ....."bioluminescence"? What?

I suppose you are talking about masturbation.
I never got that far that I could not recover.

Certain other "gymnastical efforts" probably did hit me harder.

@38 -sure, why don't they provide him with all of the current technology and how to use it as well? So much for the already painstaking expense of producers as it is. I'm quite sure hardly anyone reading this really knows just what percentage they make. Bradford probably came rather cheap when you compare him to one of the most successful ever in Ezrin, however, this is going to be one big money investment either way.

It is only relevant to people that earn their living by doing sound at Live |Concerts. For them successfull means something totally different then to you guys. No English is not my first Language and it is not relevant who doesnt understand the article. Its is however relevant who does understand it!
And that is clearly not here. I shall remain silent as you guys can not accept that this Article was not for you.

Thanks for the clarification Nigel (that is if you are correct). I just seem to remember when the song was released and got plenty of airplay here in the States, it was mentioned (I also thought by Roger Glover himself somewhere) that his son was in the band. Either way, it was SOMEBODY related to Glover in some way, so I was in the ballpark with a foul ball.....

Gert, we were wondering what the most successful tour comment was about, musically it "would" be the most successful playing with an orchestra. But that cannot compare to a successful tour in a rock band format, musically, enjoying themselves or even financially! Two different entities indeed & I was curious as to the article's 'successful' comment! Maybe PP was also, it isn't a big deal!
But the next comment you stated is, in my book worth replying to!
[As the Orchestra and Soundequipment changed between those three Tours it was important to state that technically it was the most successful Tour.
The clue is that this was not a music magazine but a Technical Magazine for professionals of the industry.
So none of the stuff in that magazine was relevant to any of those people who read on this website.
If you ever went to a heavy Rock concert with an Orchestra you would understand that the past Orchestra Tour with Purple was technically of a very high Standard. That you don’t like it or don’t understand it does not make you a competent judge about matters discussed in the above Article].
The 'stuff' in the article can be relevant to people who read on this website, it depends on who those people are & what their understanding of the comments relate to!
As to the 'no liking or not understanding' comment, it is irrelevant making a comment like that. What, other people don't understand the article who are not involved in sound production etc? So therefore shouldn't be commenting about the article?

1 I went twice to see DP in The Royal Albert Hall in 1999.

2 I saw them with an orchestra in Rotterdam in 2000.

3. I did NOT say you are a tourprogramme. I said your texts RESEMBLED a hyped up tour programme.
I thought English was your own language. Not?

4 Are you implying that everyone here on board can bugger off when they are not a musician themselves?

5 If you d have taken notice over the years you d have known that the PERFECT STRANGERS tour was the biggest tour in the USA, after Bruce Springsteen.

Are you suggesting they topped those numbers with the short(...) and recent Orchestral Tour?

Cheers.

Tracey, The 'original 3 members; comment was a sting at the journalist who wrote that rave, as was a lot of the rest of my rant & getting basic fact correct before publishing isn't hard, maybe it should have said "3 original members of the classic MK11 lineup", or something similar! I though it could have also mentioned that Purple had played with orchestra's before etc, call me mr picky, but that article was sort of misleading in some ways. Not to worry, it isn't a big deal, I just felt like commenting on it.
Joe South wrote the song 'Hush' that Deep Purple covered. Interesting that after the original MK1 lineup, other incarnations have continued to play that song live over next the umpteen years! Purple sort of made it their own in some respects, or at least made it popular & it was a starting point to a great band.
Yes, the "original" DP MK 1 did a few covers indeed, too many in my book, (River Deep Mountain High) was a good version though, but a lot of artists over the years tend to start off in that sort of way! If they are paying tribute to the song with respect or simply cashing in (trying for instant recognition) is debatable. But in my book, the early Deep Purple sowed the seed in their original music they wrote, for so many ideas that followed when Gillan & Glover joined the band! Especially the guitar/organ riffing thing along with Paice's drumming style. Without MK1, MK11 would never had existed! Gillan & Glover were what Blackmore was looking for, harder songwriters (and a harder vocalist also) to beef it up a little. The recent orchestra tour was good in that it was different to just the band flogging the dead horse tour thing, but also as I said earlier, Purple's music, or some of it at least has always had the classical/orchestra thing to it! So it was due perhaps? Yes did the orchestra tour in 2001 & that was overdue also, some bands have the classical feel & some don't, I wish Tull had done it years back as well! Regards.

@Roberto, -since when does live appearance footage from the 70s matter if it's playback action or not? Who gives a shit? More importantly, no photos from that performance have even been seen.(although plenty of fans knew about this clip for years now)

@Nigel, -nefews, cousins, I thought it was all the same over there. :-)

It is so sad to observe members of our gentle posters whose biological electricity generating apparatus is not quite up to the task. Age and abuse of one's corpus can cause that I s'pose. Anyway, such a situation can lead to less than optimum functioning, possibly aggravated by excessive resistance in one's cranial circuits, that dims one's inherent bioluminesence.

But enough about me. I'm off to stick my point into an electrical outlet.

See ya'll later, ya'll.

@Chris, regarding:
Tracy Heyder says: "Great point and guess what…..Roger Glover’s son was a member of Kula Shaker"
CP says: "Re:5 When did Roger have a son?"
Alonza Bevan is not Roger's son. From memory, he's the son of a cousin of Roger's ex-wife.
And Ezrin hooked up with Kula Shaker a couple of years after Hush.

If it is true then it's good news.

Gotta be! Purpendicular was indeed a cracking album, one of their best, but you can't hope to recreate a vibe, however short or long ago it was. New vibes are always welcome, and hopefully Bob will be able to reproduce this.

@ 23, amazing footage of 1971 MkII... I don't know about you lot but I've never seen that before. Strange Kinda Woman...now thats a tune!! I wonder if this version of DP can come up with something as simple and timeless on the soon to be completed (Hopefully) album??? The problem as I see it is that all of the SM era albums are simply toooo busy. they are trying to be clever with the arrangements! Lots of brilliant musical passages does not necessarilly make a great piece! You have to have the basic ingredients first: Melody, structure and dynamism. Please take your time with the songs and lets hope you are all in a very productive frame of mind...I used to by DP albums completely on spec. I knew in my heart that there was always going to be something special on them. Not anymore after the last 2. I shall cautiosly listen to some samples before I buy (or download) the next one!

Purplepriest,
Just so you understand! This is not from a Tour programme. This was from a Magazine for Sound Engineers. The way you class a Tour as successful or not could also mean how consistent the results over a Six week Tour were. In that particular Magazine that was the reference.
It was also not the first Orchestra Tour. It was the third one to be precise. There was a US one, a european Summer one and the last one which went through the UK.
As the Orchestra and Soundequipment changed between those three Tours it was important to state that technically it was the most successful Tour.
That you don't like it or don't understand it does not make you a competent judge about matters discussed in the above Article.
But please feel free to discuss Loudspeaker and Soundmixing technology with me. I am here to help.

In the meantime this is slowly becoming one of my favourite albums.

The last tracks has a nice intro in which Steve plays something I wish Ritchie could have done for this band.
After he stops the song for a short while shows a chugging King Of Dreams tempo.
Am I delusional?!

Guess not!

Trace: enjoy the retirement & glad you're picking up the sticks again in a possible band situation. Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, used to be a mess after a three-four gig week(drinking didn't help, ha), until I got to it full time for a few years, and having to go to work in the mornings at six, huh, happy days :) Now it's only a few times per month, but last winter we did a five gig-'tour' in Lapland(in ski-resorts)with old mates on our winter-holidays playing mostly classic rock-covers...had a blast, got the families with us & enjoyed it thoroughly. (Thank you moderators for allowing this off-topic 'rant')

Purpendicular does an admirable job, and so did OTR(saw them live & enjoyed it for what it was: A Very Good Rainbow cover band/side project or whatever with some wonderful musicians doing great renditions of songs close to my heart!)

Long Live live music, support it people whenever you can.

Cheers & be well everyone

Enjoyed the whole bunch but hell, where is the rest of that SKOW clip?! : )

The irony of seeing self proclaimed feminist(he reacted kinda over the top at the time when he heard the so called sexist lyrics of All Night Long by Rainbow, thank you Rogerrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!)Joe Jackson.

Several other bands .....a joy to see.

Now going back to check out that Apolyctica with Nina Hagen clip : )

PP and MacGregor...

Sorry it is so hard for you to give credit for what is due to giving it all to what was. The band is doing well, and the orchestra being added was a nice touch and became a special time for the band. I saw it live. It worked. VERY WELL. Also, yes technically there is only 1 founding member left, but in my opinion, just like those whom say Purple ain't Purple without Blackmore, I say the same about Gillan and Glover. The 'Founding Members' did 3 albums. Their only hits came from 2 Cover songs. Russ Ballard's 'Hush' and Neil Diamond's 'Kentucky Woman'. It wasn't until Gillan and Glover came on board that the band finally 'wrote their own hits' and stopped being a 'cover's band. So in MY eyes, that's when Purple became Purple. MK1 was just a continuation of 'Roundabout' and should have maintained that title until MK2 came about. MK2 is where they finally evolved into the real Deep Purple with no more cover tunes, which was the model for all the MKs to follow. The Concerto should have been the 'introduction to DEEP PURPLE' and 'In Rock' should have been the first official Deep Purple studio album.

Cheers

Bob Ezrin could do DEEP PURPLE a lot of good. I am tired of all the negative banter. Give these guys a break, they are still one of the best bands in the world. I can speak for the company I keep when I say that Abandon, Baanas and Rapture of the Deep are brilliant pieces of driven innovation. (dictionary people) When they come on stage, the palms of my hands still sweat with eager anticipation. Just as they did in 1970. I am 60 on the 29th of April, and I go with my 15 year old grandson to the gigs. We are old farts that still appreciate DEEP PURPLE. Theres a new breed of fan now. YOUNGER. To quote a fantastic vocalist. "It's time the cattle went to the trough."

Considering even the production of the last Gillan's album "One eye to Morocco", Nick Blagona was in my top list producers....Anyway what really counts is the songwriting...that's the big question...and I don't think they are able to recreate the magic of "Purpendicular times"...

that is great news, hopefully the results will be positive. The "experiment "with Bradford as a producer didn't work out,I don't think he really understood or captured their sound, therefore ROFTD sound is a little bit flat and leaves me wanting for more.

Before people are wondering where I have been in the last 2 decades......

I know Portnoy already since I heard Metropolis Part 2.

It is just that the complete band often could not make me into a fan because I cant stand the sound of the singing. : (

Nowadays certain solutions come to my aid and so......
Listen to this : )

Ofcourse that piece of text would get up the noses of people, Tracy.

Hyped up texts, resembling that of the irrealistic and offending content of a tourprogramme sometimes.

I often reached the front of the stage and read the programme as soon as I could.

Often dissappointment because it was all bogus.

Often no respectful reference in those texts as well towards the former incarnations of the band that build the base on which the current line up was working.

That pissed me off, man I felt screwed at the beginning of the show!!!

Stick that lies in a place where the sun is not shining and give us a real beautiful programme with honour to those who deserve it.

Btw, this kinda experience does not happen all the time ofcourse.

It's all over the net and even listed at Wikipedia already as their next producer. But this isn't, I would try to be Mr. Anchorman and send it in for a Blog it will likely wind up in here anyway. But this is faster, either post it here guys, or headline it. RARE Deep Purple mkII footage starts this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18tQml773uQ

@ 18 : Excellent point Wildtrooper, hit the nail on the head. Ezrin has helped in songwriting with a song or two with some of the artists I am into, but I am not sure how much quality in the songwriting department he will add! Still, at least he is a positive to add to the ranks, whilst the fat lady warms up her tonsils & clears her throat!

PP@26...

See there? Right back where we started. "Here I Go Againnnnn.....". Look, 'Purpendicular' are a "Deep Purple Tribute Band". And from what I have seen on YouTube and read from those who have seen them 'Live', a damn good band. 'OTR' is a "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Tribute Band". And from what I have seen on YouTube and read from those who have seen them 'Live', a damn good band.

Nothing wrong with Tribute Bands. There is something wrong with Tribute Bands that claim to be something they are not. 'Demon's Eye' used to be a Tribute Band. Now they are a legitimate Original Band due to releasing an album (damn good I must say) with Original material. If 'Purpendicular' or 'OTR' ever release an album with Original Material, they too can join 'Demon's Eye', 'Deep Purple' and 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow' in the category of a 'Professional Original Band'.

Done and Cheers

"We" are over the RRHOF issue. It's just that it came up in a resent airing of "That Metal Show" featuring Alice Cooper whom brought it up, plus HIS Producer, Bob Ezrin is on board now with Purple. I'd say it ties in pretty well. There now, the dots are all connected for you.

Sami;

Sounds like a winner deal regarding your gig location. I was never that lucky. Always had to travel at least 45 minutes to the joints we played. I also never had the luxury of throwing down a few beers during. I couldn't handle drumming and singing while drinking. Hard on the voice and timing. Plus half the time I had to be at the Fire Station the next morning, just a couple of hours after the gig. Sure was fun though. Looking into starting up again. Retired now and don't have to worry about getting up in the mornings for work anymore, though I still am an early riser during hunting season and for fishing.....

Don't know what eluding means but it could have been 'the OTR-banter'
your referring to, Tracy...anyway, thanks for being honest. Hell, got a gig on saturday backing up a rock & roll-singer(quite a character, Screaming Lord Sutch leanings or so)at my local which is about 400 metres from my place...how convenient is that: cozy place, great people, don't have to drive, a few beers, crawling back home slightly drunk and pick up my drums on sunday.

Good!

Take care

I know : )

But what do I care?

Apart from still wanting his autograph.....

He really lost my respect when he pulled that NAZI trick way back when I watched him live in 1994 in Tilburg with Vandenberg.

Seeing him betray "photographerfans" in the audience to the security bu using that "I m looking into the crowd gesture" above his eyes.......

Next to that is my grieve he betrayed the Old Snakes.

Btw...
It finally sank in......

Why not try to remix the complete Deep Purple In Concert album?

Never had any trouble to be happy with the original but......
Maybe.......
An improvement as on Live In Japan is possible?

Hell, do something!
Give me something to get exited by on my old age.

"I realize it’s difficult for a long tenured band"

Maybe......
But with HIM they for sure hit the classic song button at least for a song or 3 an album.

Ofcourse, some dont like S & M or TBRO or HOBL, but IMHO you re a weird DP fan if you want to dismiss stuff like The Cut Runs Deep, Fire In The Basement.Anya, TBRO, Strangeways, Dead Or Alive, The Unwritten Law.....

Right now I m trying to push away the gloomy feel that has arisen now spring has been replaced by Autumn again.
So again I m listening to the wonderful FLYING COLORS album.
What a singer, drummer and songs.
Ofcourse it has parts I d have dismissed in A Purple piece.
But this ain't no Purple!!!!

And I m so glad.

Dutch climate is poverty for my health.
I hope to escape one day.......

I had better clarify that the band hasn't toured before with an orchestra, to my recent memory that is, but have performed with an orchestra in a live concert situation before this recent tour! Back to the last line or the second last line in that article....... According to the article, “The orchestra added a dimension to Deep Purple and their music that no one really dreamed existed,” he stated.
Strange comment that one, Purple's music or at least some of it, has always sounded orchestral to me & other fans I know. I suppose we all hear different things at different times.

Three founding members? Yeah right! One founding member would be correct. Seriously, Purple have done this years before, 1969 & again in 1999. They were one of the first to do it & many other artists have ventured into that realm as well, some memorable & some best forgotten!
With technology always improving, it should sound better (the mix between orchestra & band that is) & certain venues are great sounding theses days as well, so that also plays its part. The last line in this article could be taken in a number of ways & is one persons view on history. Successful in what way? Musically, financially, crowd attendances or simply enjoying themselves perhaps?

Good news indeed, but a great producer cannot make a mediocre song into a killer one. I'm hoping that the writing is at least 80% better than it has been since Perpendicular...Otherwise its pointless :(

"I think it's now confirmed" = not confirmed. I'm inclined to think getting a piece of news out is more important than anything, regardless of the outcome. Do they need a producer? I don't think so, now this one will easily be double the expense of the last one who got away with some easy money if you ask me. The last one was for garnish, this one will be more expensive, so let's hope an entire course is served up over it.

I'm just grateful that they're still around, and that they are capable of producing a new record:-) The two last records have been, IMO, poorly produced, but the songs have been "some good and some great". They're a different band because Blackmore left, then Lord, but that doesen't mean that they can't make great music. Considering what Blackmore's done since '97.....:-/

As I said, I'm just grateful that they're still around giving it their best at age (up to almost) 67. Deep Purple are still the soundtrack to my life, and I still love them with a passion. I hope the new album will show all of us that they're the best hard rock band ever, no matter the personell:-) And, have a look at all the backstage DVDs out there. They're a band who enjoys the fruit of their work, and they obviously enjoy eachothers company. They didn't do that back in '93, and there was no way the band could continue under such circumstanses.

Earlier I haven't been Morse biggest fan, but today I love his playing just as much as I used to love Blackmores. Blackmore didn't do anything for me during the '80s Purple except for the '93 tour, but by then it was to late.

I'm glad I'm able to enjoy all incarnations of Purple! Good luck with the new record guys:-)

Kevin Shirley was on my short list. But, I am happy. Things are moving on. Hopeful new blood will help get this one out to us, the starved fans...
